A Strange Transmigration Novel - Chapter 8
Chapter 8
My head was buzzing.
The System was also having a breakdown.
It said, “The plot has already turned into this mess. Whatever.”
We’d cross that bridge when we sank under it.
I was completely unable to sleep, staring wide-eyed until dawn.
At ten o’clock, Shi Xu’s product launch began, and he trended on social media once again.
Sporting a pair of dark circles under my eyes, I entered the livestream.
As he introduced the product, his articulation was clear, but his speaking speed was a bit on the fast side.
He looked like he was in a desperate hurry.
The bullet comments said: [Can we even watch livestreams at double speed now?]
[Did President Shi borrow that mouth? Is he in a rush to return it?]
Shi Xu paused for a moment and then slowed down his pace.
The number of viewers in the livestream continued to climb.
During Shi Xu’s presentation, everyone was as excited as monkeys who had just spotted a bunch of bananas.
[I want to customize a robot of my favorite idol!]
As the last syllable fell, Shi Xu yielded center stage to the others and promptly left the venue.
It looked like he really was in a rush.
I caught up on some sleep and then got up to catch a flight.
I wasn’t going to shed a tear until I saw Shi Xu.
As a free-spirited travel blogger, it was perfectly reasonable for my IP location to change every day.
While Shi Xu was inspecting a branch office in Jiangsu, I had already flown to Anhui.
When he rushed non-stop to Hefei, I was already in Henan.
He chased, and I fled.
We ran through eighteen provinces, single-handedly boosting the growth of the tourism economy.
By the time Shi Xu finally caught me, I was in a guesthouse stuffing my face with satsuma mandarins.
Shi Xu stood outside the courtyard, gazing at me.
My breath hitched for a second as I whispered to the System, “Break out that trash script of yours and let me have a look.”
I had never acted out a ‘reunion after a long separation’ scene before; I didn’t know what to say.
In my mind, a hazy narration sounded: “Shi Xu never expected to encounter Sang Ting here. She was smiling brightly while leaning on another man’s arm, not sparing him even a single glance…”
Me: “…”
Where did this second male lead come from? How come I didn’t know about this?
I took a deep breath.
The System really was unreliable.
After more than a year, Shi Xu and I met again.
He had become much more haggard; his face was pale, and his eyes were bloodshot.
He used to love slacking off at work and had never looked this exhausted before.
Maybe it was because he’d been traveling too hard lately.
I said, “Have you ever heard of a term? ‘Exhaustion-ugly.'”
He was briefly amused by my words, letting out a small laugh.
It was a rather forced smile.
I sighed. “You didn’t come at the right time.”
He became visibly tense, the veins on the back of his hands bulging slightly.
While peeling a mandarin, I said, “If you’d come a few months earlier, you could have eaten Gannan navel oranges. Now the oranges are all gone. You’ve made a trip for nothing.”
He said, “It wasn’t for nothing. I came to find you.”
My heart skipped a beat.
I was starting to ship the two of us a little bit.
When people are flustered, they pretend to be busy.
I stuffed a mandarin segment into my mouth and placed an unpeeled one into Shi Xu’s hand.
What was I supposed to say? The System hadn’t taught me this.
I sat on a lounge chair in the yard, awkwardly peeling mandarins.
Shi Xu stood in the courtyard, silently peeling mandarins.
After my hands were stained yellow from the fruit, I finally thought of something to say: “But… I’m just a body double.”
