Chapter 17
Ethan lifted his head and saw me outside the fence, “Why are you here?”
I was startled awake, “That’s what I should be asking you.”
“These are the children I sponsor. Can’t I come to see them?” He stood up and walked towards me.
“You sponsor them?” I widened my eyes in surprise, “Isn’t it under our company’s name?”
“I’m the one who paid.”
“Do you know that Mr. Yu and the others embezzled the funds you allocated?” As I asked this, we had already moved away from the girls to ensure they couldn’t hear us.
“I know.” Ethan’s response was unusually calm.
“Then why didn’t you stop it? Did you allow it?” My heart tightened instantly.
Ethan gave me a helpless glance:
“How could I allow such a thing to happen?
“I’m just waiting for the right moment to close the net.”
I breathed a sigh of relief.
Ethan wasn’t in cahoots with them.
This was the only good news today.
His assistant, standing nearby, couldn’t help but add, “Miss Winters, actually Mr. Sterling is involved in many charity projects, all personally managed to ensure every penny goes directly to those in need.”
I looked at Ethan in astonishment.
The assistant continued, “He also never allows the media to make a big fuss, saying there’s nothing worth boasting about in doing what one can…”
I asked Ethan, “Then why go through our company this time?”
“Because Yu Minghui is a repeat offender.”
Ethan’s answer left me utterly shocked.
“Over a decade ago, I was separated from my family due to an accident and was temporarily taken in by a family living in the Appalachian Mountains, with the surname Winters. Their conditions were very difficult, but they treated me like family. Later, my parents found me, and to repay them, we donated a considerable sum to that family.
“Yu Minghui was the handler at that time.
“I guess that family has never received that donation.”
Ethan looked at me deeply, with a knowing that transcended time,
“Isn’t that right, Avila Winters?”
