Taboo Mage - Chapter 138 - The Little Fox Speaks
There’s a saying that water from close shores shouldn’t be wasted on outsiders, but I’ve never heard of someone bending the rules to harm their fellow Chinese.
After all, we share the same roots, so why the rush to harm one another…
The mask was exceedingly eerie, and I couldn’t see the expression on his face. Facing such a ghastly visage made my heart tremble.
“Mr. Gu, don’t you think it would be more comfortable to take out what’s in your pants?” the masked man said, making me realize that the copper coin sword was still hidden in my trousers. It did feel a bit uncomfortable upon mentioning it.
At this point, I wasn’t embarrassed to be seen-through; after all, we are all Chinese, and given his abilities, it’s not surprising he’d see through me.
I stood up and swiftly drew the copper coin sword from my pants. “Indeed, Gu Family is the top yin-yang life amulet master family in China; it truly is a divine artifact.”
Taka reached out, his fingers almost touching the copper coin sword. I recited an incantation, my finger subtly pointing at the copper coin sword under the table. The sword vibrated and jolted Taka’s hand away.
“It seems this copper coin sword recognizes its owner.”
“Gu Family’s items should, of course, only be touched by members of the Gu Family.”
I didn’t want to dwell on such trivial matters. My main purpose today was to find Chi Rui and Jue Chi. I went straight to the point and asked him where the two were.
Taka was straightforward, saying, “The two are guests at my home, but for the time being, they might not be able to leave with Mr. Gu.”
“What are your demands? Just state them.”
What reason does a man have to imprison two other men in his home if not for some unspeakable condition, unless Taka actually likes men? He doesn’t seem the type.
Taka chuckled a few times, “No demands, just need Mr. Gu to do me a favor.”
“A favor?” I frowned. “What do you want me to do?”
“Has Mr. Gu ever heard of Mr. Mu An from Bangkok?”
“No, I haven’t.”
“Ha, Mr. Mu An is the leader of a very powerful organization in Bangkok. He’s encountered some trouble recently and would like Mr. Gu’s assistance.”
I fixed my gaze on him, sneering, “You can place spirits inside a Buddha amulet, yet you can’t handle him?”
Taka shook his head, “That’s exactly why I need Mr. Gu’s help. Mr. Mu An wants a Buddha amulet for protection, but he refuses to use an evil spirit, which puts me in a difficult position.”
I understood-his skills were simply not up to their standards.
Realizing something, I looked up sharply and asked, “So, this trip to Thailand was actually a setup by you? Du Jun was involved too?”
“To be honest, Du Jun did have a problem with his Buddha amulet. When he came to me, I merely made a deal with him. He brought Mr. Gu from China to Bangkok, and in return, I exorcised the Resentful Spirit from his Buddha amulet.”
He was straightforward! But this made me grind my teeth in frustration.
So it was all a damn scam from the beginning! I can’t believe I was kind enough to help that Du Jun, only to find out he was so deceitful!
“So, what do you say, Mr. Gu? Do you need time to consider?”
Taka placed his hands on the small wooden table, seemingly waiting for my response.
I hesitated. We were on Taka’s turf, and his backing seemed to be the organized crime syndicate led by Mu An.
With Chi Rui and Jue Chi in their hands, I couldn’t abandon them. But I had vowed by my mother’s grave that I would never again use the Gu Family’s life amulet skills to harm others.
I was torn between the two and couldn’t decide.
Finally, Taka gave me a week to consider. Grasping the copper coin sword, I stood up and walked out in a daze.
Outside, the moonlight suddenly grew brighter. The Woman in red had vanished, and the impoverished celebrating masses continued their joyful revelry, dancing around a bonfire in thirty-degree weather.
I retraced my steps, and as I neared the hotel, a white figure suddenly dashed in front of me.
I thought I was seeing things, so I continued walking inside. Suddenly, a woman’s voice whispered in my ear.
“Mr. Gu… Gu…”
The voice seemed familiar, and I paused for a moment. On instinct, I glanced at the life amulet hanging around my neck, then anxiously looked around.
Sure enough, behind a pile of wood at the corner of the hotel entrance, I found the little fox that had gone missing with Jue Chi.
It was curled up weakly, its entire body covered in blood.
I hurriedly picked up the little fox. As soon as it nestled in my arms, it closed its eyes. I fished a rune out of my pocket and stuck it onto its body.
The little fox had lost a lot of blood. Without prompt treatment, its life might be in danger. But in such a desolate place, where could I find a veterinarian?
With no other choice, I carried the little fox back to the room. As soon as I pushed open the hotel door, I saw Du Jun and Liao Qing sitting on the sofa, waiting.
Seeing Du Jun made my temper flare, but I had more important matters at hand.
Fortunately, I had hidden the little fox under my clothes beforehand. Looking exhausted, I told the two of them that I was too tired to talk about anything today.
Du Jun and Liao Qing courteously understood and, after a few comforting words, went to the room next door.
As soon as the room door closed, I let the little fox out. It was still unconscious, its eyes tightly shut. I touched its fur, which felt sticky with blood.
I first rummaged through Jue Chi’s bag and found a large package of pet medicine. Then, with the medicine box and the little fox in tow, I headed into the bathroom.
I dipped the little fox’s paws into warm water, and it sighed comfortably in my arms, surprisingly content to let me bathe it.
After the bath, I realized that the little fox’s bloodstains weren’t from its own wounds-the only injury it had was a small cut on its leg.
As I bandaged its wound, I wondered who had been so severely hurt.
Could it be Jue Chi? That’s right! The only person who could have been near the little fox at the time was Jue Chi!
The more I thought about it, the more anxious I became. I shook the little fox’s ears, asking it where Jue Chi was being held.
The little fox let out a few squeals, but I couldn’t understand a single word.
