A Gilded Cage of Love - Chapter 3
Jiang Qin gave us the master bedroom.
He himself moved into Niannian’s children’s room.
“So many rooms to choose from, yet you pick the kid’s room. Childish.”
“It is childish,” he said, tossing a peeled shrimp into my bowl, “but sleeping in Niannian’s room, I wake up and immediately remember I have a son. That makes me happy.”
I was about to deny it when I heard Niannian quietly ask, “Mommy, is Uncle really my dad?”
The words I was about to say got stuck in my throat.
Since Niannian was little, I’d always told him that his dad was busy with work and didn’t have time for us, but that he loved us very much.
No matter what, Jiang Qin is Niannian’s biological father.
If one day Niannian grows up and wants to acknowledge his father…
I can’t take that right away from him.
I can’t keep insisting Jiang Qin isn’t his dad just because I’m angry.
Jiang Qin stared at me, his long, narrow phoenix eyes full of hope.
But when I didn’t speak, that light in his eyes dimmed again.
Why so dejected?
Back then, he was the one who gave me the signal that we couldn’t go on.
I never wanted to make things difficult for him.
The next day, Jiang Qin wasn’t around.
I was about to go out for a walk and check my chances of running away.
But Aunt Zhang blocked me with a cheerful smile.
“Miss Ruan, you really came back! I thought the boss was lying to me.
“Didn’t expect the child to be so big already. Looks exactly like Jiang Zong when he was little.”
Me: “…”
At noon, Aunt Zhang cooked for us.
Niannian ate happily, giving the highest praise: “Aunt Zhang’s cooking is so yummy, Mommy, it’s just as good as the food at our kindergarten cafeteria.”
My mouth twitched.
Aunt Zhang is a Cantonese chef who earns tens of thousands per hour.
Please don’t let her hear that.
Back when my stomach was bad, I ate Aunt Zhang’s food the most, so Jiang Qin paid a fortune to bring her home.
Now that I’m back, she’s working here again.
Jiang Qin didn’t return until late at night.
After having a child,
I developed a habit of light sleep.
So when the bedroom door opened, I heard it instantly.
Damn!
Forgot to lock the door.
I held my breath and pretended to sleep, feeling him quietly stand by Niannian’s side for a while, then move to mine.
He didn’t leave for a long time.
Suddenly, Jiang Qin crouched down.
His hot breath, mixed with the smell of alcohol, drew near.
He leaned in close, pressing a kiss to my lips.
Furious, I opened my eyes and raised my hand to hit him-
But Jiang Qin caught me in an instant.
His dry palm interlaced with my fingers.
My eyes adjusted to the darkness. He chuckled softly and kissed the corner of my lips: “Not pretending to sleep anymore? Don’t wake Niannian.”
He kissed me a few more times after speaking.
I didn’t dare struggle too hard, gritting my teeth: “You’re drunk, you smell awful!”
Jiang Qin used to be cold and dignified.
He’d never sat so casually on the floor, rubbing my hand against his stubble.
“Mm… When are you going to tell Niannian I’m his dad?”
“You’re not.”
“Stubborn even now. You can drag it out for a while, but not forever.”
I was truly angry: “Aren’t you afraid your wife will find out?”
“I’m not married… You really left for good, never cared about me.”
I froze.
But the day I left was his fiancée’s grandfather’s birthday banquet.
I changed my words: “Your fiancée…”
“I don’t have a fiancée.”
“How is that possible, you…”
Jiang Qin looked at me, his eyes full of tender affection, hard to tell if he was drunk or sober: “I only have you.”
The bed moved.
But Jiang Qin didn’t.
I followed Jiang Qin’s gaze.
Turning quietly, I saw a small figure wrapped in his little blanket, slowly scooting away.
The air went silent.
Niannian noticed too.
He turned his head, saw both Jiang Qin and me staring at him, and sighed helplessly.
“Mommy, I’ll go sleep in my own room.
“I don’t want to be part of your play.”
Me: “…”
Jiang Qin held my hand and burst out laughing.
He laughed so hard his chest shook.
