Taboo Mage - Chapter 28 - Spirit-Repelling Amulet
Chen Li had fallen into a deep nightmare and I didn’t even notice.
No time for self-blame, I quickly untied the red string that was tied around both of us and rummaged through the bag on the ground for a bottle. Inside was glutinous rice soaked in Rooster blood that I had prepared in advance.
I opened the bottle and threw the glutinous rice all over Chen Li.
Instantly, a burning sensation filled the entire room, and Chen Li screamed in agony.
Seizing the moment, I drew out the peachwood sword and struck Chen Li on the back. The sword felt like it had hit a magnet, sticking tightly to Chen Li’s body.
“Boss Chen! Boss Chen!” I shouted loudly as I continued to strike him.
Suddenly, Chen Li let out a bizarre scream as he rolled on the ground, then slowly opened his eyes. Seeing that he had woken up, I quickly placed the peachwood sword on the bed and helped him up.
“Boss Chen? Are you okay?”
Chen Li was drenched in cold sweat, clearly terrified by the nightmare. As he leaned on me, he couldn’t stop trembling.
I sighed softly, realizing I had underestimated the power of the nightmare. I thought it was just the spirit of a wronged soul. Who could’ve guessed that the spirit possessed such immense power?
Chen Li lay on the ground for a long time before fully waking up. I helped him back to bed to rest. Once he collected himself, I briefly inquired about the contents of the nightmare.
Chen Li told me that this time the dream was slightly different from the previous ones. In the earlier dreams, Chen Li kept repeating the process of the jumper falling, as if he were experiencing it himself.
But in today’s dream, Chen Li actually saw the nightmare’s face. As he plunged from the 38th floor, among the onlookers below was a man with a bluish-purple face.
He was staring at Chen Li, his bloodless face twisted into a slight smile.
Just as Chen Li was about to hit the ground, the Resentful Spirit extended its hands as if welcoming him to join their ranks of the dead.
When I finished listening to Chen Li’s description, his voice was unusually calm, yet I got goosebumps all over.
Suppressing the discomfort in my heart, I stood up immediately after listening to Chen Li’s story and indicated that I understood what it was and had found a solution.
Chen Li thanked me and then lay back down. I was amazed at his composure; at a time like this, he could still fall asleep. If it were me, I’d rather keep my eyes wide open until dawn than go through such a nightmare again.
The nanny, who had been waiting outside the door, showed me to the guest room. I slept soundly through the night and was informed the next morning that Chen Li had gone to the company before dawn.
The world of the wealthy is unimaginable. After accepting a free breakfast, I packed up my things and returned to my store.
As soon as I walked in the door, Manager Lin’s call came through. He directly berated me, saying I was incompetent and boastful, almost getting their Boss Chen killed.
I smirked, hung up the phone immediately, looked at the half-prepared life amulet in my hand, and threw it straight into the trash can, then blocked Manager Lin’s number.
If the tiger doesn’t show its might, do they really take me as a pushover?
Early the next morning, I was woken up by knocking on the door even before I opened my eyes. Groggy, I went to open the door and saw Chen Li, face ashen, standing at the doorway, with Manager Lin behind him, smiling broadly.
“Apologize now!” Chen Li’s face was stern, and his imposing presence formed an invisible barrier of authority.
Manager Lin bowed deeply, “I’m sorry, Mr. Gu!”
I rubbed my messy bedhead and propped my right hand on the doorframe, “What? I haven’t fully woken up, didn’t hear you.”
“I’m sorry!” Manager Lin took a step back and shouted while bending over.
I yawned and stepped aside to let them in.
I admit that I did it on purpose. This kind of sycophant who acts before the master even speaks-he needs a lesson to remember he’s not that important.
But for a boss of Chen Li’s caliber to drop everything and come personally to apologize certainly stroked my ego substantially. Even if it just took a phone call, I would have run over eagerly.
This time, Manager Lin had learned his lesson. From the moment he walked in, he sat quietly on the sofa without saying a word. Chen Li exchanged a few simple pleasantries with me before inquiring about the progress of the life amulet.
I led him to the Inner Room and took out the already carved spirit-repelling amulet. Chen Li held the small wooden amulet in his hand, turning it over and examining it for a while before finally looking at me with doubt.
“Just this little wooden amulet can solve my problem?”
I knew he would be skeptical, so I took the spirit-repelling amulet back and explained, “This is just the outer form. What’s most important is the spirit inside. Of course, I haven’t put the spirit inside yet.”
With that, I placed the spirit-repelling amulet in front of my father’s ancestral tablet, then lit some yellow talisman paper. I threw the ashes into a mixture of black dog blood and glutinous rice mixed with Child’s Urine.
Once the incense burned halfway, I retrieved a soul-capturing bottle I had prepared earlier and placed it next to the life amulet. With my fingers in a mudra, I quickly chanted an incantation and then shouted, “Enter!”
The glass bottle shook violently. When I removed the lid, a distinctly visible red light spot shot out and flew straight into the life amulet.
Next, I soaked the amulet in the mixed liquid for half an hour before tying a red string around it.
Only after all of this did I hand the now-completed spirit-repelling amulet to Chen Li.
“The thing just now…”
Chen Li didn’t ask further, quickly putting the amulet around his neck. However, Manager Lin, who couldn’t hold back his curiosity, hesitated but then asked me what it was.
I briefly explained. Based on Chen Li’s description of the nightmare last night, I could confirm that the entity haunting Chen Li was a Resentful Spirit. Its purpose was to invade Chen Li’s dreams and destroy his consciousness.
Such Resentful Spirits are what people commonly refer to as ghosts, specialized in scaring people.
To deal with them isn’t complicated. You can use the most common exorcism methods, which often include black dog blood and glutinous rice.
As for the spirit inside the soul-capturing bottle, it was the spirit of a black dog I had caught in the wild when I had nothing better to do. Unexpectedly, it turned out to be perfect for resisting the Resentful Spirit’s intrusion.
Manager Lin looked bewildered but praised me a few times, then sat down quietly.
Rubbing my hands together, I told Chen Li that if anything else came up, he could come back and find me. After all, the life amulet I made comes with after-sales service.
