- Chapter 92 - Song Yu Found Me, Chi Jin's Conclusion and Astonishing Truth
Today’s weather is gloomy, just like my mood.
I stand by the window, picking up and putting down the phone in my hand, repeating this cycle all afternoon before finally dialing the number that I know by heart.
Song Yu answers faster than I expected, almost instantly.
“Hello!” The man’s urgent voice comes through.
Perhaps it’s been too long since I last heard Song Yu speak, but just that one word makes my heart tremble.
I hold my breath, not responding immediately.
“…Bai Yu, is that you?” Song Yu’s tone shifts from urgency to excitement.
I’m not surprised that Song Yu guessed it was me, because I called his private number.
“Is it you? Bai Yu, say something, it’s you, isn’t it?”
“It’s me!” After a long pause, I reply softly.
Song Yu lets out a long breath, his voice slightly choked and somewhat aggrieved: “I thought you’d never speak to me again in this lifetime.”
I chuckle coldly: “Song Yu, is there any need for us to say such hypocritical things?”
“Didn’t you already calculate that I would come looking for you?”
“First, you deliberately leaked the offshore oil project to me, then watched me eagerly pass your false information to Chi Jin. Chi Jin knows I hate you, so what I say must be true, and finally, you watch him walk into the trap.”
“Isn’t that right?”
Song Yu remains silent, neither confirming nor denying.
“M Country!”
“Saint Riof? Is it a hospital?”
“So let me guess, you actually had full confidence in bringing down Chi Jin’s family, and then forcing Chi Jin to hand me over, right?”
“In the end, I was just a pawn used by you from the beginning to the end, yet I escaped your grasp, which must be quite frustrating for you, right?”
“If everything I said is correct, then congratulations, you’ve achieved your goal.”
“I don’t know what conditions you want to exchange with Chi Jin, I just hope you don’t push him to the brink.”
“Other than that, whatever you want me to do, I will agree.”
“No, you have to promise me you won’t make things difficult for Chi Jin, then I’ll send you the location.”
But I have no way out. I can’t protect Lu, can’t protect my father and sister, Chi Jin is the last person I can protect.
No matter what his intentions were in the past, at least during the six months I came to M Country for treatment, he was my only support and companion, so I can’t just watch him be pushed to a dead end by Song Yu.
Song Yu still doesn’t speak, leaving me in an awkward position.
Did I misjudge?
Did Song Yu not intend to find me?
Or am I not important enough to negotiate with him?
Finally, after a long silence, Song Yu speaks.
“I thought Chi Jin would use you to negotiate with me, I didn’t expect you to come to me voluntarily.”
I snort: “What’s the difference?”
On the other end, there’s a deep breath, as if suppressing something: “Where are you now? I’ll come find you.”
“NY in M Country!”
“I know, where are you, I’m also in M Country.”
“I’m at Saint Riof.”
“Saint Riof? Is it a hospital?”
I laugh coldly inside, Song Yu doesn’t even know about Saint Riof, yet he once confidently said he would take me to M Country for treatment.
“It’s a Cancer Center.”
“There’s no Saint Riof Cancer Center, where exactly are you?”
I’m a bit confused, I’m clearly at Saint Riof, how could there be no such place?
Song Yu continues: “Can your phone send your location?”
“It can.”
“Send me your location, I’ll come find you.”
“No, you have to promise me you won’t make things difficult for Chi Jin, then I’ll send you the location.”
Even though I’ve never succeeded in negotiating with Song Yu before, I still have to try once.
“Bai Yu!” Song Yu lowers his voice.
“This is my bottom line, if you can’t do it, I won’t meet you.”
After another long silence, Song Yu reluctantly agrees with a single word.
With Song Yu’s promise, I send him my location.
To prevent Song Yu from going back on his word, I specifically call Chi Jin, asking him to come to Saint Riof Hospital immediately.
Chi Jin thinks my condition has worsened, and he hurriedly agrees. I tell him I just have something to say to him, not to worry, and hearing this, Chi Jin is relieved.
I originally thought Song Yu would come quickly, but Chi Jin arrives and Song Yu is still nowhere to be seen.
Chi Jin sits by the bed and opens the thermal container he brought, inside is soft minced meat porridge, though calling it minced meat is a stretch, it’s just some tiny meat bits.
“Try it, Dr. Nalisha said you can have a little meat now.” Chi Jin scoops a spoonful of porridge to feed me.
I push the spoon away without eating directly, and say: “Chi Jin, I have something to tell you.”
Chi Jin smiles: “What’s so serious?”
I purse my lips, gently exhale and say: “I spoke with Song Yu.”
The smile on Chi Jin’s face freezes instantly.
After a while, he asks with a darkened face: “Why?”
I know he’s angry, I had promised him not to meet Song Yu again.
“Chi Jin, listen to me, I…”
“Bai Yu, do you know what this means? Song Yu found you, he won’t easily let you go, he’ll keep you by his side, you need to focus on recovering.”
“I know, but I don’t want you to go bankrupt and get arrested!” I interrupt him loudly.
After saying this, Chi Jin falls silent.
“Chi Jin, I know you care for me, afraid I’ll get hurt, I feel the same, I worry about you too, I don’t want to see you suffocating under Song Yu’s grip, do you understand?”
“Lu is gone, my sister is muddled, my father was implicated and died, Chi Jin, I can’t lose you too, or I’ll carry guilt for life, never at peace even in death.”
I look at Chi Jin firmly, my tone unwavering, it’s my false information that led Chi Jin to this predicament, I must take responsibility, not hide behind him comfortably, otherwise I might as well be dead.
Chi Jin silently lowers his head, picks up the spoon again to feed me porridge: “Drink the porridge first, it’ll be bad if it gets cold.”
I nod, open my mouth and drink it, it’s soft, fragrant, and tastes particularly good.
“Really delicious.” I smile and give a thumbs up.
At this moment, the door of the ward is pushed open, Chi Jin and I look over simultaneously, and the familiar yet long-unseen man appears at the door.
Song Yu is dressed in a black shirt, sleeves rolled up, tailored trousers hugging his straight legs, tall and neat.
He’s also looking at me, his gaze not sparing Chi Jin, the intense stare seems to want to pierce two holes in me.
Chi Jin never expected Song Yu to appear here. He sprang to his feet. “How did you find this place?”
“I told him,” I said calmly.
Chi Jin turned to look at me, as if he couldn’t believe I could get Song Yu here so quickly.
Song Yu’s face was tense as he walked toward me. Chi Jin blocked his way, eyeing Song Yu warily. “What do you want?”
“Step aside!” Song Yu snapped coldly.
Chi Jin puffed up his chest, refusing to yield an inch. Sparks flew between the two of them, as if they might start fighting at any second.
“Chi Jin, let him come. I have something I want to say to both of you,” I said.
Hearing my words, even though Chi Jin was unwilling, he could only step aside. But he still kept a close eye on Song Yu, afraid he’d do something out of line.
Song Yu walked to my bedside. He didn’t sit in the chair next to me, but instead knelt on one knee in front of me, looking up with eyes full of pain and regret.
He took my hand, which rested atop the blanket. My hand was pale, almost fleshless, the veins fragile and hard to heal from long-term IVs, covered in bruised pinpricks.
Song Yu gently stroked the back of my hand, his eyes lingering on my face. “Bai, you’ve lost so much weight.”
I lifted the corners of my mouth in a slight smile but said nothing.
Song Yu lowered his gaze, his posture humble to the dust. “I know I did a lot to hurt you before. I’m sorry, Bai, I beg you, forgive me, don’t leave me.”
“These past six months I’ve been searching for you, Bai, I’ve always been looking for you.”
“I’m sorry, Bai, I’m sorry…”
Song Yu pressed his forehead to the back of my hand, apologizing over and over again.
It was the first time I’d ever seen Song Yu so humble–also the first time he’d ever seriously said “I’m sorry” to me.
Before, no matter how far he went, he could always extricate himself cleanly, even putting others at a disadvantage, forcing them to yield.
Now, this look on him truly surprised me.
I smiled and pulled my hand back, my tone indifferent. “Bai? President Song, your Bai died on that night half a year ago.”
Song Yu stared at his empty palm, his gaze frozen, then slowly closed his eyes. His broad shoulders trembled faintly–he looked helpless and desolate.
I turned my head away, exhaled, and continued, “Song Yu, whatever your intentions, I just want you to leave the Chi Family alone this time. I don’t want everyone around me to fall into your hands one by one.”
“Let your schemes and plots end here.”
After hearing my words, Song Yu suddenly laughed.
I looked at him, puzzled. I couldn’t understand what was so funny.
Song Yu lifted his head and looked toward Chi Jin, his tone cold and biting. “Are these the things you said to Bai Yu?”
Chi Jin swallowed hard, but didn’t answer.
Song Yu stood up, took off his glasses with one hand, and fixed a deep, murderous gaze on Chi Jin.
“Chi Jin, do you dare to tell Bai Yu about the grudge between me and your family?”
“Do you dare to tell Bai Yu whether this place is really a Cancer Treatment Center?”
“Do you dare to tell Bai Yu what your true purpose was for bringing Bai Yu to M Country?”
“Do you dare?” Song Yu suddenly roared.
Frightened by Song Yu’s imposing manner, Chi Jin squeezed his eyes shut.
The outburst brought four or five bodyguards rushing in, probably thinking there was a conflict in the room.
Song Yu shouted angrily, “Get out!”
The men turned and hurried out, closing the door behind them.
Song Yu’s barrage of questions left Chi Jin speechless. He just kept swallowing, and I suddenly realized things weren’t as simple as they seemed.
“Chi Jin, what’s going on?” I asked him.
“Bai Yu… this… don’t listen to his nonsense, I…” Chi Jin started, but couldn’t finish.
Song Yu sneered, “Go on, why don’t you keep talking?”
“Chi Jin, didn’t you bring Bai Yu to M Country to use him as your trump card?”
“Saint Riof Cancer Treatment Center?” Song Yu snorted. “This is nothing but a private sanatorium.”
“You threw Bai Yu in here, did you want him to wait for death?”
“I–I didn’t!” Chi Jin explained in a panic, “Bai, believe me, this really is a place for cancer treatment, I…”
“To keep me from finding Bai Yu, and since Bai Yu doesn’t know English, alone in a foreign country, whatever you said was the truth for him. So you hid him here.”
“Are you even human?” Song Yu grabbed Chi Jin by the collar and punched him, sending him flying two meters away.
Chi Jin fell to the floor, clutching his cheek in pain as he struggled to get up. Before he could steady himself, Song Yu kicked him in the stomach, knocking him back two more steps with a crash against the wardrobe.
Seeing Song Yu grab Chi Jin’s collar, ready to strike again, I yelled, “Stop, Song Yu!”
Song Yu slowly lowered his fist and let go.
“Let him talk!” I said, my breath trembling.
Chi Jin leaned against the wardrobe, swaying as he stood, and spat out a mouthful of bloody foam. “Bai, I…”
“Is this really a place to treat cancer?” I asked, holding my breath.
“……”
“Answer me!”
“This…I… but you’ve always been getting treatment, Bai, believe me, Dr. Nalisha really is a cancer doctor.”
“I’m asking you: is this really a place to treat cancer?” My fists clenched the sheet so tightly that blue veins stood out, as if they might burst.
Faced with my persistent questioning, Chi Jin finally lowered his head and spoke the truth. “It isn’t.”
I let out a bitter, mocking laugh. No wonder I’d worked so hard at treatment for half a year, only to get worse so quickly.
“Bai, I know you’re angry, but I never meant to hurt you. All your medicine is for cancer, I never…” Chi Jin rambled desperately, but to me it all seemed like hollow lies.
“You brought me to M Country because you were afraid that if one day you lost the upper hand, you could use me to bargain with Song Yu. That was your real purpose, wasn’t it?”
“So you were laying this trap from the very beginning, weren’t you?”
“Bai, listen to me, I didn’t, I just…”
I clutched at my aching heart and closed my eyes. “Go. I don’t want to hear another word from you.”
“Bai, I’m sorry, I really…”
“Go! I don’t want to see you again!” I couldn’t hold back my tears anymore–they fell, one after another.
Why did even the last person I trusted have to use me, hurt me–why?
Why do I always lose the ones who truly care for me?
What did I do wrong, for fate to treat me this way?
Why?
Endless despair and sorrow threatened to swallow me whole. My vision went black, and I fainted…
