Summary
During the tea ceremony at our wedding, Yan Mingjin’s female bro, Chu Ying, suddenly rushed up from the groomsmen’s table.
She planted herself beside his father and crooked a finger at me.
“Come serve me tea, daughter-in-law.”
The guests roared with laughter.
Without a trace of embarrassment, she put a video from the night before on the big screen.
In it, she was straddling Mingjin’s lap, making him call her Dad.
Once he did, she asked, “What if your wife won’t call me that too?”
He lowered his head to light a cigarette, his smile certain.
“She wouldn’t dare refuse. She loves me too much to embarrass me at our wedding.”
When the video ended, Chu Ying reached out to pat my head.
“Be a good daughter-in-law. Let’s hear you say it.”
I didn’t move.
So Mingjin picked up the tea himself and brought it over.
“Chu Ying’s been by my side for twenty years. If you’re marrying me, you need to respect her.”
When she’d snatched my wedding ring, he’d said she’d been with him longer.
When she’d deleted our photos together, he’d said she was just feeling insecure.
When she’d left a hickey on his neck, he’d said he couldn’t let me come between him and his bro of twenty years.
Now he was holding those same twenty years over me again.
He leaned down and kissed my forehead.
“Kneel just once, and I’ll love you for the rest of your life. That’s a good deal.”
Looking at him, I suddenly found the calculation very simple.
I wouldn’t make that trade.
