Chapter 1
The news of Xu Wanning’s divorce reached the country that day.
I was accompanying Fu Jun for a follow-up examination at the hospital.
His permanently damaged hearing could not be restored, and his legs still couldn’t walk.
But when he heard that the culprit behind all this had returned to the country,
his usually indifferent eyes revealed a flicker of joy.
That night, he got drunk.
With hazy, drunken eyes, he held my hand and murmured softly:
“Ah Ning, now that you’re back this time, don’t leave me again.”
I obediently replied, “Alright, I won’t leave you.”
But then he looked at me, his expression gradually fading: “You’re not Ah Ning.”
I froze mid-motion.
Fu Jun had already picked up the small blanket draped over his wheelchair and threw it at my face:
“Just because you have the same face as Ah Ning, you think you can become her?”
“How could you ever compare, Jingjing?”
“If there’s nothing else, just get out.”
His tone remained calm and unhurried.
The blanket didn’t hit me hard, but it felt like a slap across my face.
A strong sense of humiliation swept over me in an instant,
dragging me back to many years ago.
When I was eighteen, the night before my art entrance exam.
It was Fu Jun’s white moonlight, Xu Wanning, who tore up all my paintings.
She used a small gemstone-encrusted silver hammer to slowly, piece by piece, break my fingers.
Even after they healed, the moment I picked up a paintbrush, my hands would uncontrollably tremble.
I could never paint again.
Fu Jun, as Xu Wanning’s protector, came to find me.
He pushed a check in front of me: “If it’s not enough, name your price.”
Holding my trembling hand, I fought back the urge to curse him out:
“What good is your money to me? My dreams, my future-they’ve all been destroyed by her!”
And then, Fu Jun, sitting across from me, laughed.
He looked at me with an expression that was both gentle and contemptuous:
“Take it. Isn’t what you people call a dream just a way to ask for more money?”
At that time, he was aloof and proud. Only twenty-three years old, he was already the youngest leader of the Fu Family.
He looked down on me-completely and utterly.
Back then, neither of us, nor anyone else in the Fu Family, could have imagined-
That two years later, Fu Jun and I would be married.
