Chapter 18
A wealthy heir dies suddenly on his wedding night.
The incident caused a huge uproar, sparking countless rumors-some bizarre, some absurd. Whispers ranged from sudden death during group activities, to hired assassins, and even Thai black magic.
The police quickly concluded that this was no ordinary accident.
“The victim’s body showed no external injuries, but traces of drugs were found internally. Zhou Ye was murdered.”
Was it an act of revenge? The villa had professional security, and there were no signs of external intrusion. This possibility was almost entirely ruled out.
If it wasn’t an outsider, then it had to be an insider.
As his wife, I was the first suspect.
In the interrogation room, the police questioned me harshly.
“During the hour you were alone together, didn’t you notice anything unusual about him?”
Their tone was severe, clearly trying to pressure me. My expression was numb, my eyes swollen from crying, resembling walnuts.
“We had many guests at the wedding. Zhou Ye drank a lot, and so did I. I was dizzy and couldn’t notice anything.”
“Zhou Ye was notorious for being a playboy, with countless women in his past. Even his ex-girlfriend attended the wedding, didn’t she?”
Were they suspecting a crime of passion? My voice trembled with sobs, my heart breaking into pieces.
“Yes, I invited her myself. Officer, I know my husband’s past better than anyone. If I couldn’t handle even this, how could I be a daughter-in-law of the Zhou Family?”
“Besides, we signed a prenuptial agreement. If my husband dies, what do I gain? Even the beneficiary of his insurance policy is my mother-in-law.”
The report came back: Zhou Ye had been poisoned with a slow-acting toxin.
“It doesn’t take effect immediately. The onset requires at least three hours. At the time the victim was poisoned, An Rui was in the dressing room changing into her wedding gown. There were witnesses the entire time. She had no opportunity to commit the crime.”
“The Zhou Family’s business dealings are shady. It seems we’ll need to investigate this as a case of revenge.”
With no means to commit the crime and no motive, I was quickly cleared of suspicion.
As I left the interrogation room, I ran into a familiar face.
Looking haggard, I nodded politely in greeting. As the door closed behind me, I overheard a young officer gossiping.
“Captain Tang, you know her?”
Captain Tang stared at my retreating figure, momentarily lost in thought.
“Yes, I do. Fifteen years ago, her father fled after racking up gambling debts, and her mother abandoned her. I was the one who drove away the loan shark.”
“She was a very determined girl. But… fate hasn’t been kind to her.”
