Good Night, Mr. Ghost - Chapter 44
The peaceful days for the two of them went on for quite a while.
Meng Loudi was handling the company’s affairs with increasing proficiency, able to attend various large events without a hint of nervousness. Bai Lu introduced this newly appointed chairman to the outside world as a relative of a certain board member, now the largest shareholder of Ba Lin Company.
Meanwhile, Jiang Chenyi’s digital art skills saw a modest improvement. When Brownish saw his work, she exclaimed excitedly, “Oh my gosh! Handsome Chenyi, your ghost drawings are amazing!”
Jiang weakly glanced at his screen, “That’s Loudi…”
Well, Loudi is a ghost, after all.
When Meng Loudi saw Jiang Chenyi’s drawing, he sincerely told his beloved, “Chenyi, your drawing of me is so handsome, I feel like I love you even more now.”
Mr. Ghost said this with a blush, and it was a critical hit for Jiang Chenyi. It was true love, indeed.
Due to Jiang Chenyi’s refusal, Mr. Ghost completely gave up on the idea of making Jiang his secretary. Though he did regret missing out on the office…
Having spent so much time in the human world and exposed to the internet, Meng Loudi understood some peculiar things. This wasn’t something Jiang Chenyi wanted to see. But when faced with his lover’s curious expression, Jiang found himself at a loss for words. Truly, a charming troublemaker.
The culprit, Brownish, secretly cast a look of admiration at Mr. Chief.
It was already mid-October, and the weather was starting to cool down. The young man stood in the break room, making tea. Having graduated from college several years ago, he had forgotten most of what he learned, and with Meng Loudi unwilling to let Chenyi be too far from him, Jiang Chenyi had to stay at Ba Lin Company in some capacity.
Bai Lu was at a loss as to where to place him. Eventually, Jiang became the special envoy tasked with delivering miscellaneous items to Mr. Chairman. It was said that sometimes Mr. Chairman’s gaze could be quite intimidating. Jiang stirred his cup with a spoon, thinking it must be a misconception. Perhaps it was because Mr. Ghost was so gentle in his presence.
Just now, the chairman had messaged him, saying he wanted some sweets and a drink, even shamelessly acting cute. Tsk.
The young man prepared the tea, grabbed the freshly baked pastries he had just bought downstairs, and took the elevator to the chairman’s office. After knocking on the door, he used the hand holding the pastries to open it, walked in, and closed the door behind him. What greeted him was a pair of bright, expectant eyes.
Really, like a big dog waiting for its owner. The young man sighed helplessly. How could he be so unfair? He could already imagine Mr. Ghost, when not in the mood to work, sending him a message and then eagerly waiting for him to come up.
“Mr. Chairman, your snacks have arrived.”
“Mm, just put them here,” Meng Loudi said, feigning disinterest as he turned his head away.
Jiang Chenyi placed the items on the desk’s empty spot, handed over the teacup, and asked, “How are you feeling? Are you tired?”
“Mm, a bit of a headache,” Mr. Ghost replied, taking the cup.
“It’s hot, wait a couple of minutes before drinking. A headache? Want me to massage it for you?”
Ghosts don’t get headaches; it was just an excuse to slack off. But Jiang Chenyi was happy to play along.
To be honest, Jiang still had some doubts about certain things. After all, Mr. Ghost had once said something about wanting to imprison him. What if it wasn’t just a joke, right?
Jiang was a man who could adapt to circumstances.
Mr. Ghost nodded eagerly, his eyes brimming with anticipation, “Yes, please.”
Then he lay on the bed in the break room, resting his head on the young man’s lap, feeling the warm fingers gently pressing on his head. It was very comfortable. Indeed, showing a bit of vulnerability was a good thing.
Mr. Ghost closed his eyes and unknowingly drifted off to sleep. Ghosts don’t need sleep, but under certain conditions, they can enter a slumber.
Jiang Chenyi noticed the soft breathing coming from the ghost on his lap. His movements gradually stopped as he watched Mr. Ghost’s peaceful face, silently smiling.
He must be really tired. Even though he’s not human, getting familiar with his duties in just a few dozen days is quite impressive.
He slowly lay down, knowing his legs might go numb, but he didn’t want to disturb the other’s rest.
The young man unknowingly fell asleep too.
Mr. Ghost had a dream. He dreamt of things from a long, long time ago. Back then, he was still human.
In the dream, a fortune teller said he would never find love in this lifetime, at least not while he was alive. Mr. Ghost scoffed at this. With his habits, even if a stranger brushed against his sleeve, he would cut it off. How could he ever accept sharing a bed with someone?
Faces passed by in his mind, both familiar and unfamiliar. Many of their appearances he could no longer recall. He left the palace and moved to a secluded villa. Then he contracted a deadly disease and died quietly.
The cries of those around him, the cold coffin, the strange jade ring shimmering with light. Then, awakening, alone in the tomb. Watching snakes, rats, and insects roam the tomb, trapped like him. But while they were trapped by the tomb walls, he was trapped by the jade ring.
Then, losing track of day and night, staying in the tomb day after day. Until he could no longer bear the bone-chilling loneliness, he had a group of grave robbers steal from his tomb. Then he was taken away, wandering among the living.
Perhaps carefully cherished, perhaps taken out to show off. But those who held him never met a good end. Because he was a ghost, a vengeful spirit trapped in the jade ring, unable to move on.
The resentment born from his imprisonment seemed to be inflicted on those around him, leading to dire consequences. It was a feeling of despair, both hateful and sickening.
He seemed to sink into a strange mire until an old man brought him back to the tomb. He didn’t know how long it had been when he reappeared in the world, only to be placed on a street stall.
It was laughable. A thousand-year-old jade ring, displayed on a small stall, sold alongside a bunch of fakes. Then someone picked him up and took him away. The warmth of their touch awakened the dormant soul. And due to some mysterious factors, the vengeful ghost was freed from his shackles.
Who was it? Who was it? Who exactly was it?!
The image gradually cleared, and the young man’s smiling face appeared, his clear voice calling out, “Mr. Ghost!”
……
Meng Loudi opened his eyes, feeling the warmth beneath his head. He blinked and looked to his side. Jiang Chenyi was already asleep, his body curled up, one hand tangled in his long hair.
Mr. Ghost gazed at him, his eyes filled with undisguised adoration. Like a dragon guarding its treasure, when the treasure fell asleep, he revealed his greedy nature.
Meng Loudi slowly sat up, examining the young man. So good, so cute, how could he like him so much? Liking him to the point of madness. But, but, Chenyi is different. Chenyi is the most important.
So he could suppress his dark thoughts and protect the young man’s soul. He wanted Chenyi to live happily ever after.
Mr. Ghost watched the sleeping young man, his red tongue involuntarily licking his lips. He wanted to devour him, to completely possess him, to make the young man’s eyes filled entirely with him.
Such greed. Having so much, yet still craving more love.
Mr. Ghost leaned down, gently kissing the young man’s cheek, lingering with tender kisses.
Jiang Chenyi was awakened by this gentle disturbance. He slowly opened his eyes and looked at Mr. Ghost. His brown eyes still held a hint of confusion.
“Chenyi?”
“Mm…”
Mr. Ghost’s eyes curved into a smile, “Chenyi, be my secretary. I want to see you all the time.”
“No.” Jiang Chenyi, now fully awake, pushed the man’s face away, “I don’t want to be a femme fatale.”
Mr. Ghost looked a bit disappointed, sighing softly, “I see. But if I promise that when working with Chenyi, I’ll be very serious and efficient? Sometimes I miss Chenyi so much, I want to know what Chenyi is doing, and at those times, I don’t want to work.”
He looked at the young man, “But if Chenyi is right by my side, I can definitely focus, and then I’ll work more efficiently, right?”
Meng Loudi’s face carried a hint of pleading, like a large dog eagerly waiting for its owner’s affection.
Jiang Chenyi covered his face, realizing he had a serious problem. When Mr. Ghost pleaded with him like this, he couldn’t bring himself to refuse!
Oh my, how can this man be so adorable? He didn’t want to refuse him, he couldn’t.
“So, how about it, Chenyi? Shall we give it a try? Just a try? If you feel it’s not working, I’ll do whatever you say.” Mr. Ghost tried to sway the young man’s resolve.
And so, Jiang gave in.
“Alright, let’s try it. If it doesn’t work out, I won’t stay here.”
“Great! Chenyi, it’s already past five. Let’s go have dinner~” Mr. Ghost said with a cheerful smile.
Past five? Jiang thought for a moment. Great, they had slept for three hours. What about the work outside? And no one came looking for him?
As they stepped out of the break room, they saw another “Meng Loudi” sitting in the chair, handling documents. Upon hearing the door open, “Meng Loudi” looked over, smiling, “Chenyi-Ge, Mr. Chief, you’re awake~”
With a puff, the man transformed into the petite Brownish. Brownish patted her brown curls, “I came over and found you both asleep, so I helped with some of the work. If you want to thank me, do me a favor!”
Thus, Jiang Chenyi and Meng Loudi ended up signing thirty photos for Brownish.
Miss Rabbit, holding the signed photos, said, “Wow, this is great. Recently, a signed photo of you two has skyrocketed to ten thousand per piece in our circle. Three hundred thousand in the account, happy~”
“Why are you spreading these around?” Jiang Chenyi asked, amused.
Miss Rabbit thought for a moment, “I guess it’s for a bit of a safety net when facing danger. It seems to imply being under Mr. Chief’s protection.”
Mr. Ghost remained silent on the matter.
