A Mom at Twenty: My Son Is from Five Years in the Future - Chapter 2
“Break. Up. With. Her!”
“Let her think she’s lost her rich catch. Then get another rich guy from our circle to ask her out.”
“If Fang Zhiyou says yes, that’ll prove she was only after the money and never cared about you. A gold digger, no question.”
Someone immediately chimed in. “Perfect! Whoever draws dare next has to ask the gold digger out!”
God, I was tired.
It felt like working my ass off on a street corner, then finding out I’d been paid in counterfeit bills.
My guilty conscience snapped off and died right there.
Still, this was useful. At least the fox had finally shown his tail.
I could only imagine how satisfying it would be to take all this evidence to Grandpa, give him a complicated look, and say, “You really are desperate, aren’t you?”
Fate gave me another shove: the person who drew dare was Wen Yi.
My second prospective husband made his grand entrance.
So I agreed to Shen Shu’s breakup without a moment’s hesitation. Then, when Wen Yi came to confess on a dare, I shyly accepted.
Everyone in their circle was thrilled to have a show to watch. They knew the inside story better than anyone.
Wen Yi had a childhood sweetheart who’d been born frail and had a heart condition.
She was the live-in housekeeper’s daughter, but she’d grown up much like a pampered young heiress.
You couldn’t upset her. You couldn’t scold her. She needed constant coaxing, or she’d faint at the slightest provocation and require a blood transfusion.
Wen Yi complained about her, then indulged her in everything.
The buyer who complains is the buyer who cares.
Anyone with eyes could see he had feelings for her. He was simply the last person to realize it.
I tugged my lips into a speechless smile.
Oh, please. How deep could the feelings of a man who casually asked women out for a game possibly run?
Once I became Wen Yi’s new girlfriend, his childhood sweetheart found herself in an awkward position.
Whenever he was around, she deliberately made herself small, putting on a pitiful show of injured resignation.
She’d paid good money to investigate the identity I’d fabricated. She knew perfectly well that I was supposedly an ordinary student from a poor family.
Even so, she waited on me with exaggerated deference, as though I were the young mistress of the house.
She kept saying the Wen family and Wen Yi had spoiled her in the past, but now she had to remember her true status and know her place.
She degraded herself on purpose so Wen Yi would feel sorry for her.
And I, her scene partner?
Naturally, I gave it my all.
How could a kindhearted person like me fail to lend a hand to their epic, agonizing love story?
In the three short months I dated Wen Yi, his childhood sweetheart injured herself three times and fainted eight.
She’d practically warmed that cold emergency-room bed into a heated platform.
Blamed for all of it, I faced Wen Yi’s reproaches and disgust every day.
But I was happy.
While I dated Shen Shu, his performance of devotion made my sudden return to poverty remarkably comfortable.
While I dated Wen Yi, I had a scheming little maid at my beck and call.
Not much different from life as the richest family’s daughter, really.
Their friends laughed until they clutched their stomachs. They said I’d thrown away a watermelon to pick up a sesame seed.
However unfaithful Shen Shu might ordinarily be, he was generous while dating. He’d even made a special exception and kept his hands clean for me.
As for Wen Yi, he’d known what kind of woman I was from the start. He tolerated me only out of what they called the spirit of the game.
He couldn’t wait to kick me aside when the time was up, then repay me tenfold, a hundredfold, for everything his childhood sweetheart had suffered.
Hahaha. They’d picked the wrong person to kick.
I was no delicate little charity case.
