Chapter 5
I swear, before I saw his face, I was genuinely a little annoyed.
But.
After entering the office, the crisp, cool fragrance hit me, making my heart tremble. The first thing I saw was Gu Xuchen’s indifferent yet exquisite face.
“President Gu, please review this contract.”
“President Gu, here’s this week’s project report.”
“President Gu…”
One “President Gu” after another.
I was so bored I almost wanted to yawn, but Gu Xuchen handled everything methodically, only stopping when it was time to get off work.
“Mm.”
With my suit jacket draped over my shoulders, I rubbed my eyes sleepily, almost thinking I was dreaming, and mumbled:
“Hubby, food, hungry~”
“Speak properly.”
Gu Xuchen’s voice was cool and clear.
I shivered, suddenly opening my eyes wide: “I-I’m hungry.”
Gu Xuchen: “What do you want to eat?”
I pursed my lips, falling into thought, but as I thought, my attention suddenly shifted.
He was so close.
The collar of his shirt was open, and I could easily catch a glimpse of his collarbone and the slightly prominent Adam’s apple.
“Tell me when you’ve decided.”
Gu Xuchen averted his gaze, his distinct fingers lifting slightly as he buttoned up his shirt without a trace.
“Why are you buttoning up? It’s so hot today.”
I asked knowingly.
Gu Xuchen held his phone, his brows lightly furrowed: “I’m not hot.”
Me: …
I couldn’t help but chuckle, sitting directly across from him at his desk, resting my chin in my hands as I gazed at him.
Gu Xuchen glanced up unintentionally, met my eyes, paused for a second, then looked down again:
“What do you want to eat? I’ll order now.”
“I want… wife cake! Husband and wife sliced beef!”
Gu Xuchen: …
Gu Xuchen couldn’t help but glance at me, his lips pressed together as he started ordering food.
By the time the food arrived,
I was already so hungry I was lying on the desk, but cheers came from the outer office, and I couldn’t help but look over.
“Come on, everyone, the boss is treating us! After finishing this project, our team gets paid leave!”
“Thank you, boss~”
The scent of food filled the room under the fluorescent lights.
I couldn’t help but envy the employees of Gu Corporation.
Actually, when I graduated, I thought about looking for Gu Xuchen, joining the Gu Family’s company, and working hard to stand by his side.
But!
The benefits of this job were just too good, and the people who came to interview were the most competitive of the competitive.
Unfortunately,
I was eliminated in the second round of interviews…
Back then, I was truly poor, and honestly a mess.
After failing the interview despite giving it my all, I was left with nothing but my basic documents. My family kept urging me to take the civil service exams so I wouldn’t waste my status as a fresh graduate.
But my dream was design.
When dreams couldn’t fill my stomach, I was embarrassed but didn’t want to bow my head.
I owed rent, owed utilities, and the landlord chased after me every day.
Fortunately, after all the twists and turns, I still met him.
Just seeing him made me happy.
It felt like all the longing I’d accumulated over the years finally had an outlet, and that fluttering feeling of admiration started to spiral out of control again.
“Aren’t you hungry? Come here.”
Gu Xuchen tidied up the coffee table, and his assistant placed the food on the table, giving me an extra glance.
I curved my lips and cheerfully introduced myself: “Hello, I forgot to introduce myself earlier. My name is Ye Min.”
The assistant paused, then chuckled: “Hello, hello, I’m President Gu’s assistant, Tan Bai.”
Tan Bai?
I raised my eyebrows, feeling that the name was familiar. After thinking for a moment, a lightbulb went off in my head.
Wasn’t he my interviewer back then?
Just as I was about to speak, Tan Bai shook his head at me, and I grinned sheepishly, closing my mouth.
“How long are you two going to stare at each other?”
Gu Xuchen leaned back on the sofa, forcefully breaking apart the bamboo chopsticks.
“Uh, I have things to do. President Gu, enjoy your meal.”
Tan Bai took the opportunity to leave.
I was overjoyed, sitting beside Gu Xuchen, wiping my hands with a wet wipe and opening the lunchbox.
“Why were you staring at Tan Bai?”
Gu Xuchen suddenly asked.
I was picking up food, and when I heard his question, I couldn’t help but laugh and retort: “Otherwise, should I be staring at you?”
Gu Xuchen frowned, looking serious: “We got married too hastily. I didn’t have time to check your background. I’m worried you’re a corporate spy.”
Me: …
That answer was truly flawless.
I couldn’t help but want to laugh, curling my lips at him: “Yeah, I’m a spy.”
Gu Xuchen: ?
Me: “I’m a spy who’s here to steal your heart~”
Gu Xuchen was slightly stunned, his brows furrowing: “Smooth talker.”
I picked up some food, humming: “Not at all, I’m telling the truth. My eyes are only for you~”
Gu Xuchen’s jaw tightened, as if he wanted to say something but stopped several times, then said quietly: “Eat.”
I giggled, boldly saying: “Okay, I’ll listen to hubby~”
Gu Xuchen: …
I blinked at him, and before he could speak, I pouted: “We have a marriage certificate. Calling you hubby isn’t too much, right? I don’t mind if you call me wife.”
Gu Xuchen: …
Maybe he couldn’t win against me, so Gu Xuchen fell silent, while my heart felt like a jubilant bird, chirping away, calling him hubby.
