- Chapter 53 - Pre-Danger and Imprisonment Warning
After returning to the ward, Lu lifted me onto the hospital bed. Seeing that I remained silent, he thought he had upset me by misspeaking in front of the nurse earlier. Sitting on the chair like a child who had done something wrong, he apologized to me, “Bai Yu, don’t be mad. I just…”
“Lu!” I interrupted him, staring intently into his eyes.
Lu paused for a moment, his pure eyes also deeply gazing back at me. I could see him swallow slightly, and his fists gradually tightening at his sides.
I knew he was nervous.
With my hand that wasn’t hooked up to the IV, I gently touched the back of his hand and whispered, “Lu, do you think I will get fat if we open a cake shop in the future?”
Lu was momentarily stunned, then excitedly clasped my hand, laughing, “Getting fat is good. Then you’ll be so unattractive no one else will want you, and you’ll have to stay by my side.”
I snorted with feigned disgust, “Dream on. If I get fat, then all the clothes in my wardrobe will end up being yours.”
Lu quickly waved his hands to explain, his desire to survive very strong, “No, no, no, I’ll buy you new ones. I’ll wear whatever is left.”
I smiled contentedly, “Hmm… that’s more like it.”
Then we both burst into hearty laughter.
At that moment, my lead surgeon entered to check on my postoperative status, advising me to eat more fruits, vegetables, and liquid food. He also prescribed several boxes of anti-inflammatory and heat-clearing suppositories, emphasizing the importance of avoiding strenuous activities to prevent the surgical stitches from rupturing, which could lead to severe bleeding and pain.
Lu listened more attentively than I did, nodding in agreement, warming my heart even further and solidifying my resolve to stay with him.
After the doctor left, I turned to Lu and gratefully said, “Lu, thank you. I always end up dragging you into this.”
Although Lu and I were about the same age, he was always the one giving more, while I indulged like a spoiled child in his tender care.
Thinking about it, if Lu didn’t truly love me from the bottom of his heart, how could he be so unreservedly good to me?
It was just that I had been too blind to see it.
Lu got up and sat beside my bed, looking earnestly at me, “Bai Yu, you don’t have to say sorry or thank you to me.”
“I love you, I want to take care of you, and I’m happy to do these things. If possible, I want to do this for a lifetime.”
I must admit, hearing Lu say these words made my heart flutter for the first time in a long while.
Perhaps when one is vulnerable, they need warmth the most, and Lu was like a beam of light tearing through the darkness of my world, rescuing me from the abyss that bound me.
Thankfully, it’s not too late.
The day after the surgery, I seized the moment when Lu went out to buy lunch to call Song Yu.
Since I had decided to leave Hai City with Lu, it was necessary to settle things with Song Yu.
Song Yu answered the phone quickly, “Hello.”
The moment I heard his voice, my throat tightened involuntarily, but I forced myself to stay calm.
After taking a few deep breaths, I spoke firmly, “President Song, I can’t go to the company anymore.”
“Hmm, I’ve already asked Lisa to give you a week’s leave. You should rest well at home these days.”
I knew Song Yu hadn’t grasped my meaning, so I explained again, “I mean I won’t be going to Huanya ever again.”
There was a dead silence on the other end, only the sound of air flowing could be heard.
I bit my lower lip and continued, “President Song, I’m sorry, but I can’t be your personal public relations anymore.”
“Because of Chi Jin?” he asked.
“No,” I quickly denied, “I want to leave Hai City, it has nothing to do with him.”
After hesitating for a moment, I decided to pour out my heart.
“President Song, thank you for your care these days and for teaching me so much. I’m grateful, but I can’t continue working for you.”
“I once thought I only liked money and made earning it my goal. However, when I truly had money, I realized it didn’t make me happier; instead, it made me miss what I should cherish the most.”
“After going through so much, I understand that what is meant to be mine will always be mine, no matter when. What isn’t meant to be mine, even if I break my head over it, won’t return even a fraction.”
“I won’t take the apartment. The key has always been in the drawer of my office desk. Now, I just want to be an ordinary person, not get involved in a world that doesn’t belong to me. I hope you won’t use Wang Li’an’s matter to threaten me anymore.”
“Let me go, let me leave.”
I had thought about these words all night, and now that I said them, I felt much lighter.
After another long silence, Song Yu finally spoke, “I agree.”
I didn’t expect Song Yu to agree so easily. I thought he would ask if I had thought it through, or offer me choices that weren’t really choices.
Now, with him letting me go so straightforwardly, I was at a loss for words.
“But Bai Yu, I once warned you, you can leave me, but if you want to come back, it won’t be easy. I think you understand what I mean.” Song Yu’s voice wasn’t loud, but it made my heart tremble.
But I had already decided to leave Hai City with Lu. As long as he didn’t use Wang Li’an’s matter to coerce me, I would never go back to him.
“There won’t be such a day,” I said confidently.
Song Yu chuckled on the other end and hung up without saying anything else.
Even though I couldn’t see his face, I could guess his expression now-the feeling that no matter what you do, you’re under his control, was simply unbearable.
Just then, Lu pushed the door open and came in, carrying lunch and a bunch of fruits.
“I saw the fruits at the supermarket were fresh, so I bought some. Sorry for being late, are you hungry?” Lu said as he unloaded the fruits and porridge onto the bedside table.
I shook my head and smiled, “Not hungry.”
Lu stirred the porridge with a spoon, letting most of the heat dissipate before handing it to me.
After I took it, Lu started peeling an apple for me, saying as he peeled, “Bai Yu, the doctor said you can be discharged in seven days.”
I nodded while drinking the porridge.
“I’ve booked a ticket to go back home on the eighth day,” Lu said again.
I looked up at him, surprised. “So soon?”
Lu chuckled, “Yeah, I told my parents about you, and they really want to meet you.”
My eyes widened in disbelief. “You told your parents… you found a boyfriend?”
Lu shrugged casually, “Yep.”
“And they’re not upset?”
“I’ve been independent for years, doing things my own way. As long as I send money home regularly, they don’t care whether my partner is male or female. So you don’t need to worry about them accepting you.”
I nodded thoughtfully, then suddenly realized, “Wait, didn’t you say your parents were like mine, and kicked you out because you’re homosexual?”
Lu’s face froze for a moment, then turned red and pale.
I immediately understood and stared at him, “Oh, Fan Lu, you lied to me! Your parents didn’t mind you being homosexual, did they?”
Lu’s expression darted around, and he stammered, “I just wanted us to have shared experiences, to make it easier to be friends.”
I rolled my eyes, catching the underlying meaning. “Oh, so you liked me from the start?”
Lu hesitated, then nodded, quickly explaining, “Bai Yu, I didn’t mean to deceive you. I know you don’t like those people in the circle, so I pretended to have similar experiences to get close to you, to stay by your side.”
“But I had no ill intentions. I simply like you and want to be your support.”
Seeing Lu’s nervous demeanor, I couldn’t resist teasing him, “Fan Lu, you’re quite the strategist!”
Lu panicked, waving his hands frantically, “No, Bai Yu, listen, I didn’t mean it, I just…”
“Hahaha…” I couldn’t help but burst into laughter at his flustered state.
Lu stared at me, bewildered.
“Who said I was angry?” I laughed so hard tears almost came out.
After a few moments of calm, I took his hand and said, “Lu, thank you. Thank you for always being by my side.”
Lu squeezed my hand back, saying sincerely, “Thank you too, Bai Yu, for giving me the chance to take care of you.”
“So… will you come back with me?” Lu asked cautiously.
I nodded with a smile.
Lu immediately beamed, eager to say, “Great! I’ll cancel our apartment in the next couple of days, pack everything up, and we’ll fly out the day you leave the hospital.”
“Okay!” I replied with a smile.
In the following days, Lu was like both a parent and a boyfriend, taking care of me meticulously. I recovered well, without any setbacks, and even the nurses praised Lu’s attentiveness.
I couldn’t help but feel more hopeful about our future, imagining a harmonious life together.
The night before leaving the hospital, while other patients’ families unfolded their beds, Lu remained dressed neatly, not moving.
I asked curiously, “Lu, are you going out later?”
Lu nodded, putting on a baseball cap. “Zhang Chenyang and the others heard I’m leaving and are throwing a farewell party. I’ll just make an appearance, won’t drink, and be back soon.”
Lu had been by my side in the hospital, only leaving briefly to buy meals. So when he mentioned going out for dinner with friends, I agreed without hesitation, reminding him not to rush back.
Lu dismissed my concern, saying, “They’re not as important as my wife. I’ll be back soon.”
I laughed and said, “Alright.”
