Demonic King of the Metropolis - Chapter 1 - A Stunning Beauty
In Jingdu City, the evening lights were just coming on.
Inside the presidential suite of a five-star hotel, Tang Jie stood on the balcony, gazing at the night view adorned with twinkling stars.
Tang Jie appeared to be around eighteen or nineteen years old, with eyes that were deep and spirited set on a sun-kissed face. His nose was high and straight, and his lips naturally curled into a slight smile, giving off a carefree vibe.
At that moment, the phone inside the room suddenly rang. Tang Jie left the balcony and picked up the phone, speaking, “Old man, you looking for me?”
On the other end was a jovial scolding voice, “You rascal… you’re the only one who dares to call me that. I’ve got a new task for you!”
Hearing this, Tang Jie frowned slightly and said, “But I haven’t finished my current task yet!”
“No need. Abandon your original mission immediately and listen to what I have to say.” The old voice on the phone replied.
“Go ahead!” Tang Jie shrugged.
“You need to head straight to G City in G Province and find Chen Jiankai, the chairman of Chen Group. This task involves protecting his daughter, Chen Shuran, for three months. Once you complete the mission, you can do whatever you want.”
“Really?” Tang Jie asked, the frown on his brow easing into a smile.
“You rascal, when have I ever lied to you? I’ve sent all the information to your email. Check it out yourself. You’ll be protecting a stunning beauty this time.” The old man’s voice came through the phone with a hint of amusement.
“Alright!” Tang Jie replied, hanging up without much ado. A smile broke out on his face as he thought happily, Once this mission is over, I’ll finally be free. The old man won’t be able to control me anymore, hahaha.
A day later, as Tang Jie stepped into the main entrance of the Chen Group building, he was greeted by a man in his fifties with a square face, medium build, dressed in a formal black suit, standing upright and waiting for him.
Seeing Tang Jie arrive, the man approached slowly, gave him a once-over, and asked, “Hello, are you Tang Jie, Mr. Tang?”
Tang Jie nodded without surprise. Every time his master assigned him a task, all the arrangements were already taken care of, and all he had to do was execute the mission without worrying about anything else.
Seeing Tang Jie nod, the man didn’t waste any time and said, “Please follow me, Mr. Tang. Mr. Chen has been expecting you. My surname is Zhao; you can call me Uncle Zhao.”
The Chen Group headquarters had thirteen floors, with Chen Jiankai’s office on the top floor. They entered the elevator in silence, and once they exited, Uncle Zhao led Tang Jie to Chen Jiankai’s office door, knocked, and entered upon receiving a signal.
“Mr. Chen, Mr. Tang has arrived!” Uncle Zhao announced respectfully as they entered.
“I’ve told you so many times, Zhao, stop calling me Mr. Chen. You’ve been with me for so long; you know my nature. I treat you like a brother; just call me Chen,” said the middle-aged man in a white suit, rising from his leather office chair as they walked in.
“Tang Jie, I’m Chen Jiankai, the one your master spoke about, and the person who commissioned this task,” Chen Jiankai said, turning to Tang Jie as Uncle Zhao stepped aside.
“Hello, Mr. Chen!” Tang Jie took note of Chen Jiankai. He was about the same age as Uncle Zhao, but unlike Uncle Zhao, Chen Jiankai exuded a subtle aura of authority.
“No need to be so formal. I have some ties with your master, and I assume he’s briefed you on the task?” Chen Jiankai smiled warmly, gesturing for Tang Jie to sit on the sofa.
“Yes, my old man told me to visit you first after arriving in G City.” Tang Jie set down his backpack and took a seat across from Chen Jiankai.
“The disciple your senior trained sure is unique. I doubt there are many who dare address him that way,” thought Chen Jiankai, and then continued, “Since you’re new here, and unfamiliar with the place, I’ll arrange accommodation for you first. Uncle Zhao will brief you on my daughter’s situation. I’ve already informed her about you. Once you have the details, you can go and see her.”
“Alright!” Tang Jie had no objections. Just the thought that this was the final task promised by the old man, and he would soon have the freedom to do as he pleased, filled Tang Jie with joy.
“Zhao, go ahead and arrange a place for Tang Jie to stay,” Chen Jiankai said, looking up from the sofa at Uncle Zhao, who was standing nearby.
“Yes, sir!” Uncle Zhao nodded and then left Chen Jiankai’s office with Tang Jie.
It was a scorching summer day, with the blazing sun hanging high in the sky, draping the land like a massive furnace. The afternoon streets were sparsely populated.
A black stretch Lincoln sped down the road, with Tang Jie sitting inside, quietly observing Uncle Zhao as he drove.
“Uncle Zhao, did you injure your left shoulder?” Tang Jie asked after a moment of silence.
At these words, Uncle Zhao’s body involuntarily tensed. Through the rearview mirror, his expression of shock was evident. “Mr. Tang, how did you know?”
Tang Jie smiled and replied, “Uncle Zhao, just call me Tang. I learned a bit about medicine from my old man growing up. Observing your driving, I can see that your left shoulder is somewhat inconvenient. Although the movements are subtle, I can still notice them.”
“Then, Tang, can you heal it?” Uncle Zhao’s eyes flashed with an almost imperceptible sadness, mingled with a greater sense of anger.
The injury to his left shoulder had brought him unspeakable humiliation, and it was a permanent source of pain in his heart.
Even Chen Jiankai was unaware of the injury to Uncle Zhao’s left shoulder. Uncle Zhao hadn’t expected that the young Tang Jie could detect it from a mere subtle movement.
