Chapter 10
We ultimately didn’t go to that rented apartment.
Just stayed in the car.
Jiang Ye lit a cigarette.
Silent.
From the moment I mentioned divorce until now, he hasn’t said a word.
I remained silent too.
This deliberate disgust throughout the journey, now feels a bit lackluster.
While I was disgusted with him, wasn’t I also disgusted with myself?
I took a cigarette out of my bag and lit it.
“How long has it been?”
Jiang Ye’s voice was somewhat hoarse.
“What?”
“You smoking, how long has it been?”
I am five years older than Jiang Ye. When he was still in college, I had already started working.
Back then, just starting work, the pressure was immense.
That’s when I picked up the habit of smoking.
It was Jiang Ye who forced me to quit.
He said, “It’s bad for your health.”
He said, “I’ll buy you candy.”
He said, “If worse comes to worst, hit me to vent, just don’t smoke!”
Later, I really quit and hadn’t touched it since.
Until now, seven or eight years later.
But because of this incident, I relapsed.
If you ask for the specific time, I thought for a moment: “The day after you stayed out all night at Tao Meng’s.”
Jiang Ye’s hand trembled.
The cigarette butt, not yet burnt out, fell onto the leather seat, instantly scorching a hole.
Jiang Ye hurriedly brushed it away with his hand, but it was already too late.
Yet he stubbornly tried to smooth it out, again and again, his strength growing.
Eventually, he lost control, completely erupted, and kicked the car door.
“Damn!”
He said, “I can’t make amends, and you won’t forgive me, right?”
“Mm!”
He sneered sarcastically and extended his hand to me.
“Divorce agreement.”
He didn’t look at what was written on it.
Flipped to the last page and signed his name.
“I’m not going back to that home, I’ll find time to clear my things.”
After saying that, he swiftly got out of the car.
Leaning against the car door, he said to the person on the phone, “Come out, not staying at school tonight. Yeah, I’m waiting at the school gate!”
Hanging up the phone, he raised his eyebrows at me, “Whenever you want to go to the civil affairs bureau, contact me.”
