- Chapter 150 - A Special New Year Gift
As New Year’s Day approached, the festive atmosphere grew more intense, with the joy of the upcoming celebration permeating everywhere, even the air seemed to carry a faint sweetness.
Having been in the hospital for twenty days, Xia Zhennan increasingly disliked the smell of disinfectant. After finishing breakfast, he finally decided to share his thoughts with his wife: “Wife, I want to go home!”
“But your leg isn’t healed yet!” Zhan Niantong could see his mood, but going home was such a big decision that she dared not be careless. Although her dear husband’s left leg was recovering quickly, having regained four to five percent of its function after half a month of physical therapy, at this rate, two months would be enough for him to walk independently.
Xia Zhennan didn’t plan to stop coming to the hospital after going home; he just wanted to stay at home at night: “In my current condition, I don’t need to stay in the hospital. We can come every morning, do physical therapy, and then go home. It won’t delay the treatment.”
Hearing this, she was tempted: “Then let’s ask the doctor first! If the doctor says it’s okay, we’ll go home.”
“I’ll talk to the doctor myself today.” He didn’t want to spend New Year’s in the hospital; it was such a bad omen!
“Alright, today I happen to have a make-up class for Friday. I only have one class in the afternoon, so if we can go home, I’ll have time to move things out.”
The decision was happily made.
The first thing Xia Zhennan did upon arriving at the Physical Therapy Department was to discuss this matter with his attending physician, Mr. Fang.
“Physical therapy has just entered the second phase, why are you in such a hurry to be discharged?” Mr. Fang was surprised by his decision, and his expression clearly showed disapproval of his discharge.
“It’s not really a discharge, just staying at my own home. I’ll still come for physical therapy during the day. After all, the hospital beds are in high demand, and my leg isn’t a big issue. It’s not good to occupy a bed unnecessarily.” Xia Zhennan replied humorously, showing his good mood by joking with outsiders, as he was confident the hospital would agree to let him go home.
Mr. Fang was amused by his humorous analogy. Though not entirely appropriate, it carried sufficient reason, and Mr. Fang couldn’t find a reason to refute, so he nodded: “Alright, just be careful at home and come for physical therapy during the day.”
This reminder was somewhat redundant, as there was someone at home more professional and cautious than a nurse watching over him. He wouldn’t have a chance to be careless even if he wanted to!
His good mood continued. Yesterday afternoon, he had discarded his crutches and practiced walking alone, managing to walk several meters without issue. Today, he planned to walk twenty or thirty meters; in the new year, he didn’t want to rely on those cold crutches anymore.
After the second class, Zhan Niantong received a call from her dear husband. Since he called, it must be to share good news. She smiled, not needing to ask, as her dear husband would proactively ‘report’: “Wife, you’ll have to move things this afternoon.”
Oh yes! It was indeed good news. Zhan Niantong was so happy that her eyes blossomed like radiant lotus flowers: “It’s not tiring at all; I’ll just be happy.” Whether moving early or late, it had to be done, and she was naturally delighted to move early!
Her happiness was something he had anticipated, and his mood was further uplifted by her joy. As he was about to hang up, he suddenly added: “Wife, New Year’s is coming, and I have prepared a very special gift for you!”
Upon hearing about the gift, Zhan Niantong wouldn’t let him hang up, eagerly asking: “What gift? Tell me!”
“I can’t say now; it wouldn’t be a surprise if I did. You’ll have to wait until tonight for the gift.” Xia Zhennan smiled mysteriously.
“You’re so annoying, being all mysterious.” But he was right; since it was a New Year’s gift, it should be given during the New Year for more significance. Now she was caught in a happy anticipation, how wonderful!
However, while secretly enjoying, she suddenly wailed loudly in her heart. Oh no, her dear husband had prepared a New Year’s gift for her, but she had forgotten to prepare one for him. What should she do? With less than fourteen hours until New Year’s, what gift should she prepare for him?
Buying something casually would lack sincerity, and making something herself was too rushed with such limited time. She couldn’t think of a good idea or make anything, so she anxiously paced around.
This made Miss Qiao, who was nearby, dizzy from her pacing. Unable to resist, she pulled her over to sit beside her: “Weren’t you very happy just now? What are you worrying about now? Your face is all scrunched up like a ball of cotton.”
Seeing Miss Qiao, Zhan Niantong seemed to see hope. Her mind was always full of clever ideas, one after another. She was certain Xiaoqiao would have a good one too. She pulled her over, and the two girls pressed their heads together on the table, whispering, “Xiaoqiao, tomorrow is New Year’s Day. What are you planning to give Xing Chengyi as a gift?”
Miss Qiao’s smile was as warm as a spring breeze. She tossed her beautiful chin confidently and patted her chest. “I myself am the best gift!”
“Uh…” That answer was invincible–it left Zhan Niantong stunned, her cheeks quietly reddening. “You mean…” You’re going to give yourself to him?
When did this girl become so bold?
Gong Xiaoqiao was completely immersed in the joy of getting to go out with her beloved tomorrow and didn’t notice her friend’s reaction, much less the impure thoughts swirling in her head. She just kept giggling, “He’s got a three-day holiday for New Year’s too. We’ve agreed to go to Luoxia Town together, hee hee… Isn’t that the best gift?”
Oh! So that’s what she meant! Whew, her mind had just wandered off in all the wrong directions. Was it because she was married now that her thoughts were starting to become less pure? “I guess so!”
Let’s not dwell on whether my head is pure or not. Right now, it’s better to focus on the gift issue.
He still has trouble with his leg and needs physical therapy, so going out to play is definitely out of the question.
Sigh, it’s such a dilemma!
Her friend fell silent, and Miss Qiao returned from her own happiness. Seeing her friend’s conflicted expression and thinking back to their earlier conversation, she immediately guessed what was going on. With a mischievous smile, she nudged her dazed friend with her elbow. “Hey, are you stressing about what to give your old man?”
Old man, old man–why did that sound a little… incestuous? Zhan Niantong was displeased. “Gong Xiaoqiao!”
Gong Xiaoqiao covered her mouth and giggled, quickly correcting herself, “Alright, alright, your husband, okay?”
Zhan Niantong didn’t bother to argue about the name. Her face fell, and she revealed her worries, sounding a bit dispirited. “Mm, it’s so frustrating. He said he has a gift for me, but I haven’t prepared anything. I don’t know what to give him!”
“Silly, that’s not even a question!” Miss Qiao blurted out quickly.
“?” Zhan Niantong was puzzled.
“You! Just wrap yourself up and give yourself to him, I guarantee he’ll be so surprised he’ll wish every day was New Year’s.” This girl really was unmatched in saying whatever came to mind!
Zhan Niantong’s face instantly turned red. “Gong Xiaoqiao, what are you saying!”
“You’ve been married to him for so long, why are you still so shy?” Gong Xiaoqiao was the straightforward, carefree young lady she’d always been. Even on topics that made others blush, she was totally uninhibited. “I’m just telling the truth! All men love this kind of thing–don’t tell me your husband doesn’t.” Ahem, the more she said, the more outrageous it sounded!
Hearing this, Zhan Niantong’s gossip-loving side was suddenly awakened. She grinned mischievously, leaning in to whisper in Xiaoqiao’s ear, “You sound so experienced… Don’t tell me… you’re not, you know, a virgin anymore!”
“Of course not! I’m still totally innocent…” Miss Qiao was, after all, still a pure, untouched girl. At that, her cheeks turned as red as apples, her head bowed, hands twisting together. Seeing that, Zhan Niantong believed her one hundred percent–she was definitely telling the truth!
Her appearance made Zhan Niantong cheerful. This little minx had teased her earlier; now it was her turn! With a wicked gleam, she teased, “Hey, how could you be so hopeless? After dating for so long, you still haven’t…”
Ahem, Zhan Niantong, don’t you doubt yourself. You’re still very pure–otherwise, you wouldn’t be so tongue-tied about this sort of thing!
Teased like that, Miss Qiao only bowed her head lower, practically burying her face in her chest, obediently not refuting a word. That really wasn’t like her! You had to marvel again at the power of love–it really was something else!
The summer’s end drew near. After a long while, she finally murmured a report of her own accord, “He said, he said… he wants to wait until I’m really sure before we… you know, that. He’s afraid I’ll regret it in the future…”
No wonder he was the younger brother of her dear husband. All good people, all reliable, worthy of lifelong trust! Otherwise, in front of the woman he loved, what man could resist temptation? Only a man who truly loved and cherished her could do that!
Her mischievousness flared up. “Xiaoqiao, you should just go for it!”
“We were talking about you just now–how did it get turned back to me?” Don’t doubt it, Gong Xiaoqiao was still that feisty young lady; in an instant, she was stamping her foot in frustration, all the queenly style intact. “Stop overthinking it. Take the initiative tonight, go buy a sexy piece of lingerie, and give your husband an unforgettable New Year’s Eve!”
Just thinking about that sexy lingerie made her nervous! Besides, her husband’s leg wasn’t well right now, so nothing too intense would do!
So, Zhan Niantong quietly deleted those words from her mind.
Just like that, she really did have a gift! And a very special one, too–she was sure her dear husband would love it!
