My Merman Husband Won't Admit He Loves Me - Chapter 5
Once I was outside, a triumphant smile spread across my face.
We were meeting at a restaurant. The lion was already there when I arrived.
His name was Meng Zhou. The moment he saw me, he beamed, showing a row of white teeth. He reminded me of a puppy wagging its tail.
The comments appeared.
[Nobody told me the lion was this handsome! He’s the sunny, sweet type!]
[If I’d met someone like that at school, I could’ve chased him for three years straight.]
[Our girl has the proud, aloof male lead on one side and Mr. Sunshine on the other. How is she supposed to choose?]
[Choosing is for children. Adults take both. A mere two dicks… Sorry, three.]
A mere three…
I nearly spat out my water.
Those commenters really had no limits.
Since this was our first meeting, I was a little reserved. Meng Zhou, on the other hand, was warm and friendly. We were chatting in no time.
“When I heard you’d found a one-hundred-percent match, I was pretty surprised. That’s incredibly rare. I thought you were so lucky. I never imagined…”
He trailed off, but I understood.
He’d never imagined it was a system error.
“So what are you planning to do now? By the way, I’m still single.”
He rested his chin on his hand and gave me a playful wink.
I set down my coffee and smiled at him.
“I’m not planning to get divorced.”
“You’re serious?”
“Of course. Five percentage points make no difference to me. Unless Shen Qingyan asks me for a divorce himself, I’m not getting one.”
Besides, I was waiting for the day he confessed his love.
“Well, that’s a shame.”
The young man opposite me stirred his coffee, murmuring about his disappointment. There wasn’t a trace of it in his eyes. If anything, he seemed a little relieved.
Apparently, he wasn’t a fan of the bureau’s matching system.
We didn’t talk for long. Once we’d said everything we needed to, I went home.
Shen Qingyan was still sitting in the living room. It was overcast, but he hadn’t switched on the lights, and every curtain was drawn. The room was dim.
At the sound of the door, he stared straight at me. I couldn’t read his eyes.
A freshly printed copy of our new compatibility report lay in front of him.
Who knew how long he’d been staring at it?
“I thought you weren’t coming back.”
His eyes glistened as he watched me approach. Then he looked down at the report again.
“A match made in heaven. It was all a lie…”
“Liar…”
He closed his eyes in pain, his voice bitter. He looked like a lost little animal.
For a moment, I didn’t know how to comfort him.
“Ninety percent is actually pretty high.”
It was true. For plenty of people, a final score in the eighties was already excellent. Ninety was hardly low.
But my words seemed to set him off. His eyes reddened, and tears spilled down his cheeks.
“No. No, it isn’t. It isn’t high at all. I didn’t even reach ninety-five…”
He shook his head desperately, both hands trembling. With every choked word, he seemed to be building a prison around himself.
“It matters that much to you? Why?”
I turned toward him. He went still, then raised his head to look at me.
Those soft lips moved.
I waited. The hope in my eyes gradually faded.
In the end, he couldn’t give me an answer.
I knew it.
“Hah…”
My temples throbbed with anger. I stood and went upstairs without looking back.
