Chapter 6
Chapter 6
Unfortunately, despite spending nearly a year parading different pretty girls in front of Jiang Yilin just to get his attention, he remained indifferent.
He never spared me so much as a glance.
I was forced to work even harder in secret.
I often studied by lamplight until the middle of the night.
Even my brother couldn’t stand it anymore and came to knock on my bedroom door.
“If the academic pressure is this high-” he said, frowning, “I’ll transfer you to another school.”
“No need.” I stopped him immediately.
I could only continue using my studies as an excuse to deal with him. “I’m not tired at all.”
I added, “I feel very fulfilled.”
I remained clear-headed, tracking the plot’s progress through the bullet comments.
The time for the female lead to appear was drawing closer and closer.
I just wanted to work hard, and then work even harder.
I had to work until I was capable of using my own methods to help my brother avoid his destined death.
I had designed all sorts of chance encounters.
Trying to get noticed in front of Jiang Yilin hadn’t caught his attention in the slightest.
But during the school-wide assembly on Monday morning, things changed.
When my homeroom teacher asked me to speak on behalf of the honor students, I unexpectedly ran into Jiang Yilin backstage at the podium.
At that moment, I was leaning against a pillar, looking down at my speech notes.
Suddenly, I heard someone exclaim in surprise, “Whoa-she’s really got stamina. She actually chased you all the way here?”
I looked up instinctively.
My eyes met Jiang Yilin’s gaze.
His friend’s expression was exaggerated, which only served to highlight the calmness in Jiang Yilin’s eyes.
He was wearing a clean, neat blue-and-white school uniform, standing in the sunlight, watching me with a cold, detached air.
At the front of the podium, the dean had already called my name.
I gave Jiang Yilin a slight nod.
Only then did I turn around with my speech in hand.
After returning that day, I took the grade-skipping exam.
When the results came out two weeks later, I had skipped two grades and transferred into Jiang Yilin’s class.
The day I transferred was my sixteenth birthday.
In the elite class where Jiang Yilin was, he was the only one sitting alone in the back row.
By a twist of fate, I became Jiang Yilin’s desk mate.
And there were less than two years left before the female lead was set to appear.
When I moved my desk and chair next to Jiang Yilin’s, he was leaning by the window, eyes downcast as he read a book.
His profile was cold, and he had absolutely no intention of acknowledging me.
However, a boy in the front row turned around and looked at me with amusement. “Do you know that you’re famous in our class-even in our entire grade?”
I looked at him, puzzled.
The boy shook his head and said, “There are plenty of girls chasing Brother Jiang, but none have gone as far as you. You skipped two grades for him, and now… you’ve even become his desk mate.”
He continued, “Everyone knows you like our Brother Jiang. You like him to death.”
I paused for a moment.
Of course I didn’t like Jiang Yilin.
In fact, I had always loathed him and stayed wary of him.
But I knew my actions invited suspicion.
And since Jiang Yilin was sitting right next to me, I didn’t deny it.
My unusual behavior naturally caught the attention of those bullet comments as well.
They had been appearing before my eyes for over a decade, but this was the first time they noticed me, a side character-
[Who is this? How did she become the male lead’s desk mate?]
[Wasn’t the male lead a lone wolf throughout high school?]
[More than that, the male lead was a lone wolf until he met the female lead.]
[The male lead looks cold and clean on the outside, but his inner self is actually gloomy and twisted.]
[I bet this is another one who got fooled by the male lead’s looks and is throwing herself at him.]
[But I think her name sounds familiar. Huo Zhiyan… isn’t that Huo Silü’s younger sister?]
[Why is she after the male lead too?]
[It doesn’t matter who she is, it’s useless. The male lead will only fall in love with the female lead; it’s only possible for it to be the female lead.]
[She’s overestimating herself by getting close to the male lead. She’ll just end up with the same fate as her brother.]
