Chapter 4
Xu Qingye became my bodyguard when I was nineteen.
What was the point of having him?
Well, he could find the hidden cameras my stepfather secretly installed in my room.
He could stop my drunken stepfather from trying to throw himself onto my bed in the middle of the night.
He could also pull me behind him when my half-sister tried to slap me.
After my dad died, my mom remarried a very wealthy man.
He was so rich that people bowed and scraped whenever they saw him.
But, his character left much to be desired.
Xu Qingye probably pitied me. Even when I couldn’t afford to pay his salary, he still stayed by my side for two years.
At nineteen, I was pretty naive, always trying to test the sincerity in our employer-employee relationship.
After all, there really aren’t many people who would save me from disaster time and again.
So I wanted more-more security.
I often called Xu Qingye at three or four in the morning.
When he picked up, he’d grit his teeth and ask, “What kind of trouble are you in now?”
He’d also answer coldly when I insisted he call me ‘sister’: “I’m a bodyguard, not a male model.”
Most of the time, I’d wear a little camisole and pretend to be a bold, mature woman in front of him.
He’d bite his cigarette and say carelessly, “What are you shaking for? At least act the part.”
The last time, I was half-drunk, eyes red, knocking on his door and throwing myself at him.
He grabbed my reckless hands and said coldly, “Damn it, behave yourself.”
After that night, even my friends tried to talk sense into me: “Wanwan, why are you wasting your time on a block of wood?”
Fine, I kept hitting a wall, over and over again.
I started to accept reality and decided to fire him.
I called him, again in the middle of the night.
After a long silence, a sweet female voice came from his end: “Qingye, who’s calling?”
He replied, “My employer.”
Just the employer.
My voice caught, and I sniffed. “Xu Qingye, I don’t need you anymore.”
On the other end, only silence answered me.
“I’ll settle your salary in six months.”
“Lin Tingwan…”
He finally spoke, but I didn’t want to hear it. I hung up.
I turned off my phone and hid somewhere for half a month.
When I returned to school, my friend told me in a serious tone.
Xu Qingye had come looking for me many times.
In the end, he left a message.
I asked indifferently, “What did he say?”
My friend stared at me and repeated his words:
“Wanwan, are you really trying to ruin me?”
