Chapter 3
Bi Heng couldn’t believe that the long-haired woman who had terrified him the entire way was actually a person-and a very ordinary, poor one at that.
Jiang Long couldn’t believe it either, because this long-haired woman had scared him to the point of fainting twice, nearly making him lose control of his bladder. If she was just a poor person… how could he ever face himself again? How could he hold his head high from now on? Did he have no shame?
Besides, could the earlier “Ghost Wall” have been fake?
Bi Heng and Jiang Long exchanged a dazed glance. At this moment, the two who had never been on the same wavelength strangely found a bizarre sense of mutual understanding and wisely kept their mouths shut.
The most terrifying long-haired woman turned out to be human, while the six who seemed the most normal were anything but…
Forget it. The top priority now was to get back to the car and leave this place as quickly as possible.
As the three of them walked away, the two car owners who had been arguing earlier were now so worked up that they were about to come to blows. Fortunately, a woman was there to mediate, holding her man back and urging him to calm down. Amid her shouts and the cries of a child, the scene felt eerily horrifying.
Thinking about how they had just actively spoken to ghosts and even offered to help, they couldn’t help but shudder.
Jiang Long and Bi Heng didn’t dare to look back and quickened their pace, soon overtaking the long-haired woman.
The noise behind them continued.
One voice said, “Enough, enough! I’m tired of arguing with you. Let’s have those two young men over there settle this and see whose fault it really is!”
Another voice chimed in, “You think I want to argue with you? Fine, let them settle it! Hey! You two, stop walking and come over here. Tell us whose fault this is-mine or his!”
The crying woman who had been trying to mediate, as if seeing a lifeline, ran toward Jiang Long and Bi Heng. She grabbed Bi Heng, who was about to bolt, and pleaded through tears, “Please, help me calm them down. I can’t stop them from arguing. I’m scared. Please, help me.”
They were about five or six meters apart, and Bi Heng could hear the woman’s voice clearly, even though it should have been some distance behind him-especially since he and Jiang Long had sped up significantly after hearing the two men’s conversation, almost wishing they could teleport far away from this cursed place. Yet, in an instant, the woman was behind him, gripping his arm.
Even through the thick layers of clothing, Bi Heng could feel the icy chill of her hand.
“Please help me, okay? Just help me talk to them, alright?” The woman’s expression was earnest, her pale face streaked with dried blood. Even her hair was matted with blood, frozen into stiff clumps that seemed to cling to her head.
Jiang Long: “…”
Bi Heng: “…”
Could he say no?
Bi Heng tried to shake off the woman’s grip on his arm, but he noticed her hand was covered in blood, and her strength was astonishing. His own strength felt insignificant in comparison, like a mayfly trying to move a tree. Besides, the two men behind her were watching with eager anticipation, waiting for them to come over and settle the dispute.
He swallowed hard. “I have an urgent matter at home and need to get back. I can’t help you. You’ll have to work this out yourselves.”
Jiang Long, his legs like jelly, chimed in, “Yeah, this is a private matter. Outsiders like us shouldn’t get involved. You should really call the police. Only what the police say counts. Our opinions don’t matter…”
How could they dare to help? The two car owners weren’t even human, and they were arguing so fiercely, each refusing to admit fault or back down. No matter who they sided with, the other party would surely disagree, and if a fight broke out, wouldn’t it be innocent bystanders like them who’d suffer?
But as soon as Jiang Long finished speaking, the woman pleaded urgently, “Just for a moment, really. It won’t take much of your time.” With that, she began pulling Bi Heng back toward the scene. Her grip was so strong it felt like his arm might snap, and Bi Heng was practically dragged along for a couple of steps. If he hadn’t noticed how unnaturally fast she was, he would’ve pushed her away and bolted without a second thought. But with her speed, could he even outrun her? Not to mention, he couldn’t match her strength either.
He shot a desperate look at Jiang Long. Why is she grabbing me and not you?
Jiang Long: “…” Good luck, buddy.
Bi Heng: “…” This traitor.
Bi Heng was filled with despair, but the woman seemed delighted as she called out to her husband, “Honey, honey, I’ve brought someone back to help us settle this… Ah!” Her smile faltered as she suddenly felt a sharp pain on the back of her hand. It hurt so much that her entire body went numb, and she instinctively yanked her hand back. She looked up in shock to see that she’d been struck-by the long-haired woman?!
Bi Heng seized the moment and immediately broke free from the woman’s grip, retreating behind the long-haired woman with his large frame trembling. Jiang Long, quick on his feet, also ducked behind Bi Heng, shrinking into himself like a quail. He tugged at Bi Heng’s clothes, but Bi Heng ignored him. Jiang Long whispered in his ear, urging him to look at the roadside. There, a woman crouched on the ground, cradling her crying son. Her down jacket had slipped to the ground, revealing the bloodstains on the child’s body and the gaping wound in his belly…
The woman, who had been crouching by the roadside with her head down, suddenly looked up. Her face was a mess of blood and flesh, with one eyeball dangling from her cheek…
Injured like that and still moving-there was no way she was human.
Bi Heng shuddered and averted his eyes.
The woman who had been slapped looked pale and inexplicably frightened. She said unhappily, “Why did you hit me?”
Her husband, seeing his wife being struck, widened his eyes and walked over with a menacing expression, ready to demand justice for her.
Bi Heng and Jiang Long exchanged a glance, sensing trouble. They began thinking of ways to escape.
The situation was getting worse by the minute.
The long-haired woman’s face was even paler and stiffer than the other woman’s. Her long hair floated around her as she stared with dark, empty eyes. “We’re in a hurry to get home and don’t want to help. Besides, the nice man is right-you should go find the police to settle this. Even if we did, the police wouldn’t decide based on our opinion. Isn’t this just a waste of time?”
The woman: “…”
The two approaching men: “…”
That did make some sense.
The long-haired woman cracked a friendly smile. “Why don’t you stop arguing and wait by the roadside for the police to handle it? How does that sound?”
She stiffly took two steps forward, her legs straight as if they couldn’t bend. Bi Heng and Jiang Long could only see her swaying back, step by step, crunching through the snow, her long, straight black hair swaying with her movements…
The two men, who had been storming over, paused in their tracks, shivering in unison. A flicker of fear appeared in their eyes, especially in the woman who had been slapped. She found the long-haired woman eerie and terrifying, almost ghostlike. She glanced at the long-haired woman furtively and, seeing that she wasn’t looking her way, darted to her husband’s side, hiding behind him and watching warily.
The long-haired woman repeated, “How does that sound?”
The long-haired woman’s voice drifted through the cold wind, sending an involuntary shiver down their spines. Yet, her tone sounded eerily sincere-a sincerity that felt even more terrifying in the midst of this bizarre atmosphere.
Her face was pale and stiff, her smile awkward and unnatural, as if she had just crawled out of a grave and wasn’t quite used to being human.
The woman and her husband both gasped in fear and quickly said, “Alright, alright, you can go. We’ll wait for the police.”
The other man swallowed hard and nodded. “Got it, got it. We’ll wait for the police. You’d better leave now!”
Bi Heng: “…”
Jiang Long: “…”
It was clear that the long-haired woman looked far scarier than the blood-covered ghosts nearby!
So, it wasn’t their fault for mistaking her for a ghost-she was even more ghostly than an actual ghost.
When the long-haired woman heard them agree so readily, she seemed pleased. She turned her head stiffly and smiled at Bi Heng and Jiang Long. “See? They’re quite reasonable. A little communication, and they agreed. Now, let’s get back in the car and hurry home.”
Bi Heng felt dazed, unsure of what to say. He could only stare at the long-haired woman with a mix of awe and unease. “…Okay.”
Jiang Long wiped away a tear, realizing that being scarier than a ghost had its uses sometimes.
…
The group watched as the long-haired woman walked stiffly back to the car. Before leaving, she turned her head to look at them again, her arm stretching out to wave goodbye. From a distance, they couldn’t see her expression clearly, but it sent an inexplicable chill down their spines.
“Those two guys are probably doomed.”
“Yeah, they’ve definitely been coerced by that creepy woman.”
“No wonder they didn’t want to help us…”
“We should mention it to the police when they arrive. Hopefully, there’s still time to save them.”
“…”
Bi Heng and Jiang Long, who had scrambled into the car as quickly as possible, naturally couldn’t hear what the ghosts were saying. If they had, they wouldn’t have known whether to laugh or cry.
Jiang Long fumbled with his seatbelt, muttering under his breath as he urged Bi Heng to drive faster and get them out of this nightmare. The events of tonight were enough to fuel his bragging for a lifetime.
Bi Heng started the car, careful not to look too closely at the ghosts standing in front of them. It was only now that they noticed something unusual-despite the fact that these people were still standing and talking, the car’s headlights revealed no shadows beneath them. If they hadn’t been so terrified and on edge because of the long-haired woman, they might have noticed sooner.
Of course, they had misunderstood the long-haired woman. The truth was, she had saved their lives.
Bi Heng glanced in the rearview mirror. The long-haired woman’s instincts were sharp; she looked back at him the moment he turned his gaze. Then, with a wide grin that revealed two rows of gleaming white teeth, she gave him a smile that was both satisfied and unsettling, her voice filled with genuine warmth. “Hehe, it’s so warm in here!”
Bi Heng: “…”
