Good Night, Mr. Ghost - Chapter 28
Jiang Chenyi looked around and said, “Lin Yi isn’t here right now.”
“Yeah,” Xu Moli lowered her head, “She should be on that rooftop.”
“So how do we get in?” The young man put his hands in his pockets, scanning the surroundings.
The school gates were tightly shut, and the guard was probably resting, making it highly unlikely they’d open the door for them.
Xu Moli glanced around and said, “Teacher, follow me.”
She led the young man to the side of the gate. Hidden by trees, there was a pile of bricks at the base of the wall, and a hole had been dug out, just big enough for a person to crawl through.
Jiang Chenyi looked at it and said, “I didn’t expect you to know about a place like this.”
Xu Moli seemed like such a well-behaved girl.
Wasn’t this the kind of place those rebellious kids would use to skip class?
Xu Moli had already climbed onto the wall and, hearing this, laughed, “Lin Yi showed me this spot. She took me out once; we skipped gym class to get ice cream from the shop over there.”
Mentioning Lin Yi, the girl’s smile turned bitter.
Jiang climbed up too, saying, “You two seemed really close.”
“Yeah,” the girl replied softly, unwilling to say more.
They successfully climbed over. Here, too, was a cluster of trees, concealing this “secret passage.”
Emerging from the woods, they faced a playground.
Xu Moli pointed into the distance, “There, right over there.”
“Did Lin Yi really jump to her death? I couldn’t find any reports about it,” Jiang Chenyi couldn’t help but ask.
The girl walked ahead, her voice faint, “It’s true. It happened last November, before the snow. Right in front of me, she jumped. When she hit the ground, there might have been a thud, but I’m not sure. As for news, maybe it was suppressed.”
“And Lin Yi’s parents? Didn’t they care?” Jiang Chenyi tried to shift his focus.
Xu Moli chuckled softly, “They didn’t care. Lin Yi’s family is wealthy, but her parents don’t like her. They think a girl can’t inherit the family business. So even when Lin Yi died, they just took her body away, too bothered to even question it. But Lin Yi’s little brother cried a lot; he’s a really cute kid.”
The girl’s voice seemed on the verge of tears.
She walked on, her entire being cloaked in a layer of melancholy under the moonlight.
The sky was clear tonight, a crescent moon hanging above, a few stars visible, casting a gentle glow that added a layer of enchanting illusion to everything.
Jiang felt that Xu Moli truly carried an aura of sadness.
A deep, genuine sorrow because of Lin Yi’s death.
Ghosts can lie, especially when they want to achieve a certain goal.
Jiang knew this from the start.
Lin Yi was lying. She might have altered part of the story or made it up entirely, just to evoke Jiang Chenyi’s sympathy and get him to pass on a message.
Even knowing she was lying, Jiang still helped her.
No reason.
Perhaps because he might cause Xu Moli’s death.
So he followed along.
But Lin Yi shouldn’t be out for blood, right?
Maybe she just wanted to tell Xu Moli something.
They climbed the stairs of the sophomore building, heading up.
The rooftop door was open, revealing the empty concrete floor.
Xu Moli walked up.
The night wind howled, and there was nothing here.
Jiang Chenyi looked around but didn’t see Lin Yi.
“Teacher, is Lin Yi here?” Xu Moli looked at Jiang.
If she was asked to come here at such a special time, there must be a reason, right?
Maybe here, she could see her.
“No, she’s not here. Maybe it’s not time yet.” The young man checked his phone; there were still seven minutes until nine.
Maybe it wasn’t time yet.
They sat on the rooftop, braving the cold wind.
Xu Moli looked at the nearby railing, pointing with a finger, “Back then, Yi stood right there and told me she would jump. Besides me, there were a few others-teachers, classmates.”
She curled her lips, her whole body trembling, her face pale, “I begged her, begged her to come down. No matter what she wanted or asked for, I would agree. But she wouldn’t listen. She said if she came back, after a while, I’d forget her.”
Jiang listened.
This young girl perhaps just wanted to vent the emotions bottled up inside.
“And then she said I was the one who killed her, that she’d make sure I’d never forget her. Then she jumped.” Xu Moli hugged her knees, burying her head in her arms.
“She won. I can’t forget her.” The girl’s sobs were faint, but the young man still caught them.
He reached out, patting her shoulder, “I’m sorry…”
He really didn’t know how to comfort her.
All he could say was sorry. If it weren’t for him, maybe Xu Moli would never have known there was someone who, even after death, still clung to her.
What was Lin Yi’s reason for not resting even after death?
What was the real story?
The young man glanced at his phone, “Time’s up, where’s Lin Yi?”
Xu Moli looked at her toes, “She’ll come.”
She had already come here; Lin Yi would definitely come.
She looked at the young man, her voice firm, “Lin Yi is someone who keeps her promises.”
Then, suddenly, a shadow appeared on the railing. She sat astride it, flicking her short hair, looking at the two huddled in the corner.
Both Jiang Chenyi and Xu Moli saw her.
Lin Yi sat on the railing, a dangerous position where any slip could send her tumbling down.
And she didn’t appear as the tragic figure of death, but as a normal girl.
Wearing a loose school uniform, neat and tidy, with a bright smile.
She was very pretty, with a beauty that carried a hint of heroism.
Xu Moli stood up abruptly, staring intently at her.
Lin Yi sat on the railing, looking at the girl who seemed ready for battle, and softly said, “Moli, you know everything now, don’t you? Everything, you know it all.”
Xu Moli bit her lip, saying nothing.
Jiang Chenyi watched the scene, a bit bewildered.
He stood up too, “Lin Yi? What are you doing?”
Lin Yi ignored him, looking at Xu Moli, tilting her head, “Why, even knowing everything, can you still be friends with me? Moli, can you tell me? Are you really that foolish?”
Xu Moli wavered, frozen in place, a coldness spreading from her heart to her entire body.
Jiang heard the girl’s whisper, she said.
“This is what happened that day, that day is happening again…”
Jiang Chenyi looked at Lin Yi in shock.
Sure enough, even without Xu Moli’s response, she continued her performance.
“Hahaha, Moli, you’re so cute. What? You still think we’re friends? Hahaha, we were never friends! Never friends! I never wanted to be your friend! That damn guy actually liked you and confessed to you! Why? Why him?!”
The girl laughed wildly, pointing her finger at them, her voice sharp, “Who among them hasn’t bullied you, talked bad about you? Just because you look sweet and have a good temper, you won’t even tell the teacher. Xu Moli, if they don’t bully you, who will they bully?”
Her face was filled with malice.
“What’s wrong? Crying again? Yeah, you just rely on your tears to win others’ affection again, to win their guilt. And me? I’m just a fleeting passerby in your life. Once I’m gone, someone else will naturally fill the void, right?!”
She bit her fingertip, laughing again, tears falling with her laughter.
“Xu Moli, what nonsense are you talking about? It’s over, everything can’t go back to how it was. Why can’t everything go my way? Why can’t you be isolated? It’s strange, is it because you’re too good, so even the heavens favor you?”
Her expression was extremely clear under the moonlight.
She looked at Xu Moli, her eyes carrying some dark emotions, her whole being like a beast trapped in a cage, now eager to break free and tear apart the person she was watching.
Lin Yi raised a gentle smile, her words clear and firm, “Moli, you killed me. I won’t let you forget me, Moli, remember, if it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t have died. It’s all your fault, all your fault. You killed me, remember, Xu Moli.”
Xu Moli’s face had already changed. She rushed forward.
Lin Yi watched the girl charging at her, smiled slightly, and finished her lines. She flipped over, her loose clothes flapping loudly in the air.
And Xu Moli took a swift step forward, grabbing the girl’s sleeve. She held on tightly, crying, “I won’t let you die! Lin Yi! I won’t let you die again, please, no matter what, punish me if you want, whatever it is, please, don’t die, please.”
Half of the girl’s body was already over the railing, her tears falling, hitting Lin Yi.
Jiang hurried over to help.
Lin Yi lifted her head, revealing a strange smile, and let out an inhuman laugh, “Moli, my Moli, I’m already dead.”
With that, the sleeve Xu Moli was holding tightly turned to nothing, and Lin Yi, with a joyful smile, fell straight down.
Then, there was a thud.
Jiang felt a chill run through him.
A thud, like an explosion in his ear.
And that sound signified a death, not of a person, but of a ghost.
What was Lin Yi trying to do?
Bringing them here just to show them a one-woman play?
If he hadn’t come, could Xu Moli really have handled it?
The long-haired girl was now slumped on the ground, covering her face, letting out a heart-wrenching cry.
“Please! Please, don’t do this, don’t do this, anything but this, please, don’t die, sobbing, please…”
She was like a floating weed on the sea, with no support.
Once again reliving the greatest nightmare of her life.
And Jiang Chenyi more or less understood, perhaps the real victim back then was Xu Moli.
This quiet girl.
And the abuser, the one who pushed everything, was Lin Yi.
And for some reason, Lin Yi chose to commit suicide.
And her suicide was a jump in front of Xu Moli, perhaps to make sure Xu Moli would never forget her.
