Chapter 15
It was the first time Gu Feiyin had seen Neighbor Miss so agitated. She jumped three chi, crashing through two ceilings, leaving a gaping hole in her head with blood flowing even more vigorously!
Gu Feiyin was stunned. Was she really that excited?
She knew borrowing such a thing would be difficult, but she hadn’t expected Neighbor Miss’s reaction to be so intense, creating two large holes. She could have just said no; Gu Feiyin was reasonable and wouldn’t force it. There was no need for such a dramatic response…
“Alright, alright, no need to lend it. Calm down!” The place she lived in was already drafty from all directions, and if the ceiling started leaking too, life would become unbearable.
After finally calming the excited Neighbor Miss, Gu Feiyin breathed a sigh of relief. However, her desire for a coffin remained undiminished. No matter how she thought about it, a coffin was the ultimate tool for keeping out wind, rain, and snow!
Since she couldn’t borrow Neighbor Miss’s, she decided to try her luck with the Old Lady. But just as she had this thought, the sound of sweeping, fast and urgent, reached her ears, sounding just as excited as Neighbor Miss had been.
Gu Feiyin: …
It seemed borrowing from this person would be just as difficult.
Oh well, she’d have to think of another way.
Since she couldn’t afford to buy one or borrow one, she’d have to make it herself. Making a coffin wasn’t that complicated. The mountains were full of trees; she could chop down a few big ones, cut them into pieces, and nail them together. It wasn’t technically challenging. Plus, making it herself meant she could make it more spacious. Fold some quilts inside, and it would be soft and warm. Just the thought of it made her happy.
The more she thought about it, the more feasible it seemed. Gu Feiyin quickly went to find Neighbor Miss and the Old Lady, inviting them to go up the mountain with her that night to chop down a couple of trees to make a coffin. She couldn’t go during the day because of work.
“By the way, you don’t have anything planned for tonight, do you?”
The two ghosts stared at her silently, as if they were looking at some kind of oddity.
“Great, no plans then.” Gu Feiyin grinned. “If you haven’t digested what you ate last time, this is a good chance to walk it off. Come find me when I’m about to get off work. I won’t be coming back; we’ll head straight to the mountains.”
Neighbor Miss & Old Lady: …
So, the plan was set.
Gu Feiyin went downstairs to wash up in the restroom. On her way to work, she passed a bun shop and bought two beef buns, eating them as she walked. The buns from this place were delicious, with thin skin and lots of filling. The skin was especially chewy, and with each bite, hot steam and aroma wafted out, along with rich, thick juices…
She felt like she could eat ten in one go! But the buns were expensive, at one and a half each, so two were already a treat, enough to fill her up to about six, seven, eight, or nine-tenths full.
Recently, the haunted house’s performance had skyrocketed. The most obvious change was the increasing number of people coming to lift her coffin lid. Each time they opened it, they screamed, and some even cried. At first, she was anxious, wondering if their intense reactions meant she wasn’t doing a good job. But her boss said she was doing great and should keep it up.
After all, it was a haunted house. Screaming and crying were normal; if people were laughing, that would be unusual.
She immediately understood: here, the louder the screams and the more intense the cries, the better the performance. Clearly, it would be hard for other employees to surpass her.
Gu Feiyin was quite proud. As an exemplary employee, she would set a good example.
The Red-Dressed Ghost couldn’t bear to watch. Ever since this straight-haired girl entered the haunted house, she’d been thriving, fitting right in.
Moreover, the Red-Dressed Ghost finally understood why Gu Feiyin seemed so terrifying, especially after last night. She could clearly sense the change in her.
-It was all because she had eaten that ghost.
That nameless Malevolent Ghost must have killed many people, so its soul was pitch black and full of malice. After Gu Feiyin consumed it, although there seemed to be no outward change, the Red-Dressed Ghost could sense the ghost’s aura on her.
Dark and sinister, with an evil presence, even more frightening than before.
She was worried that Gu Feiyin might be affected. If Gu Feiyin turned into an evil ghost that fed on human Fortune, the first one she’d probably consume would be her.
“You…” She had been observing Gu Feiyin for a while, and although she looked terrifying lying in the coffin, there was inexplicably a sense of ease about her. Was it an illusion? Who would willingly lie in a coffin every day? “You ate that ghost, are you okay?”
Gu Feiyin felt warm and comfortable all over. Without even opening her eyes, she lazily replied, “What’s the problem?”
The Red-Dressed Ghost widened her eyes. “You’re human. You ate a ghost. Are you really okay?”
Gu Feiyin smacked her lips. It was just a meal, what was the problem? She had always eaten like this before. But now she was human and needed to eat human food. The lamb skewer she had last night was quite tasty; having a midnight snack felt nice.
However… her stomach was feeling a bit off.
Gu Feiyin said, “There might be a problem. I think I ate something bad. I need to use the restroom. Can you cover for me for a bit? I’ll be right back!”
Red-Dressed Ghost: …
…
This was Ma Ao’s second visit to the haunted house in City A’s amusement park. The first time, he had left his mobile phone behind, and the haunted house manager had to retrieve it for him-that incident was the biggest live-streaming mishap of his career.
Afterwards, he felt increasingly dissatisfied because he had heard that there was indeed a person pretending to be a ghost in that coffin. Meaning, despite being prepared, he had been scared out of his wits and fled by a fake ghost!
It was a disgrace of epic proportions in his life!
His live-stream channel, “Brave Ma Ao,” wasn’t very popular initially, but this incident had unexpectedly gained him some followers. Of course, his “Brave Ma Ao” title had been humorously altered to “Timid Ma Ao,” and for the past few days, “timid ghost” had been the most frequent comment in his live-stream. So this time, he was back to clear his name.
Honestly, he was still a bit nervous. That female ghost had left a deep impression on him, making his back go cold just thinking about it. But since she was human, she couldn’t be that scary.
This time, he was live-streaming again, and because of the pre-announcement, the viewership had already surpassed 200,000, with numbers steadily rising.
Ma Ao was a bit pleased. Was this a blessing in disguise?
He entered the haunted house but didn’t rush to open the coffin. Instead, he wandered around, stopping here and there, looking at this and touching that, even chatting and taking photos with the ghost actors he encountered, keeping the audience in suspense.
“Timid Ma Ao, you’re stalling. Are you still scared?”
“I think so too. Maybe he hasn’t gotten over the trauma from last time and is too scared to go.”
“Hahaha, just thinking about Ma Ao dropping his phone and running for his life makes me laugh. Now he’s pretending to be brave, but he’s definitely too scared to go.”
“I thought he was a champion, but turns out he’s a bronze.”
“Don’t be fooled by Ma Ao’s smiling face; he’s definitely panicking inside!”
These comments made Ma Ao roll his eyes. Did these noobs really think he was the same Ma Ao who had been caught off guard the first time? This time, he was prepared and wouldn’t be scared.
Having built up enough suspense, he decided to go for it. This time, he’d prove them wrong!
Around the next corner, he’d see that coffin. And this time, he didn’t feel the oppressive coldness he had felt the first time. It seemed that being prepared meant the atmosphere they had created couldn’t affect him.
He smiled smugly and stepped forward.
The coffin looked the same as before, standing in the darkness, surrounded by a few beams of dim blue light, casting an eerie and terrifying aura. Just one glance was enough to make people back away.
“It looks scary, but it’s just a deliberately created effect. Nothing to be afraid of.”
Saying this, Ma Ao held his phone up to the coffin, taking a few shots before stepping forward to stand in front of it-the coffin wasn’t sealed tightly, as there was a person inside who needed to breathe. It also gave those with weaker nerves a chance to peek without pushing it open.
For the sake of the live-stream, Ma Ao naturally leaned down to peer through the coffin’s gap!
He was mentally prepared. At most, the coffin contained a woman with a terrifying aura pretending to be a ghost-but she wasn’t a real ghost, so there was nothing to fear.
However, when he looked inside, he was met with six eyes staring back at him!
Those eyes were wide open, seemingly bleeding, lifeless, unblinking as they stared at him, the eyeballs even rotating 360 degrees, as if curious-
This sudden encounter made his hair stand on end, his scalp tingling!
How could there be six eyes in one coffin? Three people??
No, how could three people fit inside?
He screamed and stumbled backward, falling to the ground. Looking at the coffin again, he saw blood seeping out, bright red and thick, with a heavy stench of blood assaulting his senses!
“Help! There’s a ghost, ahhhh-!!!”
Ma Ao turned and ran, not daring to look back!
The live-stream only showed Ma Ao peeking into the coffin, then being so scared he dropped to his knees and ran, leaving his phone behind in his panic!
The screen went black, with only the sound of Ma Ao’s distant screams for help, and the comments exploded.
“Hahaha, the slap in the face came as fast as a tornado!”
“Hahaha, I’m dying of laughter. What did you see, streamer, that scared you so much you dropped your phone?”
“Hahaha, why am I so happy?”
“Haha, stop laughing, everyone. Ma Ao has live-streamed many haunted houses before and even spent a night in a famous ghost village. He never lost his composure like this. I’m really curious, is that coffin really that scary?”
“Agreed with the above, now I want to visit. Where’s this haunted house?”
“Raising my hand! I want to go too!”
“Am I the only one curious about when the streamer will come back to pick up his phone?”
…
Inside the coffin, the three ghosts exchanged glances, scratching their heads.
Red-Dressed Ghost: “Did we cause trouble?”
Neighbor Miss: “…”
Old Lady: “…”
They were just curious about what the person outside was doing and had taken a peek…
