Chapter 3
As the store clerk led me inside, the restaurant was playing a melodious cello piece.
Because I was in such a disheveled state, nearly everyone’s gaze was fixed on me.
“Jiangjiang, why are you here?”
Lin Xingyue, looking as usual, warmly linked her arm with mine.
“I was just telling Senior Zhou that today is Children’s Day, and he should wrap up the celebration early to go home and spend the holiday with you.”
I looked at her, “Celebration?”
“Yes, the company finally signed a big deal today, and we were supposed to celebrate together. But everyone else had to go home for the holiday, so it was just me and Senior Zhou left.”
“What’s there to celebrate about Children’s Day?”
Zhou Xuan slightly furrowed his brows and let out a mocking laugh, “Don’t think Jiangjiang is as childish as you.”
Although Lin Xingyue was interning at his company, she wasn’t afraid of him at all and just rolled her eyes:
“Yes, yes, I’m childish, and you’re the most mature.”
A very familiar banter.
Not aggressive, but rather like playful teasing.
I blinked away the water droplets on my eyelashes, my gaze fixed firmly on Zhou Xuan’s face, “The ring.”
“Why did you give her a ring?”
He was silent for a moment and said, “Children’s Day, just a toy for a little girl.”
I looked at Lin Xingyue again.
Just in time to catch a fleeting smile in her eyes.
Cold, with a hint of mockery and malice.
But when I looked again, it had reverted to her usual insincere enthusiasm:
“Oh, this isn’t a real diamond ring, just a fake, just a toy.”
“A few days ago, I confessed to a guy I had a crush on, but he rejected me. I was very upset, and Senior Zhou bought it to comfort me-right?”
In Zhou Xuan’s usually calm and indifferent eyes, there seemed to be a flicker of some emotion.
In the end, he still nodded, “Yes.”
Between them, there was clearly an undercurrent, as if they were jointly hiding a huge secret.
And I didn’t know.
I stood there with pale lips, clutching my skirt and rubbing it over and over, unable to suppress the sourness welling up in my eyes.
“…Is that so?”
“Of course it is. I’m leaving now.”
Lin Xingyue tossed the diamond ring into her bag, walked a few steps, then suddenly seemed to remember something and turned back to smile at me,
“Jiangjiang, happy holiday.”
