Chapter 14
After that, I started my visa application and wrapped up my work at the tutoring agency.
Cheng Yedu’s cousin still had two prepaid sessions left. I told him that after those were done, I wouldn’t be renewing his contract.
He asked hesitantly, “Teacher Lin, are you okay?”
Cheng Yedu and Ji Tangli were together now.
They were very public about it, a stark contrast to how private he had been when we were dating.
If he had dumped me a year ago, I would have been heartbroken.
But now, it was fine. I had no expectations of him, and I had already enjoyed what I wanted from the relationship.
I told his cousin, “I’m fine, don’t worry about me.”
…
But a couple of days later, Cheng Yedu showed up at my workplace during business hours.
He tapped his fingers on the edge of my desk, his expression arrogant.
“Using this tactic to force me to come see you… Aren’t you a little childish?”
“What tactic?”
“Canceling my cousin’s classes.”
“I’m not canceling them, I’m just not renewing the contract once it’s up. All paid sessions will be completed.”
“What, you’ll only renew if I’m dating you?”
“It has nothing to do with you. It’s about my personal plans.”
“Still playing tough,” he sneered, a confident smirk on his lips. The director of the agency thought I was being harassed by a parent and knocked on the door.
“Sorry to interrupt,” she said to him, “but Teacher Lin is resigning next month. We have several other excellent physics tutors, and we’d be happy to offer your child a free trial lesson with one of them.”
“You’re resigning?” Cheng Yedu asked me. “What are you going to do then?”
The director realized we knew each other and quietly backed out of the room.
I couldn’t help but laugh. “So concerned about me, are we, ex-boyfriend?”
His face went cold again. I mimicked his earlier tone, “You’ll only renew if I’m dating you, tsk tsk.”
He shrugged, feigning indifference, and turned to leave.
…
Cheng Yedu waited until that evening to text his cousin.
“Did she tell you about her future plans?”
Cousin: “Who are you talking about?”
“You didn’t go to the agency to see Teacher Lin, did you???”
“I’m fine with her not renewing my contract. You were a jerk to her, so it’s normal if she doesn’t want to teach me anymore. Don’t use me as an excuse to harass her! I don’t want her to think I’m some kind of mama’s boy who can’t communicate directly and sends his brother to do his dirty work!”
