Chapter 15
The day He Zhou was discharged from the hospital.
I was stopped in the small garden downstairs.
Fu Jun was still sitting in his wheelchair, his expression somewhat cold. “Jingjing, I’ve let you go for long enough. It’s time to come home.”
I frowned. “We’re already divorced.”
“I never signed the divorce papers.”
He put on that detestable mask of feigned gentleness again.
“There’s a business banquet tonight. As my wife, you need to accompany me. Everyone’s been saying they’d like to meet my wife.”
“Why don’t you take Xu Wanning with you?”
Fu Jun softened his tone. “I know you’ve always been jealous about Ah Ning. But now, her gallery’s business no longer needs my help, and she’s promised she won’t make things difficult for you anymore.”
I didn’t want to argue with him, so I turned to leave.
“Zhou Jing, even if I treated you as Ah Ning’s substitute at first, what about you? Didn’t you treat me as He Zhou’s substitute?”
I abruptly turned my head.
In the blood-red glow of the setting sun, his expression seemed to carry a trace of vulnerability.
I took a deep breath. “Fu Jun.”
“Can you stop flattering yourself?”
“What makes you think you’re even worthy of being his substitute?”
After saying this, I suddenly noticed Fu Jun staring coldly at something behind me.
So I turned around-
And saw He Zhou.
He had changed out of his hospital gown and into a sharply tailored suit. The festering, unhealed wounds were all hidden away.
His face was pale, his lips faintly colored, and his brows and eyes carried a sharp, lethal intensity.
Though thin, he looked like a blade unsheathed.
The warm light of the sunset stopped at his side, completely severed from the sharp and chilling aura he exuded.
And compared to Fu Jun, who always carried himself with arrogant self-importance, they seemed like people from two entirely different worlds.
I wasn’t wrong.
Fu Jun was never worthy of being compared to him.
“Mr. Fu.”
He Zhou walked over, took my hand, and looked down at Fu Jun in the wheelchair.
“I may not be as wealthy or powerful as you, but I do know a couple of lawyers.”
“If you won’t sign the divorce papers, we’ll go through the litigation process.”
“A marriage without sincerity should’ve ended long ago.”
It was as if Fu Jun had completely forgotten that he was the one who had approached me and proposed marriage in the first place.
Back then, his tone was gentle, but his gaze was cold and disdainful.
“You do look a lot like Ah Ning, but you’ll never be her equal.”
“As long as you don’t have delusions of grandeur, I’ll pay you more money than you could ever earn in a lifetime.”
Now, the one with delusions of grandeur had become him.
Fu Jun stared intently at He Zhou, sneering.
“And what can you give her? You’re just a lowly policeman. I’m here to take her to a business banquet, to introduce her to connections.”
Before his words had fully landed.
He Zhou pulled out a gilded invitation and handed it to me, half-narrowing his eyes as he looked at Fu Jun. “What, just a banquet.”
“Is it really that special?”
