- Chapter 69 - You Don’t Understand
Shen Qingrang raised his eyes. He lifted one hand, spread his long fingers across her lower back, and pressed her sharply toward him.
Lin Cheng went rigid.
Through a layer of fabric, she felt his heat.
“Goddamn you, Qin Rang!”
It felt as though that small patch of warmth had scorched her entire body.
His breathing grew heavier, his muscles tightening as he shifted slightly upward.
“Mm…”
Bzz. Bzzzz.
A soft sound escaped Lin Cheng’s nose just as the timer buzzed.
Then warm breath brushed her cheek.
“Don’t worry. Jiang Si can handle a little trouble like this.”
At last, the weight hanging over her heart dropped away.
She hurriedly jumped off his lap.
But when her feet touched the floor, her knees buckled and she swayed.
A warm hand caught her.
“Weak at the knees?” Shen Qingrang’s voice was impossibly rough.
Once she was steady, she pulled free, straightened her rumpled clothes, and asked quietly, “Aren’t you coming back?”
A dark flicker of helplessness crossed his eyes. His answer was dangerous and candid.
“Have I not made it obvious enough how much I want you?”
Something seemed to occur to Lin Cheng. She gave one quick, restrained glance downward.
“Then stay here and cool off.”
She fled the dark, intimate room without looking back.
Shen Qingrang put on his glasses and settled loosely against the sofa, his eyes deep and unreadable.
After a long while, he reached down and rubbed a spot on his trousers between his fingers.
Meanwhile, Lin Cheng ran back to the rehearsal room.
She opened the door—and went straight into a mint-scented embrace.
“Mm, Little Chen throwing himself into my arms. I love it.”
Shi Yu bent and sniffed at her neck, his short chestnut hair brushing her delicate skin.
“You’re sweating…”
He raised his eyes. Those round, catlike eyes regarded her mischievously, his innocent tone edged with curiosity.
“Why were you gone so long?”
The heat that had only just left her face threatened to return. She lowered her head and ducked beneath his arm.
Only then did she realize the rehearsal room was empty.
“Where is everyone?” she asked, dodging his question.
Shi Yu beamed and smoothly moved closer again. With an easy extension of his arm, he trapped her once more between himself and the mirror.
“The captain said he wasn’t feeling well, so he let everyone go early.”
He tilted his head and stared intently at her.
Uncomfortable under his gaze, Lin Cheng finally asked, “Is there something on my face? Why do you keep looking at me?”
Shi Yu showed his pointed canines.
“Nothing. Little Chen just looks so cute I want a kiss.”
Her eyes went round. She immediately went on guard.
“I’m a guy! Are you trying to go gay with me?”
Shi Yu licked his lower lip. His smile acquired a wicked edge.
“If it’s you, I don’t mind at all. But…”
“I’m topping.”
Lin Cheng stared. What the hell was that supposed to mean?
There was that little devil again, his tail flicking from side to side.
“Don’t worry. I’ll be very gentle.” His face moved closer.
Just as Lin Cheng raised her hand to rap his forehead, he suddenly let her go.
“Hahahaha! I’m kidding! You actually believed me!”
He laughed until both dimples showed, his sharp little canines flashing in front of her.
Lin Cheng decided Shi Yu was absolutely rotten.
When he finished laughing, he hooked an arm around her shoulders again, though this time he left a little space.
“Don’t be mad. You’ve sulked your lips all swollen.”
Alarm shot through her. She instinctively pressed her lips together.
The delayed knock finally landed on his forehead.
“Ow! That hurts!”
Shi Yu covered his forehead and doubled over. Tears even glistened at the corners of his eyes. He looked terribly wronged.
Her anger eased a little at the sight.
“Serves you right for talking nonsense!”
He peeked at her through his fingers. Her face was still stern, but her eyes weren’t as angry. He immediately straightened, rubbing his forehead as he leaned in.
“I’m sorryyy. It really hurts.”
“Little Chen, can you pet me?”
She looked at his wet eyes, their reddened corners, and the tears still clinging to his long lashes.
In the end, her soft heart won again.
She reached up and vigorously mussed his soft chestnut curls in revenge.
Shi Yu obediently lowered his head, eyes half closed, and rubbed against her palm of his own accord.
It tickled.
Unable to resist him nuzzling her hand, Lin Cheng softened her touch.
“No more nonsense next time. Hear me?”
He nodded sweetly and gave a quiet “Mm,” his throat dry.
As they left, Lin Cheng glanced at the door at the far end of the corridor.
Shi Yu followed her glance, touched his tongue lightly to the roof of his mouth, and spoke brightly.
“Come on, Little Chen! Keep dawdling and Pei Jinye will eat all the housekeeper’s sweet-and-sour ribs!”
He slung an arm around her shoulders and quickened their pace.
Sure enough, neither Jiang Si nor Shen Qingrang was in the dining room.
After lunch, Shi Yu’s words left Lin Cheng uneasy. Taking the first-aid kit, she quietly knocked on Jiang Si’s door.
He answered wearing only a pair of trousers. Wet hair lay across his forehead, and droplets slid down the firm contours of his bare chest and abdomen. The edges of his wound had gone white.
Lin Cheng frowned and squeezed past him.
“You got it wet?”
“Mm. Took a shower.” He closed the door.
Her mouth twitched. He really was far too unconcerned.
“If you don’t want it getting infected,” she said, opening the kit, “keep it out of the water.”
“Oh.”
She rolled her eyes. Oh, my ass.
“About Hanzhou…” she began softly as she carefully applied the antiseptic.
“It’s fine,” Jiang Si interrupted. “Don’t worry.”
She had just breathed a sigh of relief when someone knocked.
Then Shen Qingrang’s gentle voice followed.
“Si, it’s me.”
Lin Cheng paled. She straightened in a panic and searched the room until her gaze landed on the wardrobe in the corner.
Jiang Si’s eyes darkened. He caught her wrist.
“Why hide?”
She shook him off, lowering her voice, embarrassed and exasperated.
“You don’t understand!”
Then she opened the wardrobe and curled herself inside.
Jiang Si’s distinctive cool sandalwood scent engulfed her, filling her nose.
She cautiously peered through the slats in the louvered door.
Click.
Outside, Jiang Si opened his door.
“What is it?”
Shen Qingrang stood in the hall, his gaze passing casually over Jiang Si’s injured, bare torso.
“Lin Chen told me you were hurt. I came to check on you.”
“Lin Chen told you?”
Jiang Si’s mouth seemed to move in the faintest smile.
So she had gone to Shen Qingrang because of him.
“Well, you’ve checked.” He shifted, apparently about to close the door.
But Shen Qingrang raised a hand to stop it. His gaze moved past Jiang Si to the first-aid kit on the floor.
Then his nostrils stirred slightly.
