Chapter 25
My mother and I left the prison cell and paused for a moment in the guards’ resting area.
The guards had already been knocked unconscious.
My father’s soldiers had been dismissed and sent away by him, each fleeing for their lives.
As for my father, he sat in a chair, muttering nervously over and over.
I hadn’t seen him for more than a year-he was much tanner and noticeably thinner, which made him look even stranger.
“It’s over, it’s over, this time we’re definitely done for.”
“I broke into the prison, I broke into the prison!”
“Not only did I lose the battle, but I also led my men around causing chaos. I even cut down the guards, and then…” His gaze landed on my mother and me.
Suddenly, his voice took on a sobbing tone. “This time, the whole family is really going to die together!”
He let out a sudden, piercing wail, making his raspy voice sound even worse.
I couldn’t help myself and called out, “Dad, you…”
He suddenly looked at me and pointed at my mother. “Your mother has no conscience. I know it-she never really considered the Cheng Family her own family.”
“No matter if I came home or not, took concubines, or kept having sons, she never cared.”
“She’s always looked down on me for being a rough man. She just looks down on me…”
I wanted to comfort him, to tell him not to be upset. It’s not that my mother looks down on you-she looks down on everyone equally.
But he started wailing again. “But I just can’t let go! Wuwuwu.”
My mother was a bit helpless. “Why are you saying all this nonsense in front of the child?”
“I’m not talking nonsense! Can you say it isn’t true?”
My mother fell silent and didn’t reply.
“Uh, Dad, why don’t we go somewhere else for now?”
“You silly girl, do you think there’s anywhere left to go? It’s just a matter of dying sooner or later.”
I glanced at the flickering torchlight outside the window, feeling a bit puzzled.
“Dad, all this commotion-was it all you?”
“Ah, no. Actually, when I entered the city tonight, I realized it was already in chaos. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have…”
My father suddenly fell silent, and my mother grabbed my hand again.
Someone else had entered the prison.
