Chapter 3
I always knew there was something wrong with me.
I harbored the most filthy, shameful feelings for my own brother.
The last time I saw Fu Liuchuan was on my twenty-first birthday.
As usual, he had someone send over a rack of haute couture gowns for me to choose from and threw me a lavish party.
But he wouldn’t see me.
I walked past the glittering lights of the living room and the pool, and, as expected, found his car parked outside the gate.
He saw me through the half-open window and flinched.
“You should be inside with your friends, celebrating your birthday.” His voice was faint, tinged with a detached coldness.
The words I wanted to say died on my lips.
I adopted a mocking tone instead. “I just came out to check. You didn’t even show your face at my party. I thought maybe you’d dropped dead out here.”
He turned his head slightly. “Are you disappointed to see me alive?”
I scoffed. “Of course.”
“After all, if you really were dead, all of the Fu family’s assets would be mine.”
“I’d pop a bottle of champagne to celebrate.”
Fu Liuchuan fell silent.
The dim streetlights couldn’t penetrate the car’s interior.
Most of his face was shrouded in darkness, his expression unreadable.
In that moment, I was almost grateful.
It was better this way.
At least I didn’t have to see the blatant disgust in his eyes.
I knew Fu Liuchuan hated me.
When I was fourteen, my mother and his father died in a car crash during an argument.
From that day on, he would greet me with a cold face every time we met, telling me to stay away from him.
I would fire back, unwilling to show weakness. “You think I care about you? Sharing a table with you makes me lose my appetite.”
Our relationship grew more and more strained.
To avoid seeing me, Fu Liuchuan even moved out of the Fu family home where he had lived for over a decade.
He was always such a calm and rational person, yet when it came to me, he couldn’t even maintain a basic level of civility.
He must have hated me to the core, yet he couldn’t get rid of me.
I had wondered countless times.
If I died…
What would Fu Liuchuan think?
Would he… would he feel even a flicker of sadness?
Or would he smile and tell everyone:
“My sister? We weren’t even related by blood.”
“Her death is nothing but a relief.”
