Chapter 8
“Did you guess it?”
“There aren’t many people with the surname Mi.”
“Be careful. Just because she seems friendly on the surface doesn’t mean she’s truly kind.”
“Mi Yang has been transferred, did you know?”
“I really didn’t know. Was it a transfer to a less busy or more busy position?”
“Less busy.” Understanding the overall dynamics of our partners is a basic requirement in our line of work. When Mi Duo mentioned her name, I already had a hunch.
Seeing that I wasn’t rushing to meet, Qi Dong relaxed his tense arm by an inch. “That’s fine. You should submit a report on their personnel changes to the Secretarial Office tomorrow. When the time is right, I’ll have someone arrange a meeting.”
“Okay.” I nestled into the passenger seat, tilting my neck to stare at Qi Dong.
“What are you looking at?” he asked.
“Boss Qi, do you want a drink?”
“Are you trying to get me to take you home? You just took your medicine this afternoon.”
“True. Then how about some tea?”
“Do we have to drink something?”
“Eating something works too.”
“Didn’t you just eat enough?”
“Li Bin didn’t come to bother me. Was it you who stopped him?”
Uh…
My question was abrupt. Qi Dong didn’t answer immediately, but he wasn’t flustered as I imagined. He calmly drove through two intersections before replying.
“Yes.”
I waited two intersections before responding, “Oh.”
His pupils trembled. “That’s it?”
“That’s it.”
An adult’s rejection is pretending not to understand what they already know.
After knowing Qi Dong for so many years, I can read him like a book. For someone who usually keeps work and personal matters strictly separate to suddenly break his principles, either the situation is special or the person is special.
In this era where novelty and fickleness are the norm, I boldly concluded that the person is special enough.
I ruthlessly snuffed out Qi Dong’s budding feelings. With my current mindset, I’m not suited for a new relationship.
Someone who is always successful in the business world was left speechless by me.
After giving me a death stare, he said, “Your parents have been stopped too. Find time to deal with it yourself.”
“Alright.”
Qi Dong probably uses all his patience on me. He never interferes with my decisions or tries to control my actions. Stopping Li Bin was just to prevent another fight between us.
Although I’m sure Li Bin doesn’t have the guts to try again.
I accepted Qi Dong’s goodwill and continued to work overtime diligently.
Until the next mediation, Qi Dong insisted on driving me to the Police Station. As I entered, I saw Li Bin.
He wore a jacket, dress pants, and a white shirt. I wore a suit skirt, high heels, and carried a handbag. We both looked so proper, it was hard to believe we’d ever fought.
He came over and said politely, “Chen Nuo, I’d like to talk to you.”
He stared at me, not sparing Qi Dong a glance, his emotions restrained and guarded.
I glanced at Qi Dong. The words were directed at me, but the restraint was for Qi Dong.
Qi Dong looked back at me, then smiled at Li Bin and said to me, “I’ll wait for you outside.”
Immediately, I saw a hint of timidity in Li Bin. Clearly, stopping harassment was more than just stopping. Qi Dong’s methods have always been rather dark.
“Let’s talk,” I agreed.
After five years together, I wanted to see what other faces this man had that I hadn’t seen yet.
