Chapter 37
Chapter 37
Xia Wanzhi: [A thief broke into my house.]
Waking up at eight-thirty in the morning, Xia Wanzhi fell into deep thought as she looked at the extra water glass and cotton swabs on her bedside table.
Beyond that, a pile of luggage she hadn’t had time to move back from the Zhou Family home had somehow appeared in the storage room.
Zhuzi had left last night after dropping her off from the hospital. She had taken her medicine, washed up, and gone straight to bed, sleeping until dawn.
She had no idea what had happened in the interim.
But she just knew someone had been inside.
She asked Zhuzi, who said she hadn’t come over.
She asked Xie Tan, who said she didn’t know.
How could Xie Tan say she didn’t know?
Xie Tan was the person most likely to know the passcode and open the door!
Early that morning, Yun Li had been forcibly taken to the hospital by Jiang Baichuan to have her dressing changed. Upon seeing Xia Wanzhi’s message, she subconsciously blurted out, “A thief broke into Wanzi’s house!”
Jiang Baichuan, who had just found a parking spot and brought the car to a steady halt, asked in surprise, “A thief?”
Yun Li was on high alert. “That’s what she said.”
“The security at Lanting Bieyuan is top-notch. With double access control, how could a thief possibly get in? Besides, that house-” Jiang Baichuan blurted out without thinking, only stopping himself just in time when he realized something was wrong.
“How do you know she lives in Lanting Bieyuan?” Yun Li caught it instantly. “What about the house? Keep talking.”
Jiang Baichuan covered it up nonchalantly, continuing with a calm face, “Xie Qiyan bought that house for Xie Tan. It’s only normal that I’d know.”
Yun Li clearly didn’t believe him. “Is that so?”
For the first time, Jiang Baichuan didn’t dare look Yun Li in the eye. After entering the hospital, he quickened his pace. “Let’s go, get your dressing changed first. Did you get it wet last night?”
Yun Li was busy replying to Xia Wanzhi’s text and only looked up at him after a moment. “What did you just say?”
Jiang Baichuan patiently repeated, “The wound. Did it get wet last night?”
“No, it hurts like hell, so I didn’t dare touch it.” The moment Yun Li looked up at him, she quickly lowered her eyelashes again.
What kind of CEO is this persistent?
And his last name is Jiang, to boot.
The alpha among overbearing CEOs!
He clearly knows she isn’t single, yet he’s still so enthusiastic toward her.
Yun Li’s internal state was extremely conflicted.
If it weren’t for the fact that this head wound was his fault, and that he insisted on taking responsibility-claiming he would live with guilt and self-reproach for the rest of his life if she didn’t let him see this through-she wouldn’t have agreed.
She couldn’t fend him off, so she had to say yes.
Otherwise, she never would have let him accompany her to change the dressing.
If Liang Jing found out, neither of their families would have any peace.
Thinking of something, Yun Li stole a glance at him.
This big CEO of the Jiang Corporation really has a way with moral kidnapping.
He looks all refined and proper, but surely he isn’t going to pull that ‘forced possession’ trope, is he?
“You just said it was impossible for a thief to get in. Wanzi asked Xie Tan, and Xie Tan said she didn’t go over last night. So who exactly went in?” Yun Li emphasized the question again.
Jiang Baichuan kept his mouth shut and didn’t answer.
Yun Li huffed. “Could it be the King of Hell?”
Jiang Baichuan: “…”
“If you won’t say, then don’t. I’ve already guessed it.” After sitting down, Yun Li waited quietly for the nurse to change her dressing. She didn’t flinch once during the entire process, while Jiang Baichuan, watching from the side, was incredibly nervous.
Only after the dressing was changed and new gauze was applied did Jiang Baichuan remember the question he hadn’t followed up on. “You guessed it? Guessed what?”
A slight smile curled on Yun Li’s lips. “Xie Qiyan.”
“Heh-” Jiang Baichuan smiled but said nothing.
Yun Li also rarely pushed the matter further.
She was a smart woman.
She was gentle, beautiful, and interesting. With every interaction, Jiang Baichuan could discover more of her hidden virtues.
Just like now, with a hint of playfulness hidden beneath her serious demeanor.
On the other side, Xie Qiyan, having received a message from Jiang Baichuan, walked out of the conference room with a dark expression. He called Xie Tan directly to interrogate her: “You told Xia Wanzhi you didn’t go over last night?”
Xie Tan was the picture of innocence. “Didn’t you say that we couldn’t tell anyone about us sneaking into Sister Wanzi’s house last night?”
After finishing her sentence, she emphasized, “That includes Sister Wanzi.”
Xie Qiyan: “…”
Pinching the bridge of his nose, Xie Qiyan gave an order: “Tell her again. Say you went to see her by yourself last night.”
Xie Tan was incredibly reluctant. “…”
Reluctant as she was, she did as she was told. After all, she really didn’t want to do ten more sets of practice exams.
The sun came out in the afternoon. Xia Wanzhi stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling window, basking in the warm light. She had probably sweated it out last night, as her fever had broken today, and she felt much better than yesterday.
There were dozens of unread messages from Zhou Yu on her phone. She clicked in and read through them with a heart that remained entirely unmoved.
Now that things had reached this point, she was miserable enough as it was. She no longer had the energy to worry about saving face for others.
What happened, happened.
Xia Wanzhi had no intention of swallowing any more grievances.
After deleting him, Xia Wanzhi was about to turn off her screen when a WeChat message from Mr. Butler popped up.
Xie Qiyan: [Open the door in ten minutes. Installing a water dispenser.]
Xia Wanzhi was puzzled, but ten minutes later, right on the dot, the doorbell rang.
“Um…” She wanted to ask why he was suddenly sending a water dispenser, but remembering the man was mute, she paused to rephrase her words. “Thank you for your hard work.”
He was the butler of this apartment complex, after all. It was normal for him to provide whatever the unit was lacking.
Thinking this, Xia Wanzhi decided to make the most of his services and spoke up briskly, “Could you also help me get a tea set, a robot vacuum, a blender, and… a projector? That’s all for now.”
After she finished, the other party didn’t respond. She felt a bit awkward. “Is there… a problem?”
After a long pause, the man nodded, then shook his head.
Xia Wanzhi: “…”
He left as soon as the water dispenser was installed. Xia Wanzhi didn’t have time to ask what he actually meant.
Once outside the door, Qi Shi gave his report just like last time, including the requests Xia Wanzhi had made.
A second later, Xie Qiyan replied: [Yu Fei will deliver them in an hour. You carry them up to her.]
It didn’t even take an hour. Yu Fei arrived with the items in just forty minutes.
Xia Wanzhi’s doorbell rang again. After seeing who it was through the video intercom, she opened the door in shock and watched as Mr. Butler carried in the items she needed one by one.
Xia Wanzhi couldn’t help but share the news with Yun Li: [When I make enough money, I’m definitely buying a house in Lanting Bieyuan. The private butlers here are too efficient.]
Yun Li: “…”
Is this a matter of the butler?
This is a matter of the Big Shot backing you.
After resting for two days, Xia Wanzhi regained some color in her face and looked much more energetic than before. By evening, Xie Tan sent a message saying that Old Master Xie had invited her to the Xie Family home for dinner.
This time, it really was the Old Master’s own words.
Ever since he had tested the waters to see if Xia Wanzhi was going abroad, the Old Master had grown increasingly melancholy. He feared that if she actually left the country, they might never see each other again, which was why he kept wanting to invite her over for a meal.
The Old Master had always hoped she would marry into the Xie Family. Unfortunately, she had fallen for Zhou Yu. While Zhou Yu was also his grandson, and the Old Master had thought it would be a good match, the world was a fickle place. The engagement had barely even begun before it fell apart.
The moment she went downstairs and saw Xie Qiyan, Xia Wanzhi froze in place for a long time.
He was leaning slightly against the hood of the car, one hand in his pocket, while the other held a lit, expensive cigar. As their eyes met, Xie Qiyan exhaled a plume of swirling smoke.
Plenty of people smoked, but on Xie Qiyan, it somehow exuded the ultimate sexy vibe of a refined rogue.
Good-looking people really did look good doing anything.
Xia Wanzhi suddenly remembered when they were children. Even when he was forced to kneel in the Xie Family courtyard as punishment, looking completely disheveled, it couldn’t hide his beauty.
Some people, it seemed, were just born beautiful.
