Falling for My Ex's Friend - Chapter 15
Life must go on, and a few days later, I received a message from my boyfriend, subtly indicating he wanted to break up with me.
I called him directly, asking for the reason.
He stammered, unable to explain clearly, so I bluntly asked, “Who threatened you? John?”
“No.”
I thought for two seconds and asked again, “Henry?”
My boyfriend was so frightened he hung up immediately.
I stared at the disconnected phone screen, raising an eyebrow.
Recently, Henry had been unusually quiet, and I thought he had finally given up on me.
Turns out, he was waiting for me here.
I opened Moments, and one of John’s brothers posted an update last night.
“Exhausted for her sake.”
The picture showed John, dead drunk, slumped over the bar.
Even without trying, it’s obvious this post was meant for me.
I clicked on it, enlarged the photo, and noticed in the lower right corner, Henry was playing with his phone.
Truly busy, comforting a brother here, threatening a rival there, even the president isn’t as busy as him.
I snorted coldly and put away my phone.
After work, sure enough, I saw Henry’s car parked at the company entrance.
I carried my bag, ignoring him.
Henry drove leisurely, catching up, rolling down the window and smilingly asking, “Miss, interested in having dinner together?”
For the first time, I reflected on whether buying a house within a fifteen-minute walk from the company for convenience was a mistake.
If I drove to work, I might perfectly avoid Henry’s harassment.
It was rush hour, he drove slowly, and a line of cars behind were honking.
Yet Henry’s psychological resilience was surprisingly strong, not feeling uneasy at all.
In the end, it was me who couldn’t withstand the pressure, took a deep breath, opened the car door, and sat in the passenger seat.
Turning my head, I saw Henry’s mouth and cheekbones were all bruised.
“What’s this-”
John, who was hospitalized from being beaten, had recovered, so why hadn’t Henry’s external injuries healed?
“This? It’s nothing, got into another fight a couple of days ago.”
“Still with John?”
“Not just him.”
“Oh, a brawl?”
“They said a brother’s wife shouldn’t be bullied, don’t know where they got such a sense of justice and morality.” Henry said, somewhat aggrieved, “Besides, how did I bully? Wasn’t it you bullying me?”
When dealing with Henry, I often felt speechless.
He took me, wandering through the city during rush hour for almost two hours.
Finally, I couldn’t help but ask him, “Where exactly are you planning to take me?”
“Finally speaking? Thought you planned to ignore me for life.” Henry smiled, “There’s a pretty good French restaurant, small portions but delicious, wanted to take you there for a long time, how about it, care to try?”
I reluctantly uttered an “Mm.”
Henry’s picky taste didn’t disappoint me with the restaurant he found.
I flipped through the menu, the prices were staggering.
With my current income level, I could afford it, but it still hurt.
Henry handed me a membership card, “Come whenever you want.”
Sometimes I am truly amazed at Henry’s understanding of me.
While eating dessert, Henry mentioned John was hospitalized again due to alcohol poisoning.
“If you reconcile with him now, he’d probably be so moved he’d give you all his assets.” Henry laughed, “Then you can eat whatever delicacies you want.”
I nodded, “You’re right.”
“Actually, staying with John isn’t torture for you, right? If not for the person, then for the money.”
“Are you here as a lobbyist today? Trying to persuade me to reconcile with John?” I looked up at him.
“Just chatting, after so long, you and John should be calm enough. Tell me, what do you think now?”
“Henry, for someone I’ve truly loved, I can’t just be after his money.”
“That’s perfect.” Henry clapped his hands joyfully, “You’ve never loved me, isn’t it just right to be after my money?”
I looked at him expressionlessly.
“In terms of wealth and status, I’m not inferior to John. In terms of physique and stamina, I’m not inferior to your new boyfriend. So, really not considering me?”
Henry continued to promote himself, “Actually, you started a new relationship so quickly just to dilute the impact of the past ten years, right? John hasn’t given up on you, no matter how many you date, he’ll definitely disrupt. But with me, you won’t have this worry.”
I put down the knife and fork, propping my chin and asked him, “Why me?”
“Hmm?”
“You should know very well, I’m different from those wardrobes you could share in the past. If we really dated, the fallout wouldn’t just be between you and John. Is it worth it?”
I had asked Henry this question before.
His answer then was, the unattainable is always restless.
“If we dated, regardless of the duration, regardless of genuine feelings, if you suddenly felt I ruined your brotherly bond, and blamed me, wouldn’t I be at a loss then?”
Henry thought for a moment, “Are you free tomorrow? Let’s go to the property bureau.”
“For what?”
“Give you two properties. That way, if I really regret it, you won’t lose too much.”
“Such a gift, if pursued, I should return it without compensation, right?”
“No, I’ll have the lawyer prepare the documents first.”
I wiggled my finger, “I don’t want property, I want cash. How sincere you are depends on how much cash you can give me.”
After eating and drinking, I picked up my bag, blew Henry a kiss, “Call me when you’re ready.”
