Chapter 4
The butler couldn’t understand how his young master, who had a fractured lower leg and a concussion, had managed those few minutes of frantic energy and babbling.
Neither could I. Maybe a spirit had possessed me. I didn’t even remember passing out afterward.
To thank An Yu for saving me, the butler offered him a large sum of money.
An Yu refused.
In the end, the butler paid four years of tuition and the fees for a double dorm room.
Only when he heard it was my idea did An Yu stop objecting.
A University had three kinds of dorm rooms: singles, doubles, and quads.
Why not a single, you ask?
The closer you are to the moon, the sooner you get it. I needed to bond with my darling wife until he couldn’t live without me.
After half a day recuperating in the ward, I decided I couldn’t just sit around.
A wife belonged in your arms as early as possible.
During those daytime moments when I regained a little common sense, I cursed myself for being such a hopeless sucker.
Practically volunteering to be a clingy nuisance.
On the other hand…
Heh.
An Yu and I had more than romance between us.
He’d saved my life. I was repaying a debt.
What if his eyes went blind again because I wasn’t there to watch over him?
Absolutely no stupid thoughts about going all out to chase him. None whatsoever.
Having settled that, I descended upon the A University dorms that very night.
An Yu didn’t own much. His things were neatly arranged on one side of the room.
Once the bodyguards had put away everything I’d brought, the room felt crowded.
I crossed my legs and arranged myself in what I considered a devastatingly handsome pose. Well, one leg was temporarily out of commission. Then I waited nervously for An Yu.
By eleven, I was nodding off.
Click. The door opened.
After a little rustling, I opened my sleepy eyes.
A hazy beam of moonlight fell through the window. A tall, slender figure stood with his back to me, taking off his clothes.
My mind wandered. I swallowed.
Gulp.
Uh… wait.
An Yu froze, then switched on the light, wary.
It was blinding.
His skin was blindingly pale. The livid whip marks across it were worse.
Our eyes met. Neither of us spoke.
He hurriedly pulled his clothes back on and asked in a small voice, “Shen Shiying, what are you doing here?”
Oh. So he knew my name.
I forced a smile, my gaze darkening on his wounds.
“Going to school.”
“Oh.”
He went about tidying up like a little hamster.
After a while, he finally noticed what was wrong. “Shen Shiying, why are you sharing my room?”
Then he looked annoyed with himself, as though he regretted asking.
Adorable.
I said nothing. Just kept patting the bed.
“Come here.”
An Yu blinked slowly and came over as he was told.
I raised an eyebrow. So obedient.
In our last life, he’d barely paid me any attention. Cold as anything.
“Who hurt you?”
An Yu lowered his head awkwardly and tugged at the hem of his shirt.
That was what he did when he didn’t want to answer.
His chin was practically touching his chest.
I sighed. “Fine. You don’t have to tell me. Want me to put some medicine on it?”
An Yu shook his head and finally spared me a glance.
“Shen Shiying, if you have trouble going to the bathroom at night, I can hold you up.”
I had no words.
Hold me, would he? Sounded excellent.
An Yu had the softest hands.
I rubbed his earlobe, utterly untroubled by the fact that this was sexual harassment.
“Okay. I’ll call you.”
He murmured another “oh,” tripped a little as he stood up, then hurried back to his own bed.
The mound under his blanket rose and fell with his quiet breathing.
I lay in bed. For the first time since An Yu’s death, I felt safe.
I’d intended to stay awake. The moment I relaxed, I slept more heavily than a wild boar.
In the morning, I woke blearily, saw the empty bed beside mine, and snapped wide awake.
My heart pounded.
My limbs went stiff.
I couldn’t keep my footing. Down I went with a thud.
The bathroom door opened.
An Yu had just washed his face. Hearing the noise, he rushed out without drying it, water still dripping from his chin.
The sight of me on the floor gave him a fright.
He hurried over and helped me up, his eyes brimming with worry.
I could see my own sorry reflection in them.
His grip on my arm was almost painfully tight.
I gazed up at him, all wounded innocence.
“An Yu, my leg hurts.”
He gentled his touch and immediately tried to hoist me onto his back to take me to the hospital.
I awkwardly turned down his kind offer.
Blockhead.
I just wanted him to fuss over me.
“You’re sure you don’t feel bad?”
An Yu kept glancing back with every step.
“I’m fine.”
I insisted, and insisted again.
At last he went off to class, looking miserable.
So worried about everyone else, and not a thought for his own injuries.
I took out my phone and told the butler to bring some medicine.
After a moment’s thought, I also summoned Ji Hui to the dorm’s café.
