Chapter 6
The next day, I used the excuse of a major new project.
I started leaving before dawn and not returning until late at night.
The folding cot in my office became my temporary sanctuary.
My colleagues all said I was working too hard lately.
Li, from the finance department, handed me a coffee and said hesitantly, “Su, you look so pale. Why don’t you take a day off?”
I shook my head and took a sip of the bitter black coffee.
Take a day off?
Right now, I’d rather live at the office.
Business trips were even more welcome.
This month, I flew to Guangzhou three times and Chengdu twice, upgrading my airline membership card to Gold status.
Every time I left with my suitcase, I could see the flash of delight in Chen Chengjun’s eyes.
He’d say with false concern, “Don’t work too hard.”
Then he’d turn around and pull out his phone, unable to hide the smile on his face.
I truly couldn’t accept that the man who once held me in the palm of his hand could now, without batting an eye, trample on my dignity alongside someone else.
Perhaps it was time to leave.
