My Merman Husband Won't Admit He Loves Me - Chapter 6
I was genuinely furious. Was admitting he liked me really that difficult?
Even the commenters couldn’t take it anymore.
[Keep being stubborn, male lead. You’re about to lose your wife!]
[Being proud is one thing. Not knowing when to stop is another.]
[All that stubbornness, and then he’ll complain when his wife’s gone.]
Exactly. Maybe losing his wife would finally straighten him out. Who else would want to marry him after this?
Practically steaming with anger, I showered and went to bed.
When I woke again, it was the middle of the night. The breathing beside me was quiet, but it still startled me.
In the still darkness, a man sat on the edge of the bed with his back to me. His tall silhouette looked like a mass of indistinct black fog.
At my gasp, he turned. His blue eyes were startlingly bright in the dark.
“What are you doing?”
I tried to sit up and discovered something cold around my wrists and ankles. Chains rattled as I moved.
The light came on. I squinted, then finally saw what was on me.
Gold cuffs encircled my wrists and ankles, with gold chains running to the bed’s four corners.
He’d chained me up!
“Shen Qingyan, what are you doing? Take these off!”
I shouted, but he didn’t move to release me. Instead, he leaned over and touched my cheek.
His fingers were cold. I shrank back a little. He paused, then lowered his head and kissed my cheek again and again.
“No. If I let you go, you’ll run away again.”
His voice was muffled, obsessive.
I’d never realized he had such a disturbed side.
“Where would I even go? Let me go!”
He didn’t answer immediately, but finally unlocked the cuffs.
“I’m afraid you’ll run away again.”
He held me tighter, as though he wanted to pull me into his very body.
Something cool touched my neck. His tears.
“You said you liked me. You lied! Now you’re throwing me away just because our compatibility is only ninety percent!”
“You’re a horrible woman! You stole my heart and made me fall for you, and now you’re abandoning me! I’ll never let you get away with this!”
My hands stopped pushing at him. Amid his tearful accusations, I’d caught the important part.
“What did you say? Say it again.”
“You’re a horrible woman!”
“Not that. The next part.”
“You’re abandoning me!”
“Not that either. Before that.”
“…”
Shen Qingyan’s ears turned red. He kept burying his face in my neck.
I pushed him back firmly, rolled over, and straddled him, leaning down to his ear.
“Don’t deny it. I heard you. You said you liked me.”
I grinned in triumph. Beneath me, he was flushed scarlet. Finally, he gritted his teeth and gave up trying to save face.
“Yes! I like you! So what? I’ve liked you for so long, and now you’re abandoning me! You even want a divorce! I’ll never forgive you. Never!”
He shouted through his tears, looking at me as though I were a scumbag who’d zipped up and walked away.
Feeling playful, I kissed the corner of his mouth, then held him back when he tried to follow. My tone was deliberately flippant.
“I didn’t mean to abandon you. But what can I do? I met that lion, and he really is my type…”
“Jiang He!”
He cut me off. Anger blazed in his eyes.
After a long moment, he seemed to concede defeat. His body went slack, and he fell back onto the soft quilt, covering his eyes in anguish.
His voice was dry and hoarse.
“If you really like him…”
He paused, as though making the most momentous decision of his life.
“Fine. But I have to be the official husband!”
What?
I froze.
I knew exactly how possessive Shen Qingyan was. Never in my wildest dreams had I imagined him saying that.
When I didn’t respond, his expression grew worse.
“What? I’m already letting him join us, and you’re still not satisfied? What more do you want? Don’t tell me you want him to be the main one! Jiang He, don’t push your luck!”
His brows knotted, as though he’d suffered an intolerable insult.
I still said nothing. He clenched his teeth so hard they looked ready to crack.
“Then… then I’ll be the side piece, all right? I’ll be the side piece!”
He sounded utterly defeated.
I felt as though I’d just heard a voice from another planet.
Was that even Chinese anymore?
The comments were losing their minds.
[A stranger becomes the side piece: shameless. A friend does it: don’t get caught. I do it: a love for the ages. He’s beyond saving.]
[What is this beautiful merman with no self-esteem and nothing but love in his brain?]
[Where do I pick up a merman like this? Urgent. Please and thank you.]
…
My face turned red from holding back laughter. Shen Qingyan, however, took it for excitement.
“Hah. Got what you wanted? Do you really like him that much? Mm—”
I bent down and kissed that endlessly complaining mouth.
