Chapter 21
The divorce process went more smoothly than I had expected.
Perhaps he cared too much about that child.
Mino drafted the divorce agreement, and Zhou Heng merely glanced at it before signing.
After finishing the procedures at the Civil Affairs Bureau, the staff reminded us that we could only get the divorce certificate after a month.
I nodded.
He stood behind me, hesitating, as if wanting to say something.
“What is it?”
He stared at the bracelet on my wrist, uncertain:
“This… can you give it to me?”
I didn’t say anything.
He seemed to think he was being too ruthless.
It was the anniversary gift he had given me.
To ask for it back right after the divorce-it really was inappropriate.
“I’ll pay extra. Twenty-five million. Is that enough?”
I sighed.
“Zhu Wanwan is truly lucky. So young, and she can make you spend tens of millions for her.”
Zhou Heng’s face darkened, and he hurried to explain:
“It’s my mom…”
I wasn’t interested and interrupted him, handing over the bracelet:
“Transfer the money to my previous account. Thank you for your patronage. If you fancy anything else of mine, contact my secretary.”
…
Mino was waiting for me at a roadside parking spot.
As soon as I settled in, she glanced at Zhou Heng, who was still standing there in a daze:
“You gave the bracelet back to him?”
I shook my phone:
“Sold it for a high price!”
“Didn’t you really like that bracelet?”
I smiled brightly:
“To be honest, I’ve long grown tired of wearing it.”
“That was part of my mother’s dowry for me. Later, when Zhou Heng’s company needed cash flow, I had your brother help me sell off quite a few things. This piece was originally valued at only a few million. Maybe it was because Zhu Wanwan had just gotten pregnant, and Zhou Heng’s guilt toward me was at its peak. I was just curious and looked at it a few more times, and he impulsively bought it.”
“He gave it to me for our wedding anniversary-I never expected that… Now he’s willing to pay twenty-five million to buy it back, and I’ve netted nearly thirty million. I could buy so many better bracelets!”
Mino gently touched my face, her eyes soft:
“Yanyan… If you’re sad, you can cry.”
I was stunned.
After a few seconds, I spoke softly:
“Actually, I’ve been preparing myself psychologically for so many years, so it’s not that sad.”
“Zhou Heng was my own choice. He loved me, treated me well-all those years were real. I can’t blame myself for believing in love just because of how things turned out.”
“Life changes so much, no one can guarantee they’ll be dealt a good hand. But once you sit at the gambling table, you have to have the courage to accept the outcome.”
I wiped away her tears of sympathy, a touch of calm acceptance in my smile:
“When you reach middle age, the greatest lesson you learn is-let yourself go.”
