Chapter 4
The warmth around me faded away in just a few seconds.
Even though the heater was on full blast, making me sweat in my down jacket.
Yet, I felt so cold.
A chill that seeped from my bones.
All the confusion was now completely clear.
The relentless “why” finally had an answer.
I reached out to touch my cheek, feeling the wetness on my hand.
It turned out that, unknowingly, my face was already covered in tears.
“Miss, are you looking for someone?”
“Why are you crying?”
A gentle inquiry suddenly came from beside me.
A well-dressed lady stood next to me, looking at me with concern.
The moment our eyes met, she exclaimed in surprise:
“Are you? Chloe Miller?”
At the same time, the conversation in the private room came to an abrupt halt.
In less than a minute, the door was hastily opened.
Julian Montgomery’s face appeared before me.
His eyes showed clear panic:
“Julian?”
“Why are you…”
His gaze fell on Mrs. Montgomery standing behind me.
Julian Montgomery’s panicked expression suddenly froze.
Instinctively, he reached out to grab my hand, but stopped midway.
After a few seconds of hesitation, he withdrew his hand into a loose fist and let it fall.
His voice was deep and heavy: “Did you come looking for Chloe Miller?”
“No, purely by coincidence.”
Mrs. Montgomery shook her head and smiled gently:
“I did know about Chloe Miller.”
“After all, with my son out there gaining experience, I couldn’t help but check and be concerned.”
“I was quite pleased to see you had a proper relationship over the past three years.”
“I thought you were waiting for me and your father to give you a way out.”
“It turns out, you can’t even give yourself a way out.”
Bitterness filled my heart.
I looked up at the unfamiliar yet familiar Julian Montgomery.
I forced a smile:
“Young master really didn’t need to stage a cold war to force a breakup.”
“Though I’m a greedy poor person, I still have some self-awareness.”
“As long as the money is right, I promise to disappear without a trace.”
