Chapter 10
Chapter 10
Shen Jincheng flared up in humiliation. “Scold me all you want, but why bring Yuqing into this? She’s just an abandoned baby!”
I cut him off coldly. “Abandoned? Are you sure about that?”
I continued at an unhurried pace. “On May 10, 1988-exactly three months ago-I found this child at our doorstep.”
“Inside the bamboo basket with the baby were a few diapers and a note. The note was left by the child’s mother; the handwriting was intentionally messy. It said her husband’s family favored boys over girls and that her two previous daughters had been drowned. She said she couldn’t bear to let this one go.”
“She claimed she’d heard that in this alleyway, Teacher Shen was the most educated and Sister Xu was the most kind-hearted. She begged us to take in this poor child.”
“Shen Jincheng, you took the baby to report it to the police back then, but you came back with her a short while later. You said the police suggested we raise her for the time being, in case the biological mother regretted it and came back for her in a few days.”
And then, in my previous life, I raised her for twenty-seven years.
I walked over and picked up the infant from the bed. “Bai Hezhi took two months off before the college entrance exam. What was she doing? And why on earth did you give her so much money, Shen Jincheng? It’s because this child belongs to Bai Hezhi!”
I suddenly grabbed Bai Hezhi’s arm. “Let’s go. We’re going to the hospital right now for a blood test.”
Bai Hezhi sobbed so hard she could barely breathe, struggling to break free. “I’m not going! Teacher Shen-Jincheng, save me!”
Shen Jincheng shoved me away. “Stop this madness! If you don’t want to raise an abandoned child, just say so. There’s no need to slander Xiao Bai!”
I held the baby up with both hands. “If she’s not Bai Hezhi’s, then I might as well drop her and let her die.”
“No!” Bai Hezhi rushed forward, snatching the baby away.
See?
There was no need for a blood test at the hospital anymore. Her maternal instinct had already said everything that needed to be said.
Realizing her actions had completely exposed her, Bai Hezhi’s body slumped. She cradled the child in silence, doing nothing but weeping.
Shen Jincheng crouched on the floor, burying his hands in his hair.
Silence fell over the room once more.
After a long time, Shen Jincheng spoke. “Chunyan, what exactly do you want?”
What did I want?
I took a deep breath. “First, a divorce. Second, I want Bai Hezhi’s university admission notice.”
