Chapter 9
Since that day, Shi Chuan seemed to have kept his promise and drew a clear line with Wen He.
It felt like we had returned to how things were before.
The collaboration between Jiang You and our company continued, so I still saw him quite often.
One day after work, I received another message from him:
-“I’m sorry.”
-“But I still want to say.”
-“Don’t be fooled by Shi Chuan, things can’t just be ignored.”
-“Infidelity is simply a matter of yes or no.”
I lowered my eyes and replied:
-“Got it.”
-“Thank you.”
Of course, I knew that infidelity is either zero times or countless times.
But what I wanted, I hadn’t obtained yet.
A few days later, while at work, I started feeling unwell.
I have always had poor health, and that day I estimated it was a mix of low blood sugar and a cold.
I felt dizzy and sluggish.
In the afternoon, I went to the hospital to register.
The hospital was noisy and bustling.
I held the slip and searched for the place the doctor mentioned.
The corridors in the building were intricate and winding; as I turned and turned, I got a bit lost.
Just as I was about to find a nurse to ask for directions, I suddenly froze.
Through the throngs of people coming and going, I spotted Shi Chuan immediately.
He was supporting someone, his lips slightly curled up, his side profile gentle.
The person beside him was Wen He.
She also had her eyes slightly lowered, one hand slowly stroking her still flat belly.
The two of them supporting each other looked like an ordinary, happy couple in the world.
My head ached as if it was about to split open.
Yet I stood there, staring blankly at them.
Wen He seemed to sense something.
She looked up, and our eyes met.
I knew she saw me.
But this time, she didn’t flee.
She just looked at me, raising a smile of victory.
With trembling hands, I reached for my phone.
Dialed that number.
Shi Chuan paused for a moment, then took out his phone to answer:
“What’s wrong? Zhaozhao.”
“Shi, Shi Chuan.” My voice was hoarse from the illness.
The person on the other end immediately sounded anxious: “Zhaozhao? Where are you now?”
The light before my eyes blurred due to the pain.
I wanted to laugh but lacked the strength to pull my lips apart.
“Turn around.”
I said, “Shi Chuan, turn around.”
Before the darkness stripped away all my senses.
All I could see was Shi Chuan rushing towards me, his face filled with pain and helplessness.
