Listen to Dad

We’d been together for eight years. We had agreed that his whole family would come to my house on the second day of the Lunar New Year to discuss our wedding date, but they stood me up.

When I went over to demand an explanation, I found him bringing a female colleague home for the holidays instead.

He told me not to overthink it and to stop acting crazy.

His parents chimed in, “Tu Ke, you need to show some restraint. Look at yourself.”

My father had been up since dawn, busying himself in the kitchen to prepare a massive feast. He told everyone he ran into that his future in-laws were coming over later that day.

But then Chu Ang just said he forgot and suggested we do it another day.

While he was studying abroad, his father suffered from kidney failure. I was the one who spent every moment accompanying him to the hospital.

My own father’s health wasn’t great back then either, but he was afraid of adding to my burden. He went to the hospital for surgery all by himself and kept it a secret from me.

In that moment, I snapped. I started kicking his front door like a madwoman.

“I came here specifically to go crazy today! Restraint my ass! Chu Ang, to hell with you and your whole family!”
