After I Was Gone, Mr. Song Said He Loved Me - Chapter 22 - I'm Interested in You
When I mentioned someone I didn’t want to lose, I was referring to family. But Song Yu’s answer was clearly about a lover.
“Is that person… Nian Hua?” I asked tentatively.
Song Yu chuckled, not avoiding the question. “Yes!”
Even though I had long suspected that Song Yu and Nian Hua had an unusual relationship, hearing him admit it made my chest feel inexplicably tight. Maybe it was just the long ride.
I adjusted my position, lying flat on the seat, and casually asked, “Why did he leave you?”
Could it really be like President Wu and the others said, that Nian Hua left because Song Yu was too poor back then and ran off with a rich heir?
“Because at that time, I was a poor kid who needed financial aid for tuition,” Song Yu laughed at himself. “His choice was right.”
“And now?” I couldn’t help but ask.
I didn’t know why I was so interested in Song Yu’s affairs, but I just wanted to know how he viewed Nian Hua now.
Song Yu glanced at me, “You seem very interested in his story?”
“I’m interested in-” I stopped halfway, realizing how impulsive I was, almost blurting out “I’m interested in you.”
“Interested in what?”
I bit my lip, refusing to admit it. I didn’t want Song Yu to think I was overly concerned about his affairs.
“If not him, then it’s me?” Song Yu asked with a smile.
My heart skipped a beat, and for a moment, I forgot to refute.
I had to admit, Song Yu really attracted me. It wasn’t just his looks and physique, but also the calm and steady aura he exuded, full of mature masculine charm.
The more time I spent with him, the easier it was to fall deeper.
To be honest, men liking men often comes down to certain gay individuals lacking some unique masculine traits.
Like me, I’m not effeminate, but I’m not particularly masculine either, probably because I’m still young.
My vision is shallow, and I love vanity, making my pursuit of money boundless.
Without limits, naturally, there are no boundaries.
I knew this.
So I never dared or thought I could have any connection with someone like Song Yu.
He sleeps with me, I take the money, it’s fine.
At least the face above me is impeccably handsome.
While I was lost in thought, Song Yu suddenly said, “Bai Yu, I don’t want you to become the third personal public relations I’ve dismissed.”
“I hope you understand what I mean.”
Song Yu’s tone was light, as if discussing something trivial, but to me, it felt like a slap across my face.
Hot and painful.
I didn’t rush to argue or say anything defiant because I knew my insignificant little thoughts were worthless in front of Song Yu.
Better to be honest, to clearly recognize the vast gap between us.
“I understand, President Song.”
Song Yu didn’t continue the topic but suggested I sleep for a while.
I gazed out the window at the setting sun, my mind replaying Song Yu’s words.
Ultimately, in his eyes, I’m just a dispensable existence. Even if my body still bears the marks of his frenzy last night, it holds no weight. Without me, he’d find a fourth, a fifth, countless others…
I just wonder if he’d possess others as intensely as he does me…
…
Ding-
A sudden phone ring startled me awake from my drowsy state.
I opened my eyes; it was already dark. I had unknowingly fallen asleep.
The phone was still ringing. I snapped back to reality and saw it was my sister, Bai Fei.
Instantly, my sleepiness vanished, and I answered with trembling hands.
“Hello? Fei?”
“Brother, where are you? Grandpa’s not doing well. I called you secretly while Dad’s away.”
“Brother, please come back…” Bai Fei started crying.
My heart twisted with urgency, and I turned to Song Yu. “President Song, how much longer until we arrive?”
“One more hour,” Song Yu said, accelerating the car.
“I’ll be there in an hour, Fei. Which hospital is Grandpa in?”
“Grandpa’s at home in Yu County, not hospitalized,” Fei said between sobs.
I was stunned, almost shouting, “Grandpa’s sick, why isn’t he hospitalized? Why didn’t you tell me earlier?”
Fei was only fourteen, and my yelling made her cry harder. I felt terrible, wondering why I was taking out my frustration on a child.
“Fei, I’m sor-”
Beep-
Before I could apologize, Fei hung up, and no one answered when I called back.
I leaned back in my seat, sighing deeply, feeling utterly useless, unable to do anything.
Grandpa’s sick, and I can’t be there to care for him. Now he’s critically ill, and I can’t arrive immediately.
Tears welled up again.
“Was that a call from home?” Song Yu asked.
I nodded, sniffling.
Song Yu ruffled my hair, comforting me, “Don’t be sad. Pull yourself together; there’s a lot to do when you arrive.”
I bowed my head, wiping tears secretly. “President Song, am I really useless?”
“Why do you say that?”
I sniffled, tears streaming down. “Nothing, just feeling like I’ve lived this long with no education, no skills, always looked down upon.”
“I feel like I’m a mess.” The more I spoke, the more self-conscious I became, tears flowing uncontrollably.
Suddenly, I was pulled into Song Yu’s embrace.
My mind went blank for a few seconds. It was the first time Song Yu had shown any intimacy outside the bedroom.
Though the position wasn’t comfortable, I felt incredibly secure, as if all worries and unhappiness were kept at bay by those strong arms.
Song Yu rubbed my back, his voice unusually gentle, “Don’t overthink. Everyone has their own value. You’re only 20; the future holds endless possibilities.”
“I know you’re trying to comfort me. You must have been excellent at 20, unlike me…” I lowered my head, feeling more and more inferior.
“If I were truly excellent, I wouldn’t have lost the one I most…” Song Yu suddenly paused, not finishing his sentence.
But I already knew what he meant-probably losing the one he loved most.
Clearly, Nian Hua was very important to Song Yu, so much so that even after being hurt, he still couldn’t forget.
Thinking of this, I fell silent…
