- Chapter 50 - Devoured to the Bone, Lonely One Heads to the Hospital for Surgery
I stared blankly at Chi Jin, who smiled warmly at me and said, “How come you’re so careless? Just a moment without me and you trip.”
Feeling guilty, I forced a smile and glanced sideways at Song Yu.
Luckily, he seemed indifferent, not casting any threatening looks my way, and instead turned to enter the hotpot restaurant.
Seeing Song Yu leave, Chi Jin dropped his facade and spoke to me sincerely, “What happened? Did Song Yu threaten you again?”
I hesitated and shook my head, “…No.”
Chi Jin didn’t believe my words and said urgently, “Bai Yu, if you’re in trouble, you can tell me. I’ll definitely help you.”
I knew Chi Jin wasn’t just saying empty words to comfort me, nor was he offering help out of pity. He wanted to use me to unsettle Song Yu.
I had no desire to get involved in their conflict, and besides, I couldn’t leave Song Yu right now. Getting closer to Chi Jin would only make my situation more difficult.
Tonight was a painful lesson.
“I said, no! Song Yu didn’t do anything.” My tone was anxious, and my expression was somewhat agitated.
Chi Jin was taken aback by my outburst, studying me as if pondering what could have caused such a change in me in just over an hour.
Feeling guilty under his gaze, I coughed lightly to mask my emotions and said, “It’s too cold outside. Let’s go back in.” With that, I forced myself to endure the knife-like pain below and slowly made my way to the hotpot restaurant.
Chi Jin didn’t say anything more and followed me back inside.
Though the distance from the entrance to the private room was only a few minutes, I was drenched in cold sweat, my muscles tense on either side of my hips. Each step felt like it was pulling at my intestines, leaving me swollen and in pain.
Despite this, I tried to keep my composure, not wanting anyone to see my distress, especially not Nian Hua.
As I pushed open the door to the private room, Nian Hua was resting her chin on her hand, chatting admiringly with Song Yu.
Seeing me, she quickly stood up and greeted me with a smile, “Assistant Bai, sit over here.”
Looking at the hard wooden chair, my pain intensified. If I sat down, I’d be half-dead.
“Oh, I won’t be joining. I just remembered I have something to do. I can’t stay for dinner today. Let’s meet another day.” I made up a lie, eager to leave.
I knew Song Yu had me return not for the meal, but to dispel Nian Hua’s doubts. Now that I’d shown up, whether I ate or not was irrelevant.
Hearing my excuse, Nian Hua’s face showed concern, “It’s late; can’t it wait until tomorrow? It’ll be a waste not to eat all this food.”
At that moment, Chi Jin entered, wrapping an arm around my shoulder and saying to Nian Hua, “I said there’s something to do. If you want to eat, I’ll host next time. Pick any restaurant in Hai City. Today won’t work.”
Clearly, Chi Jin was still putting on a show of deep affection for me in front of Song Yu, unaware that I’d already confessed everything under Song Yu’s oppressive influence.
I instinctively glanced at Song Yu at the table. His face bore a detached, indifferent smile, seemingly unfazed by the closeness between Chi Jin and me, as if the man who had gone berserk in the car earlier wasn’t him at all.
Song Yu is incredibly adept at masking his true self.
If I hadn’t repeatedly witnessed his hidden side, I wouldn’t have believed that the seemingly refined and elegant boss of the group could be such a sinister and terrifying demon.
It’s truly frightening.
I feel like I no longer know Song Yu at all, and I can’t fathom what he’s thinking. Whatever he does or says, it’s never random or aimless. On the contrary, his goals are clear, and he’s meticulously plotting to achieve them.
Although I don’t know exactly what he’s planning, one thing is certain: whatever he’s up to is definitely intertwined with money and power.
If that’s the case, I can’t understand why Song Yu, who already has so much wealth, would still desperately chase after these things.
What exactly does he want?
Seeing Chi Jin’s firm stance, Nian Hua awkwardly pulled at the corners of her mouth and didn’t insist further.
Song Yu, on the other hand, was completely composed, casually letting us leave.
Given Song Yu’s temperament, the fact that he could remain so calm and let us go without even asking suggests he’s confident that nothing would happen between Chi Jin and me.
I suddenly realized why Song Yu had been tormenting me so relentlessly in the car earlier. He deliberately consumed me entirely, leaving nothing for Chi Jin.
Punishment was one aspect, prevention was another.
I couldn’t help but scoff internally. Song Yu really thought of everything, leaving no opportunity for his opponent.
Outside the hotpot restaurant, Chi Jin offered me a ride, but I refused.
He looked at me inexplicably, “Bai Yu, tell me the truth, are you hiding something from me?”
My backside was aching and wet, with a faint sensation of something flowing down, leaving me in no mood to deal with Chi Jin’s questions.
“No, nothing at all. I’m leaving now, thank you for tonight.” Shielding my head with my hand against the drizzling rain, I endured the searing pain around my tailbone and quickly headed to the roadside, hoping to catch a taxi to the hospital.
Chi Jin caught up with me, frowning deeply, “Where are you going? I’ll take you.”
I kept my eyes fixed on the taxis speeding by on the road, hastily dismissing him, “No need, I can manage on my own.”
Chi Jin forcefully turned my shoulders, making me face him as he growled, “What kind of spell has Song Yu cast on you all, making everyone listen to him like this?”
“It’s the same in M Country, and here in Z Country too. What’s wrong with you all? Why are you all siding with Song Yu?”
I don’t know what kind of spell Song Yu cast, but I do know that something is currently trickling down between my legs.
“Please stop asking me, I know nothing. I’m just an employee, and I don’t want to get involved in the matters between you and Song Yu. Please, Mr. Chi, spare me.”
“Today, my mind wasn’t clear, and I offended you. I’m sorry, I’m sorry…” I clasped my hands together, pleading desperately with him.
At that moment, a taxi with its “available” sign lit up approached. Before Chi Jin could say anything, I broke free from his grip and frantically waved at the taxi.
The driver noticed my gesture, flashed his headlights twice, and drove over, stopping right in front of me in the blink of an eye.
I jumped off the curb, not even sparing a goodbye for Chi Jin, and slipped into the taxi, speeding away.
The driver asked where to, and I, barely daring to sit back in the seat, hissed and gasped out the address for Hai University Hospital.
Suddenly, I felt something as if it had completely squeezed out from behind, dragging my insides down with it.
A foreboding sense of dread washed over me, and I urged the driver to hurry. Seeing my pale face, he feared something might happen in his car, so he floored the gas pedal, weaving through traffic, and soon we arrived at Hai University Hospital.
I tossed a hundred-yuan bill to the driver, not even waiting for change, and hurried out of the car.
The sensation of heaviness in my lower abdomen grew stronger, and liquid was trickling down my legs like a stream-undoubtedly blood.
Once inside the hospital lobby, I quickly registered for an emergency appointment.
Even at night, the emergency room at Hai University Hospital was bustling with people-adults, children, young and old, all sorts of patients filled the two emergency rooms.
By now, the cramping in my lower abdomen had surpassed the pain from behind, twisting my entire abdominal cavity into knots, forcing me to hunch over, unable to stand straight.
A little girl in front of me tugged at her mother’s clothes, pointing at me with a sweet voice, “Mommy, that uncle is dressed so beautifully, like a prince from a fairy tale.”
The young woman glanced back at me, smiled, and told the girl that I was wearing an elf prince costume from a movie. Then, noticing something was off about me, she bent down and asked, “Sir, are you okay?”
I struggled to lift my head, grimacing in pain, “…I’m fine.”
But I was already struggling to stay upright, my body swaying slightly, and large beads of sweat rolling down my forehead.
Seeing my condition, the young woman looked at the long line ahead, hesitated, and then led the little girl into the emergency room.
A few minutes later, the woman returned with a nurse in a white coat. She pointed in my direction, seemingly explaining something to the nurse.
The nurse looked at me for a few seconds and then followed the woman over.
I was hunched over, gasping for air, my entire lower abdomen and tailbone area throbbing with pain, indistinguishable from each other.
The young woman patted my shoulder, concerned, “Sir, you don’t look well. I’ve called a nurse for you.”
I slowly lifted my head, seeing the worry in her eyes, feeling both warmth and bitterness in my heart.
Song Yu had left me in this state, and yet it was a stranger who called a doctor for me at the hospital.
How ironic.
The nurse saw me clutching my stomach, my face ashen, and didn’t delay any further. She supported me as we headed to the examination room.
I sincerely thanked the woman and followed the nurse away.
Inside the emergency room, a male doctor was typing at a computer while addressing a patient groaning in pain beside him, “I suspect your pain is due to kidney stones. Go get an ultrasound and come back.”
The man took the form and left the room with his wife.
When it was my turn, I was barely able to stand, feeling alternately hot and cold. If not for the nurse’s support, I might have collapsed at any moment.
The doctor frowned at me and asked, “What’s wrong? Where does it hurt?”
I glanced at the female nurse beside me, feeling a bit embarrassed, “Doctor, I… I… my backside hurts…”
