Summary
At the flower banquet, the Empress had a magnificent Yao Yellow peony hidden in the garden.
Whoever found it first, she announced, would become the Crown Princess.
The noble young ladies rose to search.
I made a show of looking too—and happened to see the Cui family’s legitimate daughter find the flower, then kick it beneath my seat.
Alarm jolted through me.
I hurried back, picked up the peony in secret, and tucked it into my sleeve.
Everyone wanted to be Crown Princess.
I, however, said nothing.
I would wait until the banquet ended, then dispose of the evidence.
I glanced at the Cui girl, who kept looking my way.
She had lived in the capital all her life.
Surely she knew far more than I did.
If she didn’t want him, how good could he possibly be?
