Chapter 2
Everyone in Jing City knows that Vice Minister Pei loves his wife as much as his own life and fears her like a tiger.
He swore never to take a concubine, and no matter who tried to persuade him, it was useless.
That year, when the emperor saw that Pei Huai had been without an heir for a long time, he bestowed several beautiful concubines upon him. When I heard the news, I was both angry and aggrieved, but since the emperor’s gifts could not be refused, I had the servants prepare the rooms.
But by noon, he came back alone.
He had taken fifteen strokes on his back.
It turned out he had refused the gifts, and the emperor, annoyed, had him beaten.
I was so distressed that I burst into tears, but he smiled at me as if asking for a reward.
“Niaoniao, I only need you.”
His smile was so beautiful, as if his eyes were filled with stars.
In that moment, all I could hear was the wild beating of my heart.
After he was promoted to Vice Minister, his official duties became extremely busy, yet he would still bring me my favorite pear blossom cakes when he returned home, draw my eyebrows for me in the morning, worry that I would be bored in the mansion, and disregard his status to personally make a swing for me. Fearing I might catch a chill from playing too much, he repeatedly instructed the servants to add more clothes for me.
One thing after another, all telling me again and again-
He loves me deeply.
How could it possibly be false?
I murmured to myself, “System, tell me, does he really love me or not?”
The system did not respond. Ever since I refused to leave the world, it had fallen into dormancy.
But I think, even if it were awake, it probably couldn’t analyze the complexity of human emotions.
