Good Night, Mr. Ghost - Chapter 38
Jiang Chenyi huddled under the covers, listening to the commotion outside, feeling that perhaps it wasn’t as dangerous as he initially thought. Slowly, he wriggled out, poking his head out like a chubby cocoon, and looked at Mr. Ghost, asking, “So, how’s it going?”
Meng Loudi smiled, “It’s fine, it’ll be sorted out soon.”
Then, a flash of red darted over, and before Jiang could react, the covers were yanked away, his face turned, and his chin lifted. The slender, soft fingers carried a faint fragrance.
Jiang Chenyi was utterly bewildered.
The fox spirit scrutinized him, clicking his tongue, “Oh, not bad looking, huh~”
Meng Loudi immediately swatted his hand away, shielding Jiang Chenyi in his embrace, exuding a chilling aura. Even the nine-hundred-year-old fox felt the icy chill.
He retreated a few steps, standing behind Qing Hua, rubbing his arms, half-jokingly, half-seriously, “The eighth is something else, I’m a bit scared.”
The first chief maintained his smile, “Indeed, if he wasn’t truly remarkable, we wouldn’t have agreed to him being the eighth chief.”
Meng Loudi’s lips tightened.
The surrounding black aura spread, causing the demons present to change their expressions.
“Anything else?” Mr. Ghost asked coldly.
Qing Hua smiled, subtly easing the tension, “No, we just came to see you and confirm that you’re capable of taking on the responsibility. Seems like there’s no issue at all. Since that’s settled, we’ll be leaving.”
With the leader’s words, the others promptly left the premises.
Dong Feixi glanced at Mr. Ghost, cheekily remarking, “Your human looks a bit frail.”
Meng Loudi’s face turned as dark as a pot bottom.
The peach tree demon dragged the crow spirit away as if their tails were on fire.
Once outside the villa, Peachy looked at Dong Feixi, sighing, “Why do you always have to be so cheeky?”
Dong Feixi, oblivious, stroked his chin, “I’m just speaking the truth. Look at that human, there’s a ghostly aura about him, doesn’t seem like someone who can live well.”
“…If anything happens to that person, do you believe the eighth will skin you alive? Don’t say such things lightly.”
“Got it, got it, of course, that won’t happen. Peachy will protect me, right~”
Dong Feixi grinned at the peach tree demon.
Peachy blushed, nodding gently, “Yes.”
Being told you look frail by a crow’s mouth is never a good thing.
Jiang Chenyi sat on the bed, touching his face, asking, “Do I really look frail? Is my complexion bad?”
Mr. Ghost held his hand, shaking his head, “No, Chenyi looks great, very healthy.”
“That’s good. Are those your colleagues? They’re all demons.” The human chuckled foolishly.
Mr. Ghost pulled him down, saying, “Yes, but we probably won’t have much interaction in the future. Everyone keeps to their own.”
Jiang touched Mr. Ghost’s face, smiling, “That’s not true. You’ll definitely meet often, since you’re all chiefs.”
“I’d rather not. I don’t like the fox spirit. Do you?” Mr. Ghost asked hoarsely.
Jiang Chenyi looked at his lover, seeing the unease in his eyes, and laughed, “Who doesn’t like fox spirits? They’re pretty and charming.”
“Hmph!” Meng Loudi sulked, turning away, ignoring the young man.
Jiang Chenyi reached out, hugging his waist, resting his cheek on his back, “Jealous?”
Jiang’s voice carried a teasing tone.
“Oh dear, such a small heart. I like the fox spirit purely from an appreciation standpoint, nothing more. What’s wrong? Don’t like me saying I like others?” The young man sat up, kissing the top of his head.
“What should I do then? I like so many people, my dad, my mom, Yuexi, uncle, Yi-Jie, Qiao…”
Mr. Ghost finally reacted, sitting up abruptly, hugging Jiang Chenyi, holding him without speaking.
The young man sighed, returning the embrace, softly saying, “But, I only love Meng Loudi, only love my Mr. Ghost.”
Mr. Ghost grumbled, “No, you don’t love me. You just like my face, my body, my cooking, my housekeeping! You don’t really like me! Don’t love me!”
His words carried a playful challenge.
Jiang Chenyi was amused, playing with his hair, “Do you like me? Love me? What do you like about me?”
Meng Loudi released him, clasping his shoulders, “I like, I like everything about Chenyi, I like Chenyi’s voice, I like Chenyi’s body, I like Chenyi sleeping, I like Chenyi crying, I like Chenyi laughing, I like everything about Chenyi, I love Chenyi.”
His dark eyes no longer held that stubborn madness, but rather a pure, unwavering determination.
It seemed that liking Jiang Chenyi, loving Jiang Chenyi, was an unchangeable fact for him.
Such an expression made one’s heart tremble uncontrollably.
The young man paused, touching his cheek, asking, “Is there anything you dislike? Anything you hate me doing?”
Mr. Ghost looked at the gentle young man, feeling aggrieved, “I hate Chenyi looking at others, I hate Chenyi being gentle with others, I hate Chenyi not being entirely mine. I love Chenyi so much…”
The man’s eyes were filled with grievance, looking pitifully at his lover.
“So cute, I like you too, I like everything about Mr. Ghost, but sometimes, Mr. Ghost really makes me feel helpless.”
The young man’s fingertips caressed the soft skin, silently soothing him.
“You still don’t love me…” Mr. Ghost said petulantly, “I forced you to live with me.”
Jiang Chenyi tilted his head, “If I really didn’t want to be with you, I would’ve run away, right? Actually, I’m not sure if I truly love you, but liking is clear enough. If I lost Mr. Ghost, I feel like I absolutely couldn’t go on.”
“Because of you, I’m no longer lonely.”
The young man’s words gently landed on Mr. Ghost’s heart.
Wasn’t it the same for him?
If not for Jiang Chenyi, Meng Loudi might still be wandering the world, homeless, without a place to belong.
He was willing to wait for Jiang Chenyi to truly fall in love with him.
“When you understand what love is, you must seriously tell me you love me.” Meng Loudi said shyly.
“Okay. Does Mr. Ghost understand what love is?” Jiang Chenyi asked.
“Of course I do. I want to always be by Chenyi’s side, want to give Chenyi the best of everything, want Chenyi to be happy every day, hope Chenyi will cry for me, laugh for me.” Mr. Ghost said, his lips curling up.
Everyone has their own understanding of love.
“This is Mr. Ghost’s love. I like it very much.” Jiang Chenyi’s eyes held a warm spring.
No matter what, being valued by someone feels really good.
“Like it, then like me a little more. When you like enough, you’ll know what love is.” Mr. Ghost pressed his forehead against the young man’s, hugging him as they lay down again.
“It’s late, we should sleep. Chenyi, even in dreams, you have to see me.”
Mr. Ghost knew that to ensure his Chenyi lived a long life and stayed with him forever, he must adhere to a reasonable, healthy lifestyle.
“Okay.” Jiang Chenyi yawned, nestled in Mr. Ghost’s embrace, quickly falling asleep.
What is love?
He knew and didn’t know.
Everyone’s love is different.
After staying in the villa for three days, the two lived a life of leisure.
Every day, the most pressing issue was:
What to eat for breakfast?
What to eat for lunch?
What to eat for dinner?
Is this a life for humans?!
Even being a homebody shouldn’t be like this?!
Every day was either eating, sleeping, playing, or being slept.
Jiang Chenyi couldn’t handle this idle lifestyle anymore, strongly protesting, and Mr. Ghost called Bai Lu, indicating he could go to work.
To celebrate Mr. Ghost’s first day at work, Jiang Chenyi specially found a snow-white three-piece suit and matching shoes from the wardrobe.
The already handsome Meng Loudi looked even more dazzling in this outfit.
Usually cold and indifferent, Mr. Ghost in white added a touch of asceticism, appearing even more imposing and unapproachable.
As for Jiang, he was already captivated by the beauty, casually wearing a set of casual clothes.
This time, Brownish came to pick them up, still dressed adorably.
She sat in the driver’s seat, looking nothing like an adult.
Jiang sat in the back, asking, “Brownish, did you get your driver’s license?”
The rabbit spirit nodded, “Of course! Got it a long time ago!”
“I have another question, what’s your human age?”
“Um, right now, I think I’m twenty-five.” Brownish wasn’t too sure.
“Can you change your appearance?” Jiang was very curious.
“No need, I’ll just say I maintain well, and before I’m forty, I can keep my looks. After forty, um, tweak everyone’s memory a bit, change my ID, and I’m a fifteen or sixteen-year-old beauty again!”
Brownish proudly shook her head.
“Really? About IDs…”
“No worries, we have agreements with humans, changing an ID is quite simple.”
Brownish drove, her voice somewhat ethereal, softly saying, “That’s why I don’t like interacting with strangers, just need to keep in touch with existing friends. But, people in the company always change, only we non-humans remain here forever.”
Jiang Chenyi fell silent.
Indeed, for demons and supernatural beings with much longer lifespans than humans, what kind of mindset should they have towards humans who will inevitably disappear?
Could his Mr. Ghost endure the long days after he leaves?
It must be very lonely…
Just thinking about it made Jiang Chenyi’s heart ache unbearably.
Meng Loudi noticed his lover’s sudden drop in mood, leaned over, and held his hand.
“What are you thinking?”
Stuck in traffic, Brownish slowly stopped the car, looking back.
Her eternally youthful face carried the marks of time, but when she smiled, the sadness was dispelled.
Miss Rabbit smiled charmingly, “Oh dear, did I say something to upset the chief’s spouse? It’s okay, Chenyi, we’re used to it. People around us always leave, some disappear on their own, some are forced to disappear.”
She looked ahead again.
“We’re in this world, we must get used to it. Birth, aging, illness, and death are unavoidable. We just need to accept it with respect.”
Jiang Chenyi raised his head, “Even tragedies?”
“Of course, tragedies have their significance. They help us understand many things, but Brownish doesn’t like tragedies! Brownish likes perfect endings, comedies.”
Miss Rabbit smiled, “I hope everyone can have a comedy.”
Listening to her childish words, Jiang Chenyi didn’t know how to respond.
How could the world be full of comedies?
Tragedies are the majority, right?
That’s why it’s called a “hope.”
It’s just a beautiful wish.
The young man held Meng Loudi’s hand, looking out the window.
Who knows what the ending will be?
