Chapter 20
I walked out of the archives like a zombie.
Each step was blurry, as if treading on an uncertain void.
Aimlessly, I wandered, unknowingly arriving at an empty stairwell.
My stiff body had almost lost sensation, and I sat down weakly on the stairs.
My mind was in chaos, like ashes scattered after a fierce fire, impossible to piece back together.
I didn’t know who I was, nor where I was.
All my understanding was torn apart at that moment, everything felt like an absurd dream.
In my memory, I clearly had the image of my uncle’s face, but why did the section for children say “none”?
The date on the archive was also after my birth.
I thought of countless reasons to explain why they didn’t list any children.
Yet, I still fell into endless doubt.
Am I really their daughter?
Who are my parents?
Who am I?
Before I could gather my thoughts, a rough hand suddenly reached from behind, and a towel with a pungent smell swiftly covered my mouth and nose.
My eyes finally closed, drawing all my thoughts into endless darkness.
