Falling for the Best Man, A Second Chance at Love - Chapter 32
On the day of the high school anniversary celebration.
As a renowned alumnus, I was invited back to the school to attend the ceremony.
Walking through the campus I had not set foot in for years.
Following the trail of my memories, I returned to my old high school classroom.
I stepped inside and sat down in the seat I used to occupy.
Lowering my gaze to the desk drawer, I found it still filled with the handwriting of countless students.
Just like we did back then, secretly tucking our thoughts and feelings into the drawer.
Amid the dense words of these young boys and girls, my eyes caught two lines of fresh ink-
[At that time, I lightly parted from the one in my heart; now, across mountains and rivers, where might they be?]
The handwriting was bold and powerful, each stroke deeply familiar to me.
Where had I seen it before?
In the crumpled notes those boys used to pass to me.
In the tender, heartfelt love letters I once received.
In the signatures on countless business contracts.
And on that resolute divorce agreement.
I stood up and walked out of the classroom.
In the hallway, a young couple taking wedding photos came toward me.
The woman looked at her husband, her smile radiant as a blooming flower:
“Quick, let’s take a set of photos in our old classroom.”
The man held the hem of her wedding gown, following closely behind.
“Alright, walk slower. Be careful not to trip in those high heels.”
I curved my lips into a faint smile and stepped aside to let them pass.
Watching their figures gradually fade into the distance, side by side.
I turned around.
Walking down the long corridor, step by step, I left behind the verdant years of my youth.
Life is a journey in constant motion.
I had already walked a stretch of the path with the boy I loved at eighteen, sharing the scenery along the way.
So I no longer begrudge the rest of the journey for lacking brilliance.
