Chapter 13
Zhou Xuan left his company affairs behind and rushed to the hospital whenever he had a moment.
But on the morning of my surgery, he didn’t show up.
It wasn’t until the anesthesia wore off that he finally arrived, breathless at the door of the ward. “I’m sorry, Jiangjiang, I’m late…”
However, I quickly saw Lin Xingyue’s update on Moments.
She was lying on a messy hotel bed, smiling provocatively at the camera.
I knew it was meant for me to see.
That night, the moon was bright, and the stars were sparse.
I lay in the hospital room, the smell of disinfectant in the air, unable to fall asleep.
Every time I closed my eyes, the eighteen-year-old Zhou Xuan appeared before me.
He wore a clean white shirt, standing under the wisteria.
His hands were behind his back, nervously holding a bouquet of beautiful white roses.
He looked at me in the summer breeze, his youthful eyes filled with undisguised affection.
“Jiangjiang, the college entrance exams are over, let’s date.”
“I’ll go to the same city, the same university with you.”
“For the decades to come, we will never be apart again.”
Back then, we were still young, and Zhou Xuan’s eyes shone like they held all the stars in the world.
I took the roses, nodding vigorously, leaning in to kiss him.
Eighteen-year-old Zhou Xuan was still inexperienced, and in his nervousness, he bit my lip.
The blush spread from his ears to his cheeks, and he looked at me, whispering, “Jiangjiang, I’ll practice more.”
But when I opened my eyes, it was all just a fleeting dream.
Zhou Xuan stood before me, his expression filled with defeat. “Jiangjiang, forgive me this once.”
I pushed him aside without a word and got out of bed.
Outside, the day was bright, and the doctor called me to the consultation room.
Zhou Xuan tried to follow, but a nurse stopped him at the door. “What is your relationship to the patient?”
“Family.”
I turned sharply. “He is not.”
Zhou Xuan’s fingers froze in mid-air, trembling slightly.
All these years we walked together, without any concrete proof, couldn’t attest that he was the most important person in my life now.
I cast him a cold glance and turned to enter the consultation room.
The door closed behind me.
The doctor in front of me wore a grave expression:
“Li Jiangjiang, your pathology results are out.”
