From Dog to Goddess: My CEO Ex's Afterlife Regret - Chapter 10
On Friday night, I received a message from Meng Yichen, saying that my mom and Meng’s father were back from vacation and asked me to come home for dinner.
The message came suddenly, and I had no way to refuse, so I had to go unprepared.
Fortunately, this identity is not close to the mother, so I didn’t have to deliberately act familiar.
At the dinner table, Meng’s father criticized Meng Yichen’s recent performance at the company, while I casually chatted with my mom about adapting to life back home.
After dinner, Meng Yichen suggested to Meng’s father and my mom that I should stay at home for the weekend.
“I have to work overtime this weekend, it’s inconvenient to go.”
“What’s there to worry about with Yichen taking you?” Meng’s father said.
“Brother is so busy at the company every day, how could I disturb his rest?”
I smiled and handled the situation, while secretly sending a message to Gu Xinyi under the table, asking her to come rescue me.
She replied with an “OK!”
“You’re being so distant.” Meng’s father wasn’t ready to let me go.
“Dad, really, there’s no need–”
“It’s fine, sister, I’m not tired.” Meng Yichen suddenly interrupted me.
“I actually have plans tonight, so I won’t stay.”
“Oh, kids grow up, and you just can’t keep them around.” My mom sighed.
“Then I’ll give you a ride later, it’s hard to get a taxi here.” Meng Yichen continued to offer.
“No need, she’s coming to pick me up.”
Hearing this, my mom became interested: “Oh, is it a guy or a girl? Is there something going on?”
“A girl, a girl.” I quickly explained.
The torturous small talk finally ended.
While waiting for the car at the door, Meng Yichen actually followed me out.
“Is the car here yet?” He asked as he approached.
“Almost.” I moved a step to the side, responding coldly.
“How do you know Gu Xinyi?”
“She’s my colleague.”
“Then why are you two so close?”
“Are you doing a background check?”
“No, I just want to figure out if you are Yashu.” Meng Yichen turned to look at me, “Are you?”
His lazy eyes suddenly became clear, sincere, and earnest.
For a moment, I seemed to see the Meng Yichen I once loved deeply.
“So are you?” He repeated.
But my lips were tightly sealed.
After a long while, I finally uttered, “No.”
When the lie left my mouth, I surprisingly felt none of the imagined pain or struggle, only a slight sense of relief.
The light in Meng Yichen’s eyes dimmed bit by bit.
Seeing his disappointment, I felt a strange sense of pleasure.
Then, he regained his usual confidence: “I knew it, your acting is so clumsy, nothing like her. But as long as you don’t pretend to be her anymore, I promise I won’t be angry.”
His words stirred no waves in my heart.
Just watching him perform a one-man show here felt somewhat absurd and pathetic.
When the car arrived, I got in without looking back.
