Forgotten Love - Chapter 30
Gu Huaian seemed to be late.
He kept explaining to his friends that, on the phone, they had agreed to meet at 8 o’clock.
He thought it was just a slip of the tongue, that his friend had said the wrong time.
But he didn’t know that those so-called “friends” never had good intentions to begin with.
“Oh, Gu Huaian, we’re almost done eating and you’re just getting here. What, still think you’re some kind of young master?”
That group took turns mocking and ridiculing Gu Huaian.
Gu Huaian’s face grew darker and darker, his hands at his sides clenched tightly into fists.
But even when those people grew tired of taunting, he didn’t lose his temper or retaliate.
Instead, he forced a stiff smile:
“Brother Ji, you said on the phone you had some secret news related to the Ji Family to tell me, could you…”
“Ah, that matter.”
Ji An looked at Gu Huaian with a half-smile, deliberately lowering his voice:
“Old Master Ji’s eighth illegitimate son has been discovered. I heard it’s with his former daughter-in-law…”
“Brother Ji, are you messing with me?”
“You know what I want to hear.”
Gu Huaian took a step forward, his face suddenly turning grim.
As if startled, Ji An instinctively leaned back.
He was a little annoyed, then sneered:
“Ridiculous, how am I supposed to know what you want to hear?”
“Looking at you, what, are you thinking of hitting me?”
“Gu Huaian, you better think twice. My uncle works at the police bureau.”
“If you get locked up, no one’s going to bail you out…”
Gu Huaian said nothing, just stared coldly at Ji An.
Gradually, Ji An fell silent as well.
He shot a look at the people beside him.
After tossing out one last half-hearted jab,
He led his group away.
I stood not far away, taking in the whole scene.
Just as I was about to step forward, I saw Gu Huaian lower his eyes.
He looked at the table of barely touched dishes.
He called over a waiter passing by.
After confirming the bill had already been paid,
He sat down quietly.
He picked up his chopsticks and poked at the fish in front of him.
“Gu Huaian!”
I called his name loudly.
His hand, halfway to his mouth, froze instantly.
Gu Huaian looked up in confusion.
When he saw me, a trace of embarrassment flashed across his face.
He put down his chopsticks and stood up awkwardly.
“Shen Qingruan? What are you doing here, you… Hey! Where are you taking me?”
I grabbed Gu Huaian’s arm and quickly walked out of the restaurant.
Looking at the food stalls lining the street,
Without a word, I bought something from every stall we passed.
Until Gu Huaian’s hands were stuffed full by me.
“That’s enough, Shen Qingruan, I can’t eat that much.”
His tone was a bit helpless as he suddenly jerked his shoulder,
Pulling his arm free from my grip.
“You…”
My words stopped abruptly.
Seeing my reddened eyes, Gu Huaian opened his mouth, his pupils trembling slightly.
“Why are you crying?”
He asked me softly.
He raised his hand, gently wiping away the tears at the corner of my eye.
“Aren’t you hungry? Hurry up and eat, so you don’t have to eat other people’s leftovers.”
Seeing me turn my head away, my tone cold,
Gu Huaian scratched his head in frustration.
“Those people wanted to humiliate me on purpose, ordered food and didn’t eat it. That restaurant isn’t cheap, I just thought, it’s a shame to waste it…”
The more Gu Huaian tried to brush it off, the more uncomfortable I felt inside.
I glared at him fiercely and turned to leave.
Gu Huaian fell silent, quietly following behind me.
Until we reached the door of my house.
“I won’t go in. You should get some rest.”
He stopped, turned, and was about to leave.
But I grabbed his hand without letting go,
Clutching it tightly, I pulled him inside.
Dad was sitting on the sofa making a phone call.
Hearing the commotion, he turned around.
When he saw Gu Huaian, he was stunned at first.
Then his gaze landed on our joined hands.
“Dad, I want to marry Gu Huaian.”
I took a deep breath and dropped the first bombshell.
The hand in my palm twitched for a moment.
Gu Huaian didn’t move at all, as if frozen in place.
And after a brief moment of shock, Dad’s face turned livid as he shouted:
“Nonsense, Ruanruan! Do you even know what you’re saying!”
“Dad, I want to marry Gu Huaian.”
I repeated, word by word,
Dropping the second bombshell.
“I’m pregnant with his child.”
