Chapter 43 - Eradicating Evil in Hong Kong (Part III)
The police called an ambulance to take the person lying on the ground to the hospital, then asked Chen Shaoxian and the others to get in the car and return to the police station to give their statements.
As soon as Chen Shaoxian arrived at the station, the Zhuo Family Members and Zheng Lei hurried over.
Before anyone could speak, Chen Shaoxian and Zheng Ruirui were taken by a police officer to record their statements. Just after finishing, someone knocked on the door, calling the officer out.
The officer returned shortly and said to Chen Shaoxian, “Young man, you really went all out. The hospital just called; those guys you fought are pretty much incapacitated. You won’t be leaving any time soon.”
Zheng Ruirui quickly interjected, “But it was self-defense.”
The officer nodded and replied, “I know it was self-defense.” Then, looking at Chen Shaoxian, he asked, “Do you know who you were fighting?”
Chen Shaoxian shook his head without speaking.
The officer pulled out a cigarette, handed one to Chen Shaoxian and lit it for him, then lit one for himself and took a deep drag before saying, “You fought people from the Tong Le Society, a rising force in organized crime. They collect protection money around Temple Street, oversee the area, and engage in various other illegal activities. They’re ruthless, which is why many are afraid to testify against them, and we haven’t had much solid evidence.”
“However, your actions have given us an opportunity, and because of that, your situation is very dangerous. We’re keeping you here for your protection.” He then patted Chen Shaoxian on the shoulder and added, “Personally, I admire what you did. Those guys you dealt with have done a lot of bad things behind the scenes, and you’ve done a public service by taking them down.”
Turning to Zheng Ruirui, he said, “Miss Zheng, your situation is just like Mr. Chen’s, so you must also stay. The police will protect you around the clock.”
“Oh, right,” the officer remembered something and said, “Your relatives are outside, right? I’ll let them in shortly so you can talk.” He then turned and left the room.
As soon as the door opened, Zheng Lei and the others rushed into the room. Zheng Lei approached Chen Shaoxian first, visibly anxious and sweating, saying, “Shaoxian, are you hurt?” The others looked on with concerned expressions.
Chen Shaoxian chuckled and said to everyone, “No worries, not even a scratch. Who would have thought that I’d end up in a fight in Hong Kong?”
Zheng Ruirui looked down, guiltily saying, “Shaoxian, it’s all my fault.” Her eyes reddened as she finished speaking.
Chen Shaoxian glanced at Zheng Ruirui and scratched his head, saying, “If being beautiful is a fault, then I’d rather be a criminal every day.”
His words lightened the mood, and Zheng Ruirui, wiping away her tears, blushed as she looked at Chen Shaoxian.
Zheng Lei, on the other hand, looked at Chen Shaoxian gratefully. The reason Zheng Lei was so concerned about whether Chen Shaoxian was hurt, rather than his own Younger Sister, was because he knew as long as Chen Shaoxian wasn’t down, his Younger Sister was absolutely fine.
Zheng Lei knew Chen Shaoxian too well. Despite his carefree appearance, Chen Shaoxian deeply valued relationships. With Zheng Lei’s connection, Chen Shaoxian would never let Zheng Ruirui face any danger, which was why Zheng Lei had always wanted to introduce his Younger Sister to Chen Shaoxian; he knew Chen Shaoxian would never let anyone he cared about get hurt.
Mr. Zhuo, seeing that Chen Shaoxian was alright, spoke up, “Shaoxian, don’t worry, I will find the best lawyer. I promise you, you won’t have any trouble.”
Chen Shaoxian nodded firmly and then recounted the recent events to those present.
After hearing this, Mr. Zhuo’s expression changed slightly. He said to Chen Shaoxian, “I’ve also heard of the Tong Le Society. They are ruthless but very cautious, never giving the police a handle.”
He reminded the two, “Even with police protection, Shaoxian, you both must be careful.”
After chatting for a bit more, Zheng Lei and the others were escorted out by the police.
After everyone had left, Chen Shaoxian looked around at the furnishings and muttered, “How come there’s not even a bed?”
As he was pondering, three people walked in, the one in the lead was a Middle-aged man who appeared to be a Police Inspector.
Chen Shaoxian felt a strong ominous presence from the Police Inspector, likely someone who had fired a gun and killed before, topped with a halo of righteous energy. Chen Shaoxian looked at him, feeling a sense of familiarity, and thought, “He couldn’t possibly be from the movies, could he?”
The man walked up to Chen Shaoxian and sat down directly in front of him, his face expressionless as he stated, “I am Police Inspector Liang Bi. From now on, I will arrange your accommodations.”
Hearing the surname Liang, Chen Shaoxian interjected, “Do you know Liang Luo?”
The police inspector paused, then looked at Chen Shaoxian and said, “You know my son?”
Chen Shaoxian recounted his acquaintance with Liang Luo, omitting the critical details.
Hearing that Chen Shaoxian knew his son, Liang Bi’s face softened with a smile, and his tone became much gentler, “I remember now, he came home and told us about a new friend from the mainland-that must be you.”
Seeing Chen Shaoxian nod, Liang Bi patted him on the shoulder and said, “You’ve gotten yourself into quite a bit of trouble; even the higher-ups are aware of it. It might even make the headlines tomorrow.” He added, “Personally, I really admire you. Since you know Xiao Luo, feel free to call me Uncle if you’d like.” After speaking, Liang Bi stood up, leading Chen Shaoxian out of the police station.
At the entrance of the police station, there were three police cars parked. Chen Shaoxian and Zheng Ruirui were invited to board the middle one by Liang Bi, who himself took the passenger seat in the lead vehicle.
Once Chen Shaoxian and his companion were seated, they noticed a police officer in front of them, armed to the teeth. Once they were settled, the officer gestured out the window, and the three vehicles started simultaneously.
From the moment they drove off until they parked, the two officers in the front remained expressionless and silent throughout the journey.
Upon disembarking, Chen Shaoxian realized they were at the back door of a hotel.
Liang Bi led them to the door of a room and, pushing it open, said, “You can rest here for now. If you need anything, just speak up; someone will be here to protect you twenty-four hours a day.”
Standing hesitantly outside the door, Chen Shaoxian asked, “Uncle, is there only one room?”
Liang Bi looked at them carefully, surprised, and asked, “Aren’t you two married?”
This question made Chen Shaoxian’s face heat up, and Zheng Ruirui buried her head into her chest, her neck flushing red with embarrassment, yet there was a hint of pleasure in her heart.
Liang Bi looked somewhat embarrassed as he glanced at the two and said, “It was our oversight, but we can’t arrange for someone at such short notice. I see you two are quite close, so please make do for now. I’ll resolve this tomorrow.” After saying this, he pushed them into the room and before closing the door, he informed Chen Shaoxian that Zheng Lei was also under police protection.
After being pushed into the room, Chen Shaoxian and Zheng Ruirui stood there for a while without moving.
Zheng Ruirui is actually a very conservative girl. Although she likes Chen Shaoxian, sharing a room with him made her extremely uncomfortable. She stood there, head bowed, tightly clutching the corners of her clothes as if a little deer was bouncing around in her heart.
The room was so quiet that only their heartbeats could be heard. Chen Shaoxian looked around; the room was spacious, but there was only one bed. He scratched his head and stuttered, “Let’s, let’s sleep,” then suddenly realizing how it sounded, he quickly added, “You take the bed, and I’ll sleep on the floor.”
Zheng Ruirui’s face turned as red as an apple. She didn’t speak but simply nodded her head. She walked straight to the bed, took a look at it, and mustered the courage to say, “The bed is big enough for two people.”
